By 2005, the most recent year data are available, our top 1 percent of filers were paying nearly 40 percent of the federal income tax bill, while those in the 2nd to 5th percentile paid another 20 percent. Every other group saw its share of the tax bill decline, sometimes substantially. Those taxpayers in the 26th to 50th percentile (that is, with an adjusted gross income roughly between $31,000 and $62,000) paid 11 percent of all federal income taxes, down from 20 percent back in 1980, while those in the 11th to 25th percentiles (earning between $62,000 and $104,000 today), paid 16 percent of the federal tax bill, down from 24 percent in 1980.

We'll see in 2011 how well the party of cutting government actually does at, you know, cutting government and/or ending distorting subsidies such as the mortgage interest tax deduction.

I fail to see how folks can't get behind means-testing Social Security or freezing payouts at current levels and then means-testing some sort of supplemental Social Security that is itself means-tested (said supplement would then get increased.)

Wham! Wealthy seniors aren't sucking at the government teat anymore! (Of course the idiots at Kos would oppose this idea as would the newly-energized Democratic caucus.)

I suspect they'll run into the face of the "Get government out of my Medicare" bloc and no real progress will be made in rolling back government's role in American life. (What progress was made between 2001-06, for example, and why has the GOP changed since then?)

I don't think Boehner or McConnell will shut down government after having to sit on the back of a plane, though.

We can't give tax cuts to the poor, only the rich.

News break... regardless of what the government does, most truly rich people aren't paying taxes anyway because they can pay someone to get them out of doing so by coming up with creative ways to manipulate tax code, store their wealth in other countries, charities etc. Most of it's not illegal, because the IRS hasn't thought of it yet or its outside their jurisdiction. Upping taxes on rich people just gives them more incentive to move it elsewhere. Thinking that increasing the tax rate on rich people will net a lot more revenue is pretty naive, yet this is the same schtick that gets sold to the gullible public all the time.
