"Drag Me to Hell" very underated raimi film seemed to last only 1 week in theatres when it was released

"Wolfen" an old albertfinney movie "who?"

Mothman yeah just pg 13 but I still think scary kids

I remember seeing this B movie years ago where some folks found themselves stranded on a tropical island little did they know that nazi zombies existed in the waters of the isle anyone remember the name of said film?

Horror movies are a cash cow genre. Most will me successful generating at least $20 to $30 mil, so there's no incentive to spend a lot of time or money on them making them good. There are exceptions, of course. But most aren't very good.

I've got some good films I'll add - some familiar some not:

Exorcist
Poltergeist (1st half)
Shining
Anatomy 2
Cabin Fever
Gin Gwai (The Eye - original version)
Haute Tension
À l'intérieur (probably one of the goriest films I've ever seen)
Ginger Snaps
Pontypool
Reeker
The Descent
Zombieland (more comedy than anything but good)
[Rec] - Spanish version
The Thing
Evil Dead

I like my horror - but at WTL most are pretty dumb - though these (imo) are some gems.

Like I said, there are good horror movies. The problem is you have to wade through a bunch of shit to find them. Back in the day you could tell John Carpenter and Wes Craven tried to craft each movie into something unique. Now, directors just show people having meat hooks put in their backs and that's supposed to be entertainment.

When I was a kid my grandmother used to watch some channel that played all these old horror flicks from the 60s and 70s, like Vincent Price shit. I'm not sure how scary they are as an adult, but some of them really freaked me the hell out:

* Gargoyles (?)- somewhere out in the desert southwest, a rancher was terrorized by a clan of gargoyles living in a cave.

* Invaders From Mars- the chief alien was just a head in a glass container with weird fingerlike extensions, that thing gave me nightmares.

* Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark- weird little, evil creatures living in some woman's chimney. I was afraid to go in my basement because of them.

And some weird movie about a mummy that I've managed to repress.

Psycho is a disturbing movie, I can't imagine how controversial it must have been when it came out in 1960.

The Exorcist is great, especially the crucifix scene. The sequel was really stupid, but the third movie with the guy that played Patton was pretty good.

The Human Centipede, like Radiophile suggested. Not very violent but still horrifying. The ending is really fucked up.

The original Chainsaw Massacre is a very good movie, the two new ones felt like they were made for teenagers. The original one really gets under my skin.

It freaked me out when it first came out, now I watch it again and it feels cheesy. The scene where we first see Candyman in the parking deck is still scary.

I looked at the plot synopsis, I don't think that's it.

Also, I just found out they're remaking "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" with Katie Holmes. If you're a fan of horror movies, do yourself a favor and see the original one first. I'm sure the remake will be full of scary special effects, but the original relied purely on creepiness and suspense.

The original Hellraiser is great... Even though it was primitive, seeing Ol' Scratch at the end was a nice touch...

Movies just need to stop using CG as a crutch... I think it gives filmmakers an excuse not to be creative...

And if you want to scare your kiddo this Halloween:

"The Thing", early 80s version, scared the piss out of me when I was growing up. After watching it I kept looking at the people around me trying to guess if any of them were not really human.

"Invasion of the Body Snatchers", 50s version or 70s version, either one scared the shit out of me for the same reason. The 70s version, with DOnald Sutherland and Leonard Nimoy, is probably my favorite, but the 50s version is worth watching. It's in black and white and it's a very creepy, tense, Cold War-era movie that works psychologically the same way that the Twilight Zone works. This movie was remade two more times, "Body Snatchers" in 1993 which was okay, and the Nicole Kidman film "The Invasion" in 2007 which wasn't much good.

Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" is probably my favorite horror movie. Jack Nicholson is awesome, this movie defined him. And Kubrick's just a master at manipulating imagry to build a sense of dread. The funny thing about this film is that Stephen King, who wrote the book, hated it intensely because it doesn't follow the book the way he wanted. Fortunately for movie fans, Kubrick just blew off King and did it his way. King later redid the movie as a miniseries for a cable channel, Sci Fi maybe, and his remake sucks donkeys.

As for scary ghost stories, "The Changeling" with George C. Scott is probably the only straight up ghost story that ever scared me. Too bad it's not a well-known movie, but it's worth a look. I don't know how scary I would find it today.

I liked "Fourth Kind". Those types of movies are the scariest IMO, because they involve the unknown more so than a simple slaughter fest. Also, they're based upon very real notions or purported events, so that makes them even freakier.

lol, I found a clip of that "Gargoyles" movie I mentioned. It is cheesy in a very 70s kind of way, complete with a cute 70's chick. I'd like to watch this whole thing again sometime and figure out why it seemed so scary when I was a kid.

The Gate with a very young Stephen Dorff. I thought it was scary when I was little but it's pretty stupid.

Oh yeah, that is soooooo 70s. Channel 17 in Philly used to have a show called "Creature Double Feature" back in the day where they used to play movies like that on Sunday afternoons.

I can see where it would creep out a kid, though. The idea that there are creatures living underground (or in the back yard, or in the the closet, etc.)always seemed to make sense until I was like 10-12 years old.

the scariest movie I've ever seen was not a horror movie: Requiem For A Dream. That movie creeped me out, because I wasn't expecting it; it's scary because it takes real emotion and takes it to a horrifying level...maybe not the most realistic drug movie ever made, but it makes a point. Scarier than any horror film I've seen.

Suspiria by Italian director Dario Argento is good
Dead Ringers by David Cronenberg is not necessarily a horror film either, but very creepy
The Unknown is a silent film by Tod Browning, who made Freaks. It's about a sideshow performer (Lon Chaney) who gets his arms amputated because the woman he loves is afraid of being touched. Very creepy. Creep city.

Mr.M - Requiem for a Dream - is simply intense - I know what you mean, it's not horror in the horror sense but I know what you mean by the ride the film takes you on.

Children of the Corn? Only because it has a ginger in it. Gingers are just plain evil!

That Requiem for a Dream movie looks interesting. I see it was made by the same guy who made the movie "Pi" (Greek letter, that is), which was a late 1990s independant film in black and white that was also kind of creepy, although it wasn't horror. Clint Mansel also does the music for both movies. I will have to look it up.

darren aronofsky is pure genius. i saw requiem before pi, but appreciated them both equally. i wonder what he's been up to lately?

children of the corn would be laughable today, but i the mid 80's it was the stuff of nightmares for me. whoever cast the ginger for that role was really onto something.
