TIME TRAVEL - Traveling the Speed of Light
Posted by: Powerful_Crab ()
Date: August 19, 2010 03:52PM

So, anyone else agree, if you travel the speed of light, you yourself age slower than people who are not traveling at the speed of light...

So if you go FASTER than the speed of light than you will go back in time????

Certainly slowing down the speed of light does not achieve anything more than the study of light itself... which has already happened. (slowed light to 38 mph)

Anyone have any other theories on time travel?

My limited understanding of the subject is that as you travel closer to the speed of light, you will age slower than those you left behind. At the same time, I don't believe it is considered possible for matter to travel faster than the speed of light and remain intact as what we would consider "matter."That's why there are concepts such as "warp speed," where you travel a more direct path along the fabric of time and space instead of actually exceeding 186,000 miles per second. If that's true, you would not go back in time by going faster than the speed of light. However, if you believe in multiple universes, I guess it is theoretically possible to move from one line of time to another, but it wouldn't necessarily involve speed as the means for accomplishing this.

Then again, I'm not physicist.

Aging slower is POTENTIALLY an effect of near or light speed travel. To say you could go back in time if you go faster than the speed of light, is really an outlandish assertion with no reasoning provded for your theory.

I think one day in the future, they'll figure out a way to merge all the analog data in our brains, digitize it and send your consciousness to other places (and maybe times), convert it back to some mobile device (such as a robot or drone helicopter type device). This would great for long distance visits on other planets, meteors, space station conferences, etc......

This way no actual matter is transferred after the mobile device is in place. We could put a "receiver" on the Mars rover or something similar on every suitable planet without the stress of losing lives. Even if the mobile device is destroyed, the data is still preserved at the launch point.

It's physically impossible to go faster than the speed of light. If you throw away that law of physics, you throw away every law of physics. And if you throw away the laws of physics, any answer you might get, no matter how ridiculous, is just as plausible as the next. There's no way to predict what would happen.

I believe it is only possible with some plutonium and a flux capacitor.

in simple terms, everything moving faster will move slower. since you cant accelerate to the speed of light but only close to it, you could go long distances and while it would seem to be a short time thousands of years may have passed.

> So if you go FASTER than the speed of light than

you cannot accelerate to the speed of light much less accelerate beyond it. that said, it's may be possible to become faster than the speed of light by changing your velocity without acceleration. how to create such an effect is unknown. alternatively, there is the theory of spacetime folding which didnt work out very well in Event Horizon.

traveling backwards in time is not possible because time is really just a relativistic construct to convey the measure of movement at similar velocities. which is why when traveling at different velocities the whole idea of time falls apart.

Numbers, what do Christians call our 'conciousness'?

Basically you are talking about transfering the essence of who we are to another location to go AROUND the laws of physics.

Christians call this personality identifier or marker a 'soul'.

Now since you believe our 'souls' are not subject to the laws of physics, then why would GOD limit himself to such rules? And why do you question a being that is so outside of our physical comprehension with your evolution BS so adamantly on this board?

You are starting to contradict yourself now.

Yes, the theory stands that if time stands still at the speed of light, then it reverses past that point. A black hole is one method of traveling back in time, IF you can find a way to survive being so close to it. Lab created black holes are the most likely method for reverse time travel. Now, the only questions are: How do you transport a living humanoid through such conditions in a safe manner, AND, how do you bring them back to the present?

No, I'm not. Why would anything I mentioned not apply to the laws of physics? We're already doing this with audio and video. Consciousness, or as you call it, the soul, is simply our past experiences, our character and really electrical activity in our brains. This is how we move our muscles, talk, hear, etc....

All we need to do is convert these analog signals to digital and send them over cat5 or through 4G (the future will obviously have faster and wider bandwidth). How does this disobey the laws of physics?

Yeah, and........

Why do you believe in a being thats out of our physical comprehension?
You have absolutely no reason to.

Evolution has been tested, retested and confirmed repeatedly and it also makes perfect sense to those who take the time to understand it. That's why I believe it. Why do you believe in fairy tales with 0 evidence and that make no sense at all?

> You are starting to contradict yourself now.

No contradiction here. You're just to obtuse to comprehend.

Numbers, your gross 'obtuse'ness is quite evident.

What is the smallest unit of time we have developed yet? Nanoseconds? Picoseconds?

How small can it go? Can it be divided infinitely? Is there a cut off?

Light can only go so fast before it maxes out... Doesn't it seem like the same could be said of time?

Does time progress at the speed of light?

How can you measure the speed of time?

"The Planck Time" is the smallest measure of time physically possible. Someone posted a video about this awhile back. It's basically the time it takes for a photon of light to travel the Planck Length (the smallest length physically possible.)

Quantum physics gets pretty damn weird.

Yes. NBC and Sam Beckett showed us the way back in the 90's.

A few days ago I was watching an old episode of Dr. Who from the Tom Baker era and I was a little surprised to here the characters talking about Quantum Mechanics. I used to think a lot of the dialog from that show was just gobbledeegook, but as I watch those old episodes from the 60's and 70's, I'm amazed at how much of it is actually real and ahead of its time. Even back in the Jon Pertwee episodes they mention hydrogen powered vehicles and solar powered devices.

What I really need now is a magnetic core extractor.

If Troll@AOL were to go faster than the speed of light, would it be possible for him to become dumber?

I really don't think so. He's pretty much reached the pinnacle of stupidity.

Meade must've traveled faster than the speed of light... What other explanation is there for his boyish good looks?

He looks better at 30 than most people do in their early twenties!

Meade's a time traveler, y'all...

I knew that Meade wasn't born his boyish good looks and that there was some secret of youth he was holding back.

Damn you Meade!

Whyist doth thou keepeth thine light speed frometh us?

You guys need to read up on the latest ideas regarding time travel, both forward and back.

Probability computing will play a role in whatever technique is used based on this idea.

Interesting...

I think one thing to think about also is that time itself is a measurement of our universe. Without time there would be nothing left to "move forward" to in our everyday lives. I doubt anything could even exist. The big bang theory wouldn't of happened nor evolution or the creation of man. (Notice: this applies to any kind of religious/scientific belief).

The only missing piece of research is the ability to travel as fast as light. I once thought that slowing down the speed of light was the key to slowing down time but my imagination overcame he laws of this world... =]

So since we were able to slow down the speed of light by making the matter the light passes through more dense, if we could "rip" out our own atmosphere temporarily (the first step to achieve the speed of light within Earth's atmosphere) we could focus on doing research with different types of elements in a vacuum and possibly even create a new transit system to get from one end of the earth to another in a matter of seconds.

BTW United States is cutting down on our space program while Russia is taking over... Hopefully, the Russians will think of something soon.. I want to visit the galaxy and perhaps one day realize the true laws of physics in this existence.
