I've always thought that the more you actually read the Old Testament, the less chance you have of believing all the silliness.

I think most christians just have parts of the bible preached to them (in the pastors own view of course) and feel there's no real need to sit down and read the book. This is why so many Pastors, Priests and Bishops don't even believe in it themselves.

Some priests have told me that going through seminary school was the worst thing for their faith and when they started questioning. Unfortunately, at that point in their lives, there was no turning back. If they really believed all that nonsense, they wouldn't even dream of fucking young boys, cursing and watching porn.

They know there's no Hell and they know the Pope knows. It's all an institution too big to betray, even if it is crumbling to pieces.

From my understanding, the Old Testament was meant for people living before Christ. The New Testament deals with Christ's birth through death and the stuff therein is for the people who have been around since then. So if you only base it on the Old Testament, yes, it would seem silly, but you would also be taking it out of context.

I know a few people who are really into Jesus, but they live their lives in a manner that is completely opposite of the "Christian way" or they pick and choose what they want to follow. That's slightly irritating, especially when they're all "yay Jesus" on facebook or when they attempt to inject Jesus into a conversation.

The very foundation of the New Testament is based on the Old Testament. You know, the whole bloodline thing, "he will come riding into Jerusalem on a donkey", Son of God thing?

The New Testament was a way to sugar coat the embarrassment of the Old Testament and finally break away from the Jews. The stories were plagiarized and exaggerated from older fables and myths. The doctrine laid out by the council of Nicea was a fraud and politically biased.

Perhaps I was a bit unclear. What I menat was the Old Testament was for people who were alive on the earth prior to the birth of Christ. Hence, all the sacrifices and such. Once Christ came, the New Testament way took over as He replaced the sacrifices. That is my understanding so some of the things such as sacrificing in the Old Testament was not meant for those of us who are living now. My point was simply, that some of the silliness, as you put it, was not meant for us today.

This is merely my understanding, I have no doctorates in theology

That's because there is no way to prove or disprove of something no one has ever seen, smelled, touched, heard or have been able to provide the slightest bit of evidence for. Like I mentioned, you have this same problem with Unicorns, Leprechauns and all the other previous gods of yesteryear.

The same thing happened to me because of the battery of questions I had about stuff like that. It was worse for me though. They actually kicked me out of CCD and as a result, I was the only one in my family that didn't get confirmed.

They called my parents and wanted to know what was wrong with me and what outside influences were "possessing me". When my dad told them there was nothing wrong with me, they told him to keep me away from the school and any kids that went there.

I thought my dad was gonna break out the belt and start swinging, but surprisingly nothing really happened (in terms of corporal punishment), but I was on restriction for weeks. The good thing was that I never had to go there again.
