I'd always say a Jack Russell, because I have two. They're tough, scrappy dogs, and most of them still have working blood within them (ie, They're top-notch hunting dogs). You need to be careful with letting them roam free though, because they'll chase after anything and everything. Also, in case that chasing happens to take them into a subterranean tunnel, they have been known to stay "To-ground" for days at a time.

I'm not a dog person, but my brother has a Boston Terrier that I think is great. It's a small, friendly dog, that can can be funny & energetic when you play with it, and it's good with kids. It always makes me laugh when my brother jogs with the dog on a leash- the dog seems thrilled to be running like that and it looks funny. They're also considered to be a smart breed that is not prone to bad behavior. Great small dog for a family.

Jack russells are really adorable, have good personalities, and good energy.

If you have 2 acres you might not need to worry about walking it. But, it will need to run around.

I haven't seen too many families with yorkies, just old ladies. I think that's because they're so little, the chances of stepping on them and killing them accidently are high. I'm not kidding. It's scary.

Chiwawas are yappy and annoying.

Dacsunds and Yorkis are cute. It seems that Yorkis tend to get fat, though.
Because they're not real energetic.

So, I think you have to figure out if the family will want a playful, energetic
dog or a lumpy dog (some people actually perfer those, because they don't have to walk them or provide a yard for them to run around).
Forget the yorkie. You don't want one of your kids to kill the family dog and
then have to go to therapy for the rest of their lives)

I don't like dogs, but I love my chihuahua. We've had her for 7 years, and she is a dream. She uses a litterbox, never barks and is great with our 2 year old.

Dachshunds often have serious back problems. Yorkies are known to have many health problems, such as luxating patellas (problems with the knee caps) which requires surgery. In addition to being so small and fragile, not a good dog for small children. Chihuahua's are very yappy. And can also be fragile, depending on their size. Jack Russells are hyper, they HAVE to get a lot of exercise.

All these breeds are adorable. Just know what you are getting into before you bring the cute little ball of fur home. Enjoy your dog whatever breed you get!

The best way to determine what small dog to get is by how
far you can punt one.
