Walking Dead Series Looks Awesome

At 2:50, I don't know why anyone would have hesitation at shooting a little zombie girl holding a teddy bear.

I've pretty much had it with zombies. Their starting to become as silly as vampires and werewolves.

Why, because of all of the Werewolf novels and shows?

Oh. Right. There aren't any. At the present time, werewolves are only cursory members of two television series: True Blood, Vampire Diaries.

Yeah, man, seriously. God damn werewolves and their 2 hours total screen time in multi-season hour long television series! Damn you! DAMN YOU TO HELL!!!!

This would make an AWESOME fucking series, but of course, the producers took a giant shit on it by casting some redneck cop looking for his family.

A truly kick-ass Zombie Apocalypse series wouldn't have such a clear-cut and cookie-cutter protagonist.

I've never read the comic series, supposedly the TV show follows it pretty closely. The thing I noticed that I didn't like is the fact the main character wakes up in a hospital to find out the world is destroyed, which is exactly how 28 Days Later started.

Twilight is doing a pretty good job of fagging up werewolves too.

Underworld did a pretty good job of representing werewoles though.

I'm not 100%, but I think the author of the comic stated he'd never seen it and I'm not sure if the time line of the comics and 28 days later overlap or if one was before the other. I'm too lazy to look it up. They are very similar, but I prefer the walking dead. The comics were pretty good.

i saw an episode of it, it was the one where he just got out of the hospital. i havent been following it, i always forget when it comes on. but the episode i watched didnt turn me off of it. it seemed slow but that was probably because it was one of the first few episodes and they were just doing the character development thing that shows like to do. if i could find out when it comes on i would probably continue to watch it. im just killing time until BB comes back on.

I'm watching it on itunes. They really set a high standard with the first five minutes where the guy shoots the zombie girl point blank with a huge ass Colt revolver. I sincerely hope one day I have the opportunity to shoot an undead child with a .357 Magnum.

Most of the stuff AMC makes is pretty good; this has been good so far. It's a lot more violent than I expected it to be, which is right for a zombie show, and because it's longer than a movie they've had time to write characters you give a shit about. I'm not sure it can go on for more than 1 or 3 seasons, though.

Beats the suck ass reality shows, I hope I live long enough for them to pass and get back to real series. The storyline thus far is pretty good as long as the action keeps up and doesnt become a soap opera

The show is fucking awesome. Follows the comic book very closely. Parts that aren't covered in the comic book are done pretty well.

They did a great job on the half eaten woman that was crawling through the park. Very realistic looking; I like the snail trail she was leaving.

This series is great, definitely a lot smarter than you'd think a show about zombies would be. I'm kinda bummed there are only 3 more episodes this season.

The finale for this show was very very weak. The first few episodes were really good, though. According to the news they fired all the writers so if the show comes back hopefully it will be better.

Well, if you had read what the screen writer said you would have found out that he had written the plot completely unaware that 28 days later started like that. It was only when they released the premier they found that out. WD is sick. 2nd series coming soon.

Show's not bad, had some good scenes, some not-so-good ones.

I'd like to see a low-budget zombie series, shot really cheap, but with talented writers and actors.

Model would be the obscure but great TV series "The Street." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0136670/ http://articles.latimes.com/1988-04-09/entertainment/ca-887_1_miami-vice http://www.nytimes.com/1988/02/14/nyregion/new-tv-series-stars-newark-police-officers.html

Or the original Night of the Living Dead. Or Cops.

Basically, 13 one-hour episodes per year - the schedule TWD will be on - sucks. But that's the only way a big-budget series production can work.

I'd rather see a cheaper series with more - many more - episodes. Cheap but good in terms of the writing/acting/directing talent.

The biggest problems with this show are

1) You are supposed to care about characters you hardly know. That one older black lady let herself be killed in the finale and it was like "who cares", we don't even remember her name or heard her speak any lines anyway.

2) Not enough zombies. Not enough action. Too much talking and angst and whining.

+1 Sometimes it was more of a soap opera than anything else. The character development seemed to fill up the entire season.

I've seen both episodes of the new season and I saw about 75% of the first season.

Its no Breaking Bad, but I like it. I wish there was less talking and more flesh eating, but I guess if it was all action it would get boring quick.

The first episode had a really great, intense scene with the horde moving past them on the highway when they didn't see them coming, but damn near everything after that was a snooze-fest. lost little girl in the woods is the story line for the first two episodes? christ... the little boy getting shot and needing supplies is pretty weak too. if you're a parent then it hits emotionally a little but there was very little suspense. best part of the entire 2nd episode - "mmeharrrrrgh...." "Shut up." ::thwap:: (arrow to the head)

This.

It's too damn s l o w.

If they cut out the angst and whining, they could have combined episodes 1 & 2 into one very good episode.

They tell the story at a Mad Men [i.e., "serious drama"] pace, but it ain't Mad Men. The writers should take a lesson from Prison Break, which combined fast-paced storytelling with well-developed characters.

That said, the ratings blow away every other AMC show. And if the slow-walk pace gets ratings, that's probably the way it's gonna stay.

It is too slow, I wonder if the rathings bump was just because they heavily marketed the second season so much over the past year. Will the ratings go down now that everyone is complaining about it being so slow?

I dunno, but I'll keep watching it for now.

I was pleasantly surprised at the "racist redneck hunter."

In the premiere, he did the following:

1.) Saved the black guy.
2.) Tracked the little girl through the woods when the Sheriff couldn't.
3.) Armed himself with a silent bow and arrow and used it effectively.
4.) Handed the woman a gun when she asked for protection.

A couple more guys like him and I might start enjoying this show.

*Spurious.

You really need to read the comic book first and then watch the show.

Little boy gets shot, they take him to Herschel's farm. In the book, Herschel keeps the zombies they've come across in his barn, where he hopes one day to find a cure. The asian guy and his daugther hook up at some point at the farm. I didn't see anything at all relating to that relationship in Ep 2. Maybe later.

That is interesting. I didn't know there was a comic that the show is based on.

And in ep. 2 the old guy was rambling about "how there is always a cure."

Definitely. The pseudo-tension created by the mad CDC doctor was kinda stupid; because it's realistic to assume all CDC buildings have an extensive artificial intelligence system and an available self-destruct sequence.

The CDC storyline was added for the show. It is not in the book.
Also in the book, Shane gets killed early on, seems he was upset when Rick showed up. After banging Lori for awhile, he got jealous when her man came back.

Yeah, she is fucking dumb. I notice that all these people are retarded and don't listen when they're told what to do and what not to do.

But of course, Daryl lives. The guy is a fucking beast. Shoots a squirrel for lunch from horseback, thrown from a horse, falls off a cliff, gets stuck through the torso with an arrow, falls off another cliff, suffers a head wound, wakes up and fucking murders two zombies in his weakened state, eats the squirrel meat raw, climbs back up the cliff, gets shot in the head, and fucking lives to give the girl's mom the doll back. Dude's a badass.

I was supremely disappointed that Merle was a hallucination, but that disappointment quickly faded when Merle turned out to be a zombie gnawing on Daryl's foot. The old man with the farm house is starting to piss me off. Sad to say, but if I were one of his "guests" I'd be planning to make his home mine..

Anyone else find Glenn's character annoying and pointless? Didn't notice until he starting screwing the simple minded farm girl.

Glenn is getting a little too reckless and isn't thinking about anything but his tiny asian dick. At least we can say for sure that they've got walkers held up in the barn now.

Yea he's been right about a lot of things, like not letting her use a gun.

Looks like the walkers in the barn are going to escape at some point next week. I wonder how the doc got them all in there?

Likely farm hands and relatives they put in there before the fever killed 'em and they turned. That's my theory anyway.

I'm just surprised with all the livestock grazing in the fields that walkers don't come in hordes and tear them apart like the pilot episode's horse.

Yeah, he is fucking annoying and stupid. He can't keep his mouth shut, can't figure out how not to telegraph to everyone around him that he's doinking the farmer's daughter, doesn't listen when he's told the barn is off-limits.

What the hell has happened to Short Round, he was cool when he was with Indiana Jones?

Also, with all the noise they make, including the rifle shot at Daryl, why haven't they attracted walkers? The show hasn't been consistent in details like that, but what the hell, as long as it's entertaining.

I've been thinking about both of these things as well and I have a feeling that they're in for a nasty fight with a horde soon enough because they're being so disruptive. I figured the generator alone would be enough to attract the walkers, but evidently not.

So now that we've seen what is in the barn do you think the well walker that they ripped in half last week was someone the farm folks knew and that's why the farmer's daughter reacted the way she did when T-Dawg bashed his head in?

All the female characters on that show are freaking terrible. Feminists complain about Mad Men's accurate portrayal of sexism in the 1960s workplace, but I would think they'd have more of a problem with Walking Dead. Each woman on that show is constantly screwing up things for everyone, and when she isn't, it's because she's too busy crying.

So the walkers in the barn are their family members as I had previously figured. Since the hick moron farmer's daughter got attacked do you think she'll be more likely to put the walkers out of their misery? Or is this going to get very ugly and end with some living on living violence a la Otis?

I dont know, but if they dont speed up the story line a little, it going to be called the Cancelled Dead. This season is really a disappointment after last season. The continuity is really lacking.

****SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE EPISODE YET********

new writers. Kevin Smith hit one point dead on the head last night in the gayest after-show ever, Talking Dead. When Rick's wife told him that she was fucking Shane he just took a couple of breaths, paced a bit and said ok. Kevin Smith said that whole scene was bullshit and checked the credits to find that sure enough, the writer for the episode was a woman (and it really was, too). Smith suggested that only a woman would write such crap and that if a guy wrote the episode Rick would have a more realistic reaction...like, i don't know...anger. I hope that the producers are paying attention to the feedback online because it is an easy 90% negative regarding the pace of the season and lack of any sort of real development short of the characters becoming more ballsy towards each other and challenging their places within the group. Also Andrea set out with Shane to learn how to shoot and came back an expert in driving stick.

Sidenotes.

Michael Rooker (Merle) demonstrates his shooting prowess:

So I guess Merle is going to become The Governor, or some variant thereof (since we don't want to have a non-white villian, do we?).

So now we know the doctor can't tell the difference between a sick person and a reanimated corpse, and Andrea gets all hot and horny shooting zombies. I like how it is emphasized that Shane is without a doubt driving a Hyundai SUV, and the collection of axes and machetes are made by Gerber.

How is it the corpses on the ground have swarms of flies on them, but the walkers are insect free? They should have maggots consuming them as they walk around aimlessly.

You're right about that; I don't know if a show that combines a soap opera with a zombie apocalypse can last much longer. If anything, the zombies should decompose until they can't walk or bite anymore, right?

The flies I agree with you on. The maggots wouldn't be on the walkers because of the whole "rolling stone gathers no moss" effect. Walkers are slow, but maggots are slower and wouldn't have a chance to latch onto them in order to nom. What would be the role of mosquitoes during a zombie apocalypse? Would they spread the virus like malaria? Would the virus kill the mosquitoes before they could bite someone else? Zombie mosquitoes? FUUUUUUUUUUCK.

Darabont has been executive producer on all the episodes so far this season. It'll be interesting to see what kind of impact his firing has on the quality of the show.

Another question, so Shane and his girl drive miles to find a subdivision where the missing girl might be. Why park and then pass lots of houses to search one that if something goes wrong, which it does, you have to fight your way back to the car? The first season everybody is on high alert all the time jumping at every sound and this season everybody is just walking around gabbing without a care in the world. Series looks doomed to me.

Yeah, it was a real half ass attempt at finding the girl. What was up with the hole in the wall leading to all those burned bodies? Kinda random.

Looks like the people in there tried to cut off as much of the house as they could because there were too many points of entry back there...walkers made their way through anyway. they'd better find this little girl one way or another this week or the 2nd half of season 2 might not make it to the DVR

Get ready to be entertained....

Are they going to find the girl? or Is she going to be a Walker'?
Does Shane get confronted for sexual affairs with Ricks' wife?
Does the oriental kid, Glenn, take more charge? Create a new group within the group?
Do they kill the old man to take over the farm and free the family from his cult' like hold over them?
What are they going to do with the walkers' (family members) in the barn?

So much more....

With the endless search for Sophia, we needed a good pay-off, and I think we got one.

Some good scenes - I like the way they've developed the Shane character - but it still felt kind of draggy throughout... a bit ponderous.

This magic kingdom of Hershel's farm, I didn't buy it in the comic, and I don't buy it in the show. They never explain why at least an occasional zombie doesn't wander by to wreak havoc. It's just not believable, but I'm willing to give it a pass because I expect they'll be moving on from the farm before the end of the second half of this season.

By the bye - I LOVE the comic book/graphic novel, and would highly recommend the "Compendium One" edition to anyone who is into the show. It's kind of expensive - about $35 - but it's over 1000 pages, and it really kicks ass. There's the occasional stumble or oddball moment that doesn't come off, but most of it is A+ material - Robert Kirkman is a GREAT storyteller - that will keep you up well past your bedtime. Not so much because it's super scary, but because the story is just a real page-turner (at least it was for me).

There are no zombie animals in the Walking Dead comic. It just doesn't happen.

They may change that up in the TV series, like they've changed up a lot of things, but so far they appear to be taking the same approach as the comic.

I read one book that had zombie birds (Monster Island), but zombie animals are not a typical feature of the genre. I don't think any Romero films have them.

Did Return of the Living Dead have undead animals? I can't remember.

It would have a huge variable to their dilemma. Seriously, undead cats, raccoons, dogs, foxes, it would be hilarious.

As far as birds, they are cold blooded, so it would be realistic for an epidemic like this zombie virus not to hurt them.

in the comic is when Moby manages to "hypnotize" a zombie horde with his rave music just long enough for Rick & the Gang to escape.

Moby keeps playing and playing, but then his hands start to get tired, and the zombies surround him and do their thing.

But he dies a heroic death.

And then when he's a zombie he starts playing again, and the music sounds exactly the same...
