Saudi clerics endorse ban on female cashiers

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- Saudi Arabia's top government-sanctioned board of senior Islamic clerics has endorsed a fatwa that calls for a ban on female vendors because it violates the kingdom's strict segregation of the sexes.

The powerful committee said in its ruling Sunday that the mixing of sexes is forbidden and women should not seek jobs where they could encounter men.

The decision comes after a conservative preacher was reprimanded in August for violating a government-mandated restriction on fatwas by calling for a boycott of supermarkets employing female cashiers.

Saudi King Abdullah has been trying to clamp down on ultraconservative ideology as part of his bid to modernize the kingdom. But his efforts appear to be challenged by the influential religious scholars, who play a key role in the monarch's legitimacy.

The words "Jesus" or "Christian" don't appear in the Constitution. Jefferson, Adams and Franklin would be considered agnostics today. Calling America an "historically Christian nation" is dumb at best.

I wasn't making a comparison. It was a sarcastic remark about conservatives going hysterical about sharia taking over the country while at the same time not believing in the separation of church and state.

I worked/lived in Saudi (Riyadh) for the USMTM three years prior to Desert Shield/Storm. These photo are not representative of anything you would see in Saudi Arabia ever with thier strict religious rules. The Mutaween would have a field day beating on folks, if such a mall existed, especially any uncovered women. It was forbidden to show women period, covered or uncovered, in any form. If you wanted to see women, you just go to chop-chop square and you might see a head get chopped off too.

It was a joke. I'm fully aware that these idiots like to chop off the heads of women over bullshit. That's why we should spend more energy on Saudi Arabia, which bankrolled 9/11, than worrying a bunch of goat herders in Afghanistan.
