Good episode, walkers pouring through the fence, people turning into walkers in the quarantine section, the Governor made a brief appearance....

what a bad episode.

I keep pulling for this show to be somebody, but it never quite gets good enough to be real drama. This episode was just plain hokey and ham handed. Poor writing, predictable, cliche. Very bad bridge episode that no one wanted. Can we have one episode without a carnival-zombie killing with blood and guts and dumb and loud? It just never 'gets there'. Show should've been on HBO. Maybe then it could've been somebody.

You can't take a show that already has a large ensemble cast with too many main characters, at the beginning of the new season introduce a whole bunch of new characters to that already huge cast, and then less than halfway through the season jump to a completely new storyline with all new characters again, and expect the audience to give a damn about what's going on. It would be fun to watch that idiot-fest that follows the show just for shits to see how they try to put a positive spin on this crap-fest.

Good episode. The Governor is back to his old ways, in charge, stockpiling trophy zombies (this time in the lake.)

I would like to know the whole story behind that cabin scene.

Yeah, the walker in the lake was cool. When the Guv was dropping in the corpse I was wondering if the walker would be smart enough to get out upon re-animation. No reason he wouldn't re-animate in water, but now he's chained. Wonder if that's the Guv's new trophy spot or if this is just a one-off.

They're able to introduce so many new characters because they have no problem with killing off main characters. If you track back to the beginning of the series there are only four main characters left: Rick, Carl, Glen, and Carol. And I wouldn't necessarily bet on Glen or Carol being safe from getting cut out. They're great characters, but like I said, the writers have no bones about knocking off lead characters. I would say in reality, Rick is probably the only one that is safe until the end of the series. It would likely peter out with him gone.

Man, is it just me? Doesn't it feel like they're just rehashing last season? We already saw the Governor attack the prison, now he's going to do it again? We've been here already. And I think we got the essence of his character very clearly the first time around...he's a guy who's human and vulnerable, had a daughter, he's not simply a monster, we get it, he's complex. I think the Governor as a character served his purpose last season...I'm very disappointed with the lack of direction this season. We had a superflu that in the end had no dramatic significance, as nobody important ended up dying...and I guess expired pet meds cure are the cure for a post apocalyptic superflu. Dumb.

In the comics, the Governor doesn't just get into a fight with Michonne; he rapes her, repeatedly. She mutilates his genitals and cuts his arm off. He ends up getting shot and killed by one of his own people at the prison after he orders someone to shoot Lori, who then falls on Judith and crushes her. The tv show really has no teeth after you've read the comics.

Good point about this being a re-hash of the Governor character. The scenes from next week's make it look like he'll attack again, though I suspect this time it will be under some other pretense and he'll have duped innocents in an entirely different manner.

As for fidelity with the comic, I've given up on that. This thing departed from the comic long ago. Likely because the writers and producers did not want to be constantly critiqued for their interpretation of the story if they tried to remain true to it.

Agree about the superflu thing, too. Seemed like kind of a waste of a few episodes other than to kill off a few Woodbury refugees. They could have taken it in a different direction for example by getting to vet school and finding out the walker virus started there or there's another group holed up or those who catch that flu and survive become immune or anything else. It was more just a further exploration of Bob's alcoholism, which hasn't been touched on since. Not sure that makes for a story arch, but they kind of left that hanging out there.

The flu episode was just to develop Herschel's cahracter as a tough guy who can handle himself in a medical crisis with zombies around. I'm cool with that.

As for this being a rehash of last season, jury's out on that until we see what they do. There is a third armed gang out there and we don't know who's feeding rats to the walkers yet. Plus there are scores to settle and someone has to get knocked off.

Show is good, but the comics are light years better. Michonne sticks a spoon waaay up the Gov's ass and then plucks his eye out with it. Comic is way more brutal.

Wonder if the third armed gang is the same as the ones who killed everyone in the retirement home from season one. There was about 10 minutes cut out before they left for the CDC where they return back to the retirement home and find everyone dead from gunshot wounds. They stay the night then head off, but it's clear the elderly folks there were murdered. I think I saw it on Youtube. Would be interesting if they tied that in, but might be difficult with that removed from the "official" storyline, unless they use it as some sort of flashback scene.

If the zombies hadn't been stuck in the quicksand, the Governor would have driven right into that pool.

I think the third armed party is going to be established as a background threat...nomadic raiders, that sort of thing.

The new director thinks the military still uses M60 Patton tanks and wears BDUs (see the cabin scene.)

That cabin scene, I hope we get more explanation on that.

Could also be that the third armed party is the group of rapists that Randall was with in season 2. Seems like there's not a lot of distance between the prison - the farm - Woodbury - and even King county.

I loved it when the annoying Army chick got it between the eyes. So glad that character won't be around.

On the other hand, the little girl who shot her is probably the psychopath who's been killing small animals and feeding rats to the walkers.

Michonne didn't finish off the Gov, though. It was a chick, I think it was the woman he slept with earlier.

The writers said they wanted real characters to show up as zombies from time to time to remind you that the zombies used to be actual people.

Just watched it last night (was out of the country for a couple weeks). Wow, didn't see Hershel's death coming. The Governor was always an outside possibility, but Hershel? Oh well, the writers aren't afraid of killing off main characters and at least they didn't take the easy path of having the Gov execute Michonne instead.

It will be interesting to see where they take this, particularly in terms as someone mentioned earlier about a third group (the ones that attacked the camp that the Gov's group didn't). Wonder if that's the same group that Randall from the end of season 2 was a part of.

And Judith missing...holy crap, reminds me back to the season 2 again when T Dog was looking for meds at the back-up and came across a bloodied child car seat.

Yeah, I was kind of thinking that, too. But they've strayed from the comic in a lot of ways (not that I care, I'm not a purist on this one), so it will interesting to see. Wonder if they do end up here if they'll do any filming on location. I read an interview with Nicotero saying the second half of the season would be completely different from the first half. There are certainly a number of unresolved issues and now with this last episode a whole host of new ones.

How can a show like this get any darker than it already is? Is Rick going to "go evil" again? Are they going to corrupt another good guy character into losing his or her soul? I think it's enough that they lost the prison sanctuary and are now on the run and desperate again. Should make for a good survival story.

Personally I don't like the "everybody's infected" idea. It makes it hard to believe anyone would go to sleep at night knowing that if someone croaks in their sleep they will eat your face. They should've stuck with the "only infected if bit" version of zombie lore IMO.

That's what kind of made the prison optimal: you could lock yourself in at night in case that happened. Of course, they didn't and we say what happened after Patrick turned.

The graphic novel is basically them moving to a "safe" area, having to work with others, the development of a nemesis and then some event that makes them move and start all over.

It's not. If you watched the preview for next week and have read the comics, it's Abraham Ford, who is travelling to DC. His fat little buddy is Eugene Porter, who claims he's a scientist who knows what happened.

From Wikipedia:

Abraham meets survivor Glen Rhee and Tara Chalmers on the road at the end of "Inmates", the tenth episode of season four.

I hope the group following the tracks aren't walking the whole way to DC.

One of the best episodes.

It felt a little disjointed, like it never started. At 9:45 it still felt like we were only a few minutes in. But maybe that's to be expected considering they're essentially introducing two new story lines: fake scientist trek to DC for Glenn and Tara and Sanctuary for Rick, Carl, and Michonne. Glad to see they've lightened up her character a bit, too.

That idiot soldier guy should know better. He must be desperate for a chance to fix the world. That guy shot up the fuel tank on the truck and nearly shot up his own people, too.

The crew of guys Rick had to escape from will be trouble.

Yeah, what's up with that crew? I just watched the episode again. I count that when they arrived there were at least five of them and someone else the tortured and killed
- two downstairs talking loud, including tennis ball man
- first guy in the bed who was subsequently murdered
- second guy in the bed who murdered the first
- guy on the toilet the Rick murdered

At the end there were no more than three left.

Who were they and will they have relevance or are they random? It feels like nothing on this show is ever random?

Maybe they were the guys that murdered that small camp in the woods from earlier in the season when the Governor as Brian was out on recon with his new camp after murdering Martinez. You'll recall they were going to attack but didn't, only to find everyone dead a short time later.

The one guy who was standing on the porch when Rick was sneaking away is a well-known actor that I've seen in lots of stuff, so I'm guessing we'll see those guys again. If not they would've used a nobody actor.

That whole yelling match between Beth and Daryl reminded me of the scene the Breakfast Club where Molly Ringwold and the stoner kid are yelling at each other.

Well, this was an all talk, no action episode. The country club was interesting though. What's up with that "rich bitch" corpse?

Apparently there was some kind of class revolt by the staff against the rich clientelle when the zompocalypse hit, and the rich people wound up being hung to death and becoming zombie fruit.

It wasn't all talk, there was a fair amount of zombie-killing, but it was mostly a character development episode. Now we know more about Daryl's background, and Beth is becoming a major character.

No doubt so they can violently kill her off like they did her father.

Is that from the comics?

They mentioned it on the Talking Dead, and it makes sense when you think about the scene.

Okay, thanks. I usually don't make it all the way through Talking Dead. I think they try too hard to be funny while also getting into the nuance of the episode without accidentally giving away anything in an upcoming episode, so the comments are often somewhat guarded.

Makes you kind of wonder now how many other scores were settled when the shit went down.

No. The country club isn't in the comics. Neither is Daryl. The comic is better than the show. Robert Kirkman has said he's taking the opportunity to help craft something a little different and to not do some of the things he's done in the comic (Rick loses his right hand in the comics, as an example).

I watched the episode again last night. Kind of felt the same thing. Probably wouldn't not go so far as to say he's not a good actor, but some of his performance last night seemed forced, as did parts of the story line. Maybe that's why they've not had much of the entire series focus on his character other than a few grunts and pissed off comments.

I just hope the TV show doesn't jump the shark later on. It seems they are trying to outdo the comics.

So he got the red uniform before beaming down? Kind of makes sense. They put a lot into Lori before offing her and same with Andrea and Hershel. And of course they spent several episodes of the first half of season 4 on the Governor and shitcanned him.

I think it's a toss up between Beth and Daryl. Beth calling herself a dead girl seems to obvious, but maybe that's where we are as a society: we need obvious and can't do subtlety. Or maybe it's Daryl. Only trouble is that if you read other threads on TWD you'll basically see that if they kill him a lot of viewers will bolt, and AMC can't let that happen.

Worst show ever! J/k, its ok.

There are parts of the comic that are just tedious as hell. But then again it was never was supposed to be about zombies. It's about what happens to people when every day is about just living to see tomorrow in a world with no structure and constant danger. Zombies are just the catalyst.

I have to admit he's my favorite character. If they kill him off I might quit watching. Michonne is another favorite.

I'd much rather they kill off Rick. His broody English-actor-trying-to-act-like-a-Southerner thing annoys the shit out of me sometimes.

At least they killed off the two most annoying bitches, Lori and Andrea.

Um, yeah, anyhow, back to our conversation about The Walking Dead.

Killing off Rick would pretty much end the show. He's the main character, even if they've drifted a bit into spending time on character development for the others. And that's a good thing, too. We're starting to see more of who they really are versus just the one dimension many of them were in the first couple seasons. I suspect (hope?) they're done killing off main characters this season. Hershel's death was pretty brutal, not just in how it was done but that he was a character everyone could like. But if they really wanted to fuck with everyone and not destroy their following by killing Daryl or Michonne or Rick they should have Judith get bit or scratched by a walker and turn into one herself. Then Rick will have to decide if he'll do like the Gov did with his walker daughter or put her down instead. As far as Rick knows right now, Judith is dead.

It's good that things are moving, literally. Being stationary at the farm or prison was getting boring, and people focused too much on petty problems. Now, we have several groups, each with a unique story.

The train tracks the one group is following leads to Terminal. That's the old name for Atlanta....are they going back to Atlanta like in season 1?

Of course things will go badly. That's what the show is all about.

Looks like Daryl has found the rednecks who raided Rick & Michonne's house earlier. I knew those guys would be back.

And Beth got picked up by Pedobear.

Options: ReplyQuote
Re: Walking Dead Series Looks Awesome

Yeah, you called it on those redneck types making a come back into the series. I think I posited this before but I wonder if they're the same ones that killed the people in that camp in the woods when Pete took charge after the Gov killed Martinez and also the same crew Randall (2nd half of season 2) said he was with. He described some pretty bad things these guys did and the head honcho said they like doing bad things to innocent people, or something to that effect.

Funny how Daryl hooks up again with his old types just as he'd purged himself of that old persona in the previous episode, "Still".

Not sure about Beth, was there a cross painted in red on the back of that car? Why did Daryl just open that front door without looking outside first? There were slats in the door and even on TV I could see (and hear) there were walkers on the other side of it. Something about that house just seemed like a set-up.

Options: ReplyQuote
Re: Walking Dead Series Looks Awesome

The house definitely felt like a trap to me, but who knows. Daryl got sloppy because he was getting drunk and comfy. My guess is that the writers are setting him up to make a choice between going back to being just a redneck or risking his life to rescue Beth. We'll see how that plays out.

Of course, now that they've turned Beth into a developed character and made her kind of likeable, they're equally likely to kill her off.
