Hurricane Earl

It keeps tracking further and further east. As of now there is a decent chance it will glance up the outerbanks/VA Beach area. But the progression for the past few days has trended it westerly with every update. If such tendencies continue we or the NYC region could be facing a major hurricane by weeks' end. Interesting stuff.

you know what's even funnier:

a 50+ year old woman with a severe anxiety disorder, borderline personality disorder, and alcohol addiction who also has a compulsion to constantly look at your phone in case it rings. also you realize that most people in society would find your anxiety and obsessive-compulsive tendencies to be a bit odd, so you promise college students sex in exchange for money. then in your sick head, you fall in love with these people, and become stalker crazy for them because you are afraid of being alone.

If it heads this way, you actually better do that. Remember how just a hand full of thunderstorms knocked out the power to half-a-million D.C. area residents for days on end this past month?

I'm on the Outer Banks right now. Surf has been very heavy, and some of the beaches have been closed for swimming. Saw some major swells out there this morning. The local forecast is for Earl to approach overnight Thursday with rain and high winds most of the day Friday. Saturday is supposed to be sunny, but I would still expect rough seas.

Where in the Outer Banks are you - try and go to Hatteras if you can even if Earl curves up the coast, it will most likely at least glance Hatteras and that should be fairly impressive as it will be a strong 4 if not a weak 5.

I'm in Kitty Hawk, NC. I was in Hatteras on Sunday and won't be down that way again this trip. People here seem pretty unworried about the storm, myself included. Unless there's a full-scale evacuation, I'm staying right here until the weekend, when I return to NoVA. If I have to spend a day sitting on my balcony watching wind & heavy rain, so be it!

I snapped this picture earlier tonite. Hurricanes bring good humor. I suspect alot of packed bars and "hurricane parties" if the storm hits.

You better watch out, because the Outer Banks are forecasted to get at least 100 MPH winds for between 6-12 hours of duration.

At it's currently forecasted path you're going to be on the western (relatively safer side) of this storm if you're Kitty Hawk. But this storm is a bit of a beast - solid 4 and likely to stay strong 3-5 range when it gets to your neck of the woods.

I predicted the storm a couple days ago would glance the outerbanks area. I think there is a good chance this will be a bit more than a glance even with 'only' being hit with the western wall. Given the size and strength of this storm, this could be rather painful for that region of NC.

As such, I imagine there will be mandatory evacuations especially for the lower banks (ocracoke to at least rodanthe). Long Island and points north will also get hit at least by the western side of this beast - going to be hearing a lot about this storm over the next couple days.

Meeper if you stay put down there - keep us posted - what is the surf like etc.

Meeper if you're still down there be safe and try and take lots of photos/videos especially of the surf. Waves just a few miles off-shore are expected to reach 48'+, onshore waves are likely to top 15-20'. Given that, I imagine at least the southern stretches of the outer banks are going to see some rather extensive and impressive flooding. In your area I also imagine there will be flooding likely, probably at least in the 2-3' range throughout town. Wish I was down there to see this storm...I'm just an armchair meteorologist =)

No worries... I'd be more worried of a tsunami while at OBX.

Army corps of engineers in Duck, NC are gonna enjoy the hurricane the most.

Update:

I'm still here. Beaches were red flagged all day, so no swimming. I took a walk down the beach around 5, the waves were very heavy, with a pronounced tide dragging everything northward. Some large waves seemed to hit the beach at a 45 degree angle.

Things seemed normal until I went out for the evening. A cop pulled into the local 7-11 and told them to stop selling alcohol because of the 'state of emergency'. I got nervous, so we immediately pulled into the Brew & Thru to make sure we had beer for the next few days. The clerk there said the cops hadn't gotten to him yet, so we were able to buy it.

Local bars were DEAD tonite. The bartenders seemed tense about the police shutting down alcohol sales. I kinda got the sense that these bars were also told to stop serving, but these places remained open anyway (with basically no one there). Things seemed pretty shady.

All's quiet right now. No plan on leaving unless there's a full scale evacuation. I keep hearing rumors but no one's sure what will happen tomorrow.

I tell ya what, the lunch I had at Cracker Barrel was the only meal I've eaten all day and I'm still not hungry. That's retarded.

The food ain't that great, but it's cheap and tastes good. It's the perfect meal if you're tired, hungover, and don't want to stop again to eat on a long, hard drive. Their starchy, greasy food loaded with salt got me thru the day! And a whole meal is like 11 bucks!

It's almost like a Nutri-System type of diet - "Eat one meal each day!!". Too bad the meal is like 4,000 calories.

That looks like it's down toward Hatteras. Those people were evacuated on Wednesday morning. I've heard of some wind damage up toward Kitty Hawk and Nags Head, but the island doesn't get breached like that up there.

Looking more closely, I don't see highway 12 anywhere in that photo, so it's hard to say where that was taken. where did you get this picture?
