1928 Charlie Chaplin "The Circus"

Well it's definitely not a hand-held AM/FM radio because those weren't even invented yet. Gotta be a cell phone.

In 1928 she should have been at home in the kitchen so she was hiding her face so no one would know she was out and not at home cooking and cleaning like she should have been.

Given the size of it and the lack of a Blue Tooth, she obviously traveled back to 1999 first to get it before going to 1928.

Well clearly it's not a "cell phone" per se as the infrastructure would not be in place.

I'd say it is a very good fake. However, if it were "real", it seems to me that if you were a time traveler, you wouldn't likely go alone and you'd probably bring some communication device, most likely with smartphone-like capability. You know, for quantum probability calculations. But why would you expose yourself by talking on a device in public?

It's probably someone that's hiding their face from the cameras, that's it.

This is kind of like the ID form of deductive reasoning. We can't explain it, so it MUST be God/a time traveler with a cell phone.

Here's a more simple explanation. Below is a photo of a director from that era. Notice what is in his hand...



...It's possible Chaplin was barking out orders using a megaphone when this gal walked into the shot. She put her hand up over her ear to muffle the sound. Toward the end of the shot, Chaplain probably said something to her about being in the shot...that's when she turns and is talking.

They're not filming a scene, it's at the premiere. It's part of the extras on the DVD. I saw this yesterday. The best explanation I saw was these:

What I'd like to study further is a zoom-out to see how others seem to be reacting to the person's behavior. No one seems to be in the shots I'm seeing, but someone talking on a mobile phone would seem as odd then as someone today transporting up to the Enterprise walking down the street would look to us. The person would get looks, especially given how openly (and probably loudly) that individual seems to be talking.

It's probably a 1920's Hollywood nutter talking to his own shoe, longing for the days to come when everyone in Hollywood is as gay as him.

But the argument that there is no mobile network in place doesn't matter... those with time travel capability would be able to establish mobile communications via some other method. Captain Kirk didn't need a mobile network installed on every planet he went to, duh.
