New York is so horrible- why would anyone want to live there?
Posted by: jewyork ()

New York City is just awful (New York state is okay) But New York the city. eeww. Ugly buildings, mean-rude people, too crowded, too dangerous, smelly, dirty looking, filthy looking, over priced. Costs about 8500$ a month to get a hole in the wall apartment there. Its a sitting duck for natural disasters, and living there so closely with people means if a plague comes, you got nowhere to run. Subways are a mess. Can't look at anyone in the eye or else you'll get stabbed.

Why would anyone want to live in a sardine can like that?

I concur. I've had a few business trips up there and I hate it. Too crowded, too noisy, too dirty. I'm not a city person so I'm biased but I can see the appeal if you're into city living. There's always something going on.

NYC is fine if you know where and how to live there. Central Park is beautiful and the food is fantastic. Man if you think it sucks now you should have seen it in the 60's when they let pets poop all over the sidewalk and crime was much, much higher (memories).

If you like making money, eating well, seeing the best music and theater its pretty fantastic. If you like people there are so many to choose from its also a great place to find friends with common interests.

That said, as I get older, I find the crowds are sometimes just too much and the pace is a bit overwhelming. My grandma worked and lived there alone till she was 84 and loved it.

Suburbs of VA are okay but remember you have to get in your car, sit in traffic just to get the crappy groceries offered around here. Same if you want lunch dinner or breakfast out. With the exception of Arlington the food in VA is complete S#%t.

I guess it all depends on what you want...

New York isn't nearly as bad as it used to be. But it's not the kind of place I would want to live. Penn Station is like a fucking sewer and for all of the convenience of the train, I hate having to sit (or, more accurately, stand) in that shit hole, waiting for my train.

The food is not as great as new yorkers claim it to be. I guess they have good pizza but who can screw that one up unless you are a pizza chain. New Yorkers have something stuck up their ass that makes them think and belive it is such a great place when in fact it is not. They do have a lot of shopping but it is about twice the price as it is here. Also I also hate people who live outside the city by a hour or more that claim they are from new york city. Chicago is better besides the brutal weather.

Why are there so many Italians named Tony? Because when they are born they are stamped on the head: "To NY"

I grew up in Jersey just outside of NYC. The food in the area isnt always great but you can always get great food. And yes Im speaking of the Italian food. It is fantastic in that area. I love Philly Italian too.

The Italian here in DC/Baltimore (and Boston for that matter) just Sucks. One notable exception is the Italian Deli in Arlington. They have real Italian cold cuts, bread, sauces, cheese, peppers etc...

You pay through teh nose but its cheaper that driving to Philly or NYC.

The italian deli in arlington was a good place to grab a sub 10 years ago now they use the same cold cuts everyone else uses so if you are comparing that place to a place in NYC you dont know what good food is or high quaility meat. If you want a good sandwich go to balducci's.

Are you talking about the Italian Store or a place actually called the Italian Deli? I have a lot of friends that rave about the Italian Store, but the food doesn't compare to a small town PA Italian deli and the service was pretty bad.

You mean The Italian Store?

Well I just got food from there on Sunday before the games, and they haven't changed a thing. They don't use the "same cold cuts everyone else uses". Their food is consistently as good as it's been for more than a decade.

The Italian store has changed over the last few years and they do not use high quality cold cuts.

I've been going in there regularly since the 90s, I've never noticed a change in quality, and the lines are usually 20-30 people deep, so I guess all those people haven't noticed either.

I can understand if you think it's nothing to brag about, but it's clearly 10 steps above other italian sub shops in this area.

Tell me about it. Some of the architecture is just hideous.

Take Grand Central Station, for example. What were they thinking with that ceiling? And, what about that stupid looking Flatiron Building - a flatiron is an isosceles triangle, not a right triangle. What morons! And, I’ve never understood why they would throw up a building like the Met Life Tower. It looks like the campanile of St. Mark’s in Venice. And, that's ugly, too.

Oh, they are! Even worse, they aren't fun people. They are mean, rude, un-fun people. I can’t stand being around them.

Especially when tourists clog up the sidewalks, walking like snails and stopping suddenly to stare at the ugly buildings.

Some people like it that way. Too bad Giuliani turned it into Disneyland. Where did all the heroin addicts and peep shows in Times Square go? (probably New Jersey)

> smelly, dirty looking, filthy looking,

Yuck. I hate walking past the dirty restaurants with all those odors wafting through the air...especially all the garlic they use up there. I usually wear a clothespin on my nose whenever I’m forced to visit.

All those things and more. (the looking in the eye thing... don't do it)

I have been going their before they were at their current location in arlington. I have noticed a big change in the quality of meats they use and the generic italian sausages such as sopprasatta that you can buy at giant. It is true that they are better than most of the sub shops in the area but they are not the best and would be just another sub shop if it was NY, PHILLY or Chicago

Never had the sopressata or sausages so i wouldn't know. I think their subs are the best in the area, if you know of a better place let us know. They're even better than some of the places I've been to in Philly. Last year I got an italian hoagie from Geno's in Philly, the thing actually kinda sucked. Granted, Geno's is better known for their cheesesteaks, but it's pathetic that a place in Arlington makes a much better italian sub.

BTW, where was the Italian Store's original location?

The Italian store originally opened its doors in the late 70's or early 80's at 7 corners shopping center.

Ugly? I don't think so. Rude people? Actually, I've made friends up there within minutes of first meeting someone, which isn't typical around here. Don't mistake toughness for rudeness, and don't think that someone is inconsiderate simply because they don't give you a fake smile.

Real New Yorkers are cool. Most of the assholishness in that city comes from the transplants who moved there from someplace else and adopted a real attitude.

Folks who've grown up in the five boroughs of New York are usually really cool people. Rough around the edges maybe, but honest and engaging.

The city is just horrible. i went for one day less than a week ago, and aside from taking over a hour just to get into queens, not even manhattan(i wouldnt drive there anyway)i had to pay 150.00 f0r a shitty hotel that didnt even include parking or wifi(what is this? 1999?).

after making it into manhattan, i found a cheap slice of pizza, only 4.00 for a cheese slice wtf.. only to have to eat it amongst smelly garbage, and bums. after being overcharged unmercilessly to get into a club with broken air conditioning, the train running back to queens stopped running, and it took like 2+ hours to get from manhattan to queens, at 1am.

People sleeping everywhere, idiot drivers all thinking "me first" switching lanes without signaling, even if they gain only one position, like their going to get somewhere faster.. i ended up giving up on the mta, and hailed a cab. seemed like all the cabs meters were broken, so i had to employ the barter system. after being bullied and confronted by a bunch of rude cab drivers, and gypsy cabs, i figured it was worth it just to get back home by 2am.. my cab almost hit another car, and couldnt even keep the lane. meter was broke, but his cell phone headset wasnt. it was really hot and smelly in the cab, and when i rolled down the windows all the way, he finally cranked th weak a.c.

the worst of all of this is the driving in this city. i enjoy driving, and like the 70mph thru pennsylvania, but drop the anchor and stock up on gas before hitting NYC. no offense, but NY and NJ drivers are the worst in the region, and i live in Chicago.

i was running from chicago for a vacation, but by the end, i was running back, realising its really not that bad where i am at. F**K NYC. its a ZOO!!

I have to wonder if we are talking about the same New York City. I've been visiting about once every six months... usually for two nights. I haven't had any issues with rude cab drivers (and love that every cab has had the option to pay by credit card), we've gotten great hotel rooms for about $150/night using hotwire, and we've had a lot of luck with restaurants - both hole in the wall and better known options. We usually take a bus out of union station as it is cheap and low stress. Then we spend a lot of time walking around the city, usually meeting up with friends at some point. The subway is certainly not as clean or cool as in DC, but it is quite efficient.

I'm now watching Vanilla Sky. The characters in this movie are a subset of New Yorkers (the Manhattan subset). The Manhattan subset is characterized by extreme douchiness. They base their self-image off the parties they attend and the clubs they frequent. They represent the lowest form of douchebaggery, but it is accentuated by that dumb ass New York accent and their overall brashness and loud voices.

Then, as mentioned above, you have the Brooklyn subset. This is characterized by idiot hipsters and thug Russian immigrants. Hipsters live for today. You can spot them from a mile away from the head-to-toe tattoos and fucked up earlobes from those awful earrings they stuff in their ears. What the hell are you going to do when you're 45? Still going to be bartending then? Regarding the Russians, Brooklyn has become the entry point for the new American mafia, Russian immigrants. Who the hell let these criminals into my country anyway?

The boroughs of the Bronx and Staten Island are ghettos.

If I was to live in NYC, which I wouldn't for all the tea in China, I might live in Queens. More 'normal' people, but still the loud mouthiness and dumb accent.

The weather is shit. Traffic is horrendous. Don't even have to mention the cost. Subways are jammed. The noise. The pollution. The immigrants from 8,000 different countries who's language is incomprehensible. The toughguys everywhere who are looking for a fight.

Who in their right mind would want to live in New York City??!!

I dunno what the fuck it is about I-talians in America, but the Italians in Italy are some of my favorite people in the world. I'm guessing most Italian immigrants in America came from the 3rd world parts of Italy.

NY transplants to this area are the worst. They bring their confrontational attitudes down here and try to bully their way about town.

I've worked with two on seperate work projects and our rental neighbors are recent transplants. In all instances, they are rude, bullying and nobody likes them. The work experience was hell trying to cut through all of the bluster and "tough talk". It was as if I was from a neighboring gang and these guys had to be alpha dog, despite the fact that we were their client. Stupid.

My neighbors have managed to alienate themselves in a matter of 3 months (no lie) from everyone else on street our because of their bratty, bitchy, bullying kids. Try to bring it to the mom's attention and all you get is "talk to the hand" type of shit. Nobody on the street even talks to them anymore and can't wait for the lease to be up. And what's funnier is that when the kids first moved in they said "yeah, everyone hated us in our old neighborhood so we had to move." WTF? You'd think you'd figure out that you're the problem.

Fuck New York and all of the people who live there.

I like to visit once or twice a year. I usually go by train (express). I make a hotel reservation by Hotwire and always stay in a nice 4 star. I think people who visit have a bad time when they expect things to be the same wherever they go. New York is different. It's crowded, and busy but it's a difference to be celebrated not dreaded. I was lost once and a very nice lady noticed my expression and actually stopped, asked me if she could help and gave me the directions I nneded to find the playhouse I was looking for. In a side note, she informed me that Off Broadway refered to the number of seats in the theater, not a location.

@city or burbs ()-

I've been on business trips to Richmond VA and Richmond is quite famous for their food. You saying the food in VA is terrible tells me you don't know what you are talking about. When I was in Richmond I could stop at a strip mall Thai restaurant and have some of the best Thai food I've ever had. Yes, in a strip mall. In the future I'd suggest you actually have some idea of what you are talking about before opening your mouth.

I've been there, never going back. Been to Philly, Chicago, Pitsville, Detroit.
You name it. Never going back.
Just about everything east of the Missippi is Crapville.
I lived in Houston for eleven years and it beat any city I've been in the East.
Houston SUX big time.
I now live deep in the woods, can't see any neighbors houses. Can't see my house from any road anywhere.
See wild hogs almost every day, deer every day or so. Last week I saw the second Grey Wolf I've ever seen in the wild. Right out my back door.
Big and beautiful.
I go out about once a month and keep my skills up with my hand gun and rifle right in my back yard. No matter what direction I shoot can I hit anyone unless I shoot way up high and just happen to hit someone when it comes down. I'm not stupid enough to do that.
No sirenes, no loud cars etc. Once in a while a loud truker who thinks Jaking if fun.
Sort of like idiot Harley jerks ripping out half the muffeler baffels.

I live six miles from the largest city in the next door county. It has a population of just over 7,000. It's two damned big for me.
It's almost twice large as the county seat of my county.
If it's big enough to have two red lights its time to get the hell out of dodge.

I really feal for you dopes in the city.
I just can't reach you.
Bye now

Grew up in NoVA, living in NYC and you guys are full of shit. NYC is a bazillian times better then DC. Don't need a car. Walk everywhere. if you don't like walking, take a Bus, subway, taxis, black car. Hell they have access-a-ride that picks up seniors and take them anywhere they want for 2.50! Not like DC where you have to walk a mile AFTER taking a 45min ride on the metro.

Everything at your fingertips here. Food is fucking fantastic. Bars on every block. Theater is top notch. Shop for whatever you want.

Visitors make the mistake of going to the touristy things or staying in timesquare and then complaining about the crowds. No fucking shit! locals don't go ANYWHERE near timesquare (hell I don't like to go anywhere above 14th street). Hang in the east village if you like it a little edgy else go to west village, soho (this is getting too touristy too). Skip little italy (yep too touristy). Go to the lower east side, chinatown for cheap grub.

The biggest myth about NYC? the people are flipping nice! yeah you get an occasional douchebag here and there (though I honestly can't remember the last db I came across) but for the most part people will help you if you're lost or have a question. Shops/Bartenders remember you; very community centric.

To the guy who paid $4 for a slice, I call bullshit. It's 2.25/2.50 a slice and several $1 places around. happy hour prices in EV are $3/beer. $2 PBR at plenty of places. There's a place near me that advertises $10 for 5 shots.

Anyways, if anyone wants to hook up for a drink or 5 when they're in the city, let me know. I lived in NoVA for about 20yrs and love flippin' NYC. Don't let people scare ya. It's a great town. Happy to answer any questions or dispell any myths.

Food is fantastic! No idea what you're talking about. Yeah pizza is nice (I actually prefer Chicago style but that's me) but it's not like you eat it everyday. We actually order from Papa Johns as $11 a pie, it's hard to beat and it taste fine.

That's cuz there's no Walmart here. Depends on where you shop. Part of the fun is knowing where to go (and not to go)

Yeah the B&T crowd can be douchy.

I like Chicago too but not sure I'd say it was better. Need to spend some more time there.

Yep, yep and yep!

Yep me too. I like to stay on the fringes and avoid crowded noisy bars most of the time. Nice thing is when I feel like engaging, no shortage of places to pick from.

Wegmans is good though we do have Trader Joes and Whole Foods here not to mention specialty shops, butchers, cheese shops, a bazillion wine shops (that deliver!). Not sure what foods I miss from NoVA that I can't get up here (maybe the fajitas at Rio Grande though there are some great mexican places here!). Great local diners too.

The convenience here is unbeatable.

If you grew up in NoVA well then you are not an NYC guy you are a transplant. Stop trying to impress us with your NYC cred. You are still a NoVA donk.

New York is second only to California in generous welfare benefits. That could explain it.

I once went traveling and drove my Prius right smack into New York City, all by myself.

There were so many people and they were all different colors. It was like a rainbow but a scary one.

I was shaking like an autumn leaf after this guy on a bike hit my arm that was signaling to make a left turn. I don't use my blinkers cuz that uses too much of this planet's precious energy.

I caught up to him at a light and suggested he be more careful. He told me fuck off and bent my windshield wiper.

I drove straight back to Virginia, watching the clouds, scared to death it might rain. I don't drive in the rain.
