Whatever magic he is credited for in Atlanta, he didn't bring it here.

I thought the article was pretty enlightening. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but I didn't know that Kasten and Lerner had such a standoffish relationship. But Bos is right...why didnt the Nats take advantage of the new stadium with a real MLB payroll? Kasten couldn't really do much, on the $$$ leash they put him on.

Because every owner thinks they can do what was done with the Marlins and the Rays and make it to a World Series with a shitty payroll. The problem with that, and what we are seeing now with Tampa Bay, is that the Yankees and the Bo Sox and about two or three other teams swoop in when free agency rolls around and decimate your team.

I was listening to Mike and Mike this morning and supposedly the owner of the Rays basically said he's blowing up the team next year to get the payroll down to 50 million. They're at like 79 mil right now and averaging 26,000 seats sold at every game.

I remember when the Marlins won the World Series and like a few weeks later Wayne Huizenga started dismantling the team.

I heard the Mike and Mike thing, too, and they were blaming the shitty stadium in a shitty location. But you see the same thing happening with teams in great stadiums that have also been contenders. I don't think a new stadium would improve the Rays long-term prospects.
