The Muslim is called to prayer five times a day. The call to prayer is heard at dawn, at the midday, about the middle of the afternoon, just after sunset, and at night fall about two hours after sunset.

The muezzin, a man appointed to call to prayer, climbs the mineret of the mosque, and he calls in all directions, "Hasten to prayer." Many mosques no longer require the muezzin to climb the mineret. Instead, a loud speaker carries the message.


I'm not sure how I would feel standing at the Ground Zero Memorial and from 2 blocks away I hear this blaring over a loud speaker 5 times a day.




I use to live close to a church that would blare its bell boom box. I guess I kind of got use to it.

I just finished my morning prayer. Can't wait till the next one.

What they should do is simply make the place a multi-faith, multi-cultural center, and have it be run by a Rabbi, an Imam, and a Bishop. If they truly want to foster the ideals of tolerance and understanding, then this is the way to accomplish it.

So your point is that a religion with a billion and a half people should be judged based on the actions of a few, and because of that radical generalization, we (America) should emulate the intolerant viewpoints of Middle Eastern countries?

No - my point is that we are very tolerant in the US of ALL religions, and generally allow them to build wherever they want, and within the limits of zoning and urban needs, etc. So here we have a case where we have what amounts to a war wound, inflicted on the US - and in particular the folks of NY City - by a radical sect of Islam - one that is also not easily identifiable by their wearing red flags, or some other symbol that instantly denotes them as RADICAL JIHADIST types. Because of that, it is perfectly reasonable that a certain amount of caution - or even downright hostility would be expected when a group that 'could be affiliated with' that sect shows up and wants to build a worship center in proximity to the site where the war was arguably started on a larger playing field. There was no easy way for the man on the street to have a clue which and what mosques were bad ones before the attack, so now folks are saying 'hey, we don't like it - especially here where the results of that attack are still being seen regularly, and pieces of 'stuff' found from time to time.

For us to emulate those other countries, we would just totally ban the building of mosques in the US, or we would force them to always be built on garbage dumps or other toxic waste dumps.

Right now there is a (I believe) Greek Orthodox church that was in the shadow of the WTC that was crushed, and the Port Authority is blocking them rebuilding because of a variety of reasons - the least of which is they want to take/buy the land for building the NEW site.

Yes, logic and the law says it is fine for them to build a new mosque/cultural center wherever zoning allows - that is not in dispute. What is at the heart of the issue is the feelings of the folks in proximity to the site, and the folks that were affected by 9/11. Hell - I didn't like it when they built a church on the corner where my house is - mainly because there would be horrible traffic issues when it was finished (born out and true) and it would make it harder to get in and out of my neighborhood at certain times. I still don't like the place - but does that mean I am prejudiced against churches because they increase traffic and I know it? I suppose folks that didn't want the Disney America site in Haymarket are Mickey Mouse bigots? And they certainly managed to get that derailed even after they had funding secured and all the property rights in place. Certainly churches and mosques have the right to build on property as well - but if the folks in the area don't want them there, there is a good chance they will prevail in some manner and force them to move it elsewhere. The lawsuits alone will most likely tie the place up for a long time.

Well buddy we aren't in Saudi Arabia, so it doesnt matter what the Saudis or any other nation for that matter allows or doesnt allow. Here in the United States we have freedom of religion and equal protection under the law. If their mosque meets all local code requirements, zoning, ect.. Then I dont see any reason why anyone should stop them from building it, no matter what its location. If we as Americans start banning things that some find offensive... well God help us when that starts happening.

Seems like the French have just about had enough. Muslims have been stepping up their protests a bit by blocking streets during afternoon prayer on Fridays citing lack of mosque space as the reason. However lots of them drive across town to attend
