The platypus looks like it was made from miscellaneous parts.

It was a different time, man. Ann Margrock and Stony Curtis were the big movie stars of the day. Fashion was completely different.

GEEZ, WOULDN'T IT BE NICE TO KNOW WHAT CREATED THAT
SPECIES THAT YOU SEEM TO THINK WENT EXTINCT SO EXPLAINABLY?

Also, THE ANSWER TO THE OP'S QUESTION IS :

***EVOLUTION BY INTELLIGENT DESIGN.***

LOL, I was being facetious, but according to the article, it's defense mechanisms were better suited to scaring off other carnivores and to do battle with other males of it's species. The larger, meaner dinosaurs would have no trouble with one.

The Platypus is still around for the same reason all the other species are, because it has adapted to it's environment. Why is this so difficult to understand?

Actually it has not adapted to anything, THAT'S THE POINT.

Yet another reason to go visit Oz in the near future. Hot babes with cool accents, and now the killer duck creature from the billabong.

where's the picture from and does it have an article to go with it?

survival of the fittest does not imply the most well adapted to living, only that they adapted the most crucial element(s) or circumstances that are needed to keep them alive. for example if the black plague killed a zillion people in towns. however, the people that had been exiled survived. this does not imply that what caused them to be exiled was beneficial or not, only that it resulted in them staying alive.

also, genetic "decoration" has been used in many species to attract a mate whether it be directly or indirectly through behavior (e.g. battling the competition). to my knowledge, rams dont need their gigantic horns for anything other than fighting each other for a mate. peacocks also have their colorful feathers to attract a mate.

adaptation does not always mean better, it just means it's alive to breed on. just look at the people living off welfare and/or those in trailer parks. their adaptation sucks but it's keeping them alive.

WHO DECORATES? A DECORATOR or "DESIGNER".

OKAY, THEY DON'T NEED THEM FOR BATTLE. SO THEY
SHOULD NOT BE THERE SINCE HUGE HORNS ARE ADMITTEDLY NOT
BENEFICIAL FOR SURVIVAL AND ARE NOT AN ADAPTION TO
THE ENVIRONMENT THAT MADE THEM MORE FIT TO SURVIVE.

MALE FEMALE PROCREATION WAS GODS WAY OF PROPOGATING THE
LIFE HE CREATED IN GENERAL ON THIS PLANET. MOST LIVING
ORGANISMS FOLLOW THIS MALE FEMALE METHOD OF PROCREATION.

WHO DID THAT?

THIS IS A COOL FUN FACT.

Over a very long period of time.

Correct, this is an example of an outside influence affecting a species and its environment. However, what if a few of those in the affected black plague environment had a gene mutation that gave them immunity? If this mutation strand were to pass through multiple generations, than the people who can survive in the black plague areas would have adapted, while the people that moved away didn't, but still prosper as well.

Adaptation to ones environment often means finding a new one that better suits the species, not just waiting around for mutation.

A better example would probably be the dinosaurs. As far as we know, an outside influence (meteor/asteroid) wiped out many of the species. The ones best suited to survive in the post apocalyptic environment went on to the next phase. Humans are a perfect example of this, as are birds. Birds are basically evolved dinosaurs.

BIRDS ARE DINOSAURS, DUMBASS.

Infact, birds prove evolution wrong because
they have not evolved AT ALL.

The flight mechanics of a bird are exactly
the same, as when they were created.

NO ADVANCES OVER MILLIONS OF YEARS = NO EVOLUTION

Fun fact. When Europeans arrived in New Zealand they found no four legged mammals. Research has shown the natives over centuries had clubbed every one of them to death.
