HIgh Priced Vacation for Michelle Obama
Posted by: WingNut ()
Date: August 06, 2010 09:51AM

While us little people are asked to "sacrifice", Michelle Obama and 40 of her friends are living large on the coast of Spain in rooms that cost $2500 a day. Secret service is there in numbers on our dime and Air Force 2 burned the fuel to get them there.

Hmmm. Maybe a nice move would have been to vacation a little more modestly stateside. The Gulf Coast could use the positive PR (not to mention the money) or maybe somewhere in Nevada that has been battered by the recession? Maybe go buy a stupid ranch in Texas and go chop wood even?

No. Go to an exclusive swath of a failed semi-socialist Euro nation that up until her trip had a State Department warning about the 'racism" dark skinned Americans may face over there.

No. The Obamas aren't Kenyans or Muslims. There not full fledged socialists and probably not racists. But despite their talk of caring for the working class and their sacrifice, they are no different than any other phoney fuck politico that came before them. Enjoy the gravy train while it lasts.

I love how the article stated that she is vacationing with 40 of her "closest friends." Come on, what bullshit. While I believe someone can have 40 friends, who has 40 that are "close" enough that you want to spend a vacation with them? Maybe 4 or 5, but 40? I bet it is more like 40 people traveling in her party or 40 of her entourage - not "close friends".

On going to Copenhagen to pitch Chicago for the 2016 Olympics-

“As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the president to come for these few days,” the First Lady told a group of fellow Chicago 2016 boosters, “so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home.”

At Muskingum College, Zanesville,Ohio

Michelle Obama, during a recent campaign trip, stopped by in this struggling town and warned the locals to not go for the big money, to steer clear of the money grubbing in private sector. "We left corporate America, which is a lot of what we're asking young people to do," she told a group of women at a day-care center. "Don't go into corporate America. You know, become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. Be a nurse. Those are the careers that we need, and we're encouraging our young people to do that. But if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money-making industry into the helping industry, then your salaries respond."

Forty friends is pretty funny. The list is probably loaded with people she is returning favors to or expecting favors from.

For clarification, the First Family is planning a family vacation to the Gulf coast in the coming weeks. Also, Michelle Obama and the family friends are paying their own way. Of course, there are taxpayer costs for Secret Service, transportation, etc. And the appearance isn't great. But in terms of actual cost to the taxpayers, I would venture to guess that taxpayers were billed by the Bush family for use of the ranch in Texas, as well as all of the other costs involved for "official business," so the idea that a month in Crawford was exponentially cheaper on the taxpayers than a trip to Spain is somewhat questionable.

Bush was then, Obama is NOW.I think if you want to look back at those years, Bush golfed far less than Obama, but that proves nothing.

I didn't catch the comparison with Crawford. The parts of this story that stands out to me are-

1) America is in an economic recession and our tourist industry could use the money that is instead going overseas.

2)The Obamas have a history of talking about "sacrifice", slamming the rich and phony populism in general.

I'm not defending it, especially from a perception standpoint. I'm just clarifying what's actually happening. As for precedent, Nancy Reagan and Mary Todd Lincoln fell under similar criticism in their time.

You peed your pants when you were a child.

Let's talk about who's pissing in their pants TODAY though, when we all should know better.

TODAY being the metaphor for an economically strapped America.

I was disappointed when Obama won, but I figured he's going to steer the ship, I have to hope he won't suck. I hoped we'd get some sense of nationalism, protection of U.S jobs and workers which is something the dems can get right rarely.

No, it's typical "bash the rich" bullshit and then live just like them. I'm sorry for the true believers that were conned, Obama is a double-talking product of the same political class we've always had.

I think the only thing worse then "bashing the rich" is bashing the poor. As if the rich earned every penny without the help of the Govt....and that the poor want more then what they need to make a living wage. Much more has been done to improve the lot of the working man by the hard sweat of their own labor...nothing has been given to labor that wasnt fought for and earned. Its time for this country to stop hating the working men and women...and kissing the ass of the rich.

I dont know anyone who beleived Obama was going to change the world...we expected him to improve the world....and he has. Nothing promised by Republican politicians has the hope of improving a thing.

Your refernce to "babbons" hints of racism..your use of the word "retard" shows you can only feel good about yourself by degrading others. You are a pitiful human being.

Personally, I'm not surprised. All of them are the same. Slick talking con men who say whatever they can to get in and once in place, just sit back with that elitist mentality and do whatever they can to stay in power.

I'm a Dem and at one time a serious Obama supporter. To me, this is appalling. Americans everywhere are hurting and this Administration seems to be telling people to sacrifice. Whether or not they're paying their way, the Obamas are doing just the opposite. The average American can't dream of going to Spain and staying in ritzy hotels for $2500 a night. The average American can't afford to eat lobster rissoto. The average American can't dish out $325K for a vacay. I hate to say it, but the Obamas have just proven to be massive hypocrites. Do as I say, not as I do. We're worth millions, you're not. Don't go into corporate America and make your millions, write a bunch of books about yourself and get elected. Shame on Obama.

Well that explains the steady(and possibly worsening) unemployment rate.

That right there makes all your other points moot.

Bravo, retard.

This is from Obama's inaugural address. Any other questions?

http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/politics&id=6616167

This is from just after his election:

http://washingtonindependent.com/20111/obama-calls-for-sacrifice

This is from Feb. of this year:

"When times are tough, you tighten your belts" said the President. "You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash on Vegas when you're trying to save for college. You prioritize. You make tough choices."

Not to mention his statements on accountability above.

Vince, you initially asked when he "asked" the American people to sacrifice. He's done so repeatedly. I showed you where. What you're taking issue with is that he hasn't "made" Americans sacrifice. I maintain he has in numerous ways.

Don't be obtuse. Vince, I'm a Dem. I'm was an Obama supporter. You can't seriously fail to see the massive hypocrisy that Obama is showing here. This is a very bad PR move and it makes me really wonder if all that bullshit about being a man of the people is just that...bullshit. He made $10 mm last year. He's not sacrificing. People are hurting out there. They expect their President to understand that. Not speechify then send his wife off an a $375K vacation. If you're so happy that people don't practive what they preach, you should be a Republican.

Surely you're not this stupid. No one is saying she can't go on vacations. They're saying she shouldn't be spending tax dollars to go to Spain with her friends in the lap of luxury. There's a not-so-subtle difference, get it?

Read this: "You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime. There's got to be some accountability and some responsibility.” Tell me how the first lady's actions comport to that principle.

Not that anybody from the right is ever interested in facts but here are some:

First, some numbers. Mrs. Obama did not travel with 40 friends, a number used by some news outlets.

She vacationed with two women, one of them a longtime Chicago pal, Anita Blanchard, who is the obstetrician who delivered Sasha and Malia. Blanchard is married to Marty Nesbitt -- President Obama's buddy and the treasurer of Obama's presidential campaign fund.

There was one other woman. Total: four daughters among the three women. They paid for their hotel rooms and other personal and travel expenses.

A White House source told me that Blanchard's father passed away and Mrs. Obama was not able to make the funeral at the beginning of July. Blanchard had promised her daughter she would take her to Spain for her birthday. She asked Mrs. Obama and Sasha to come with. (Malia is at overnight camp.)

"She felt it was important as a dear friend to do this," I was told.

How did they end up at the five star Villa Padierna, part of the Ritz-Carlton chain? Because of security concerns, there were just some places they could not go. Agents were able to secure Villa Padierna and the nearby beach area.

voter, I know there are legitimate reasons for taking the vacation. And I imagine that the story of Mrs. Obama's excesses are exagarated. But, the vacaction cost somewhere between $250K-$375K, which the American taxpayer footed. In the midst of the worst receission in 80 years, that's not acceptable, no matter how you want to parse the facts. If she needed time off, she could have avoided the scrutiny and just gone to Yellowstone, the Outer Banks, Santa Fe, with her friend. No one would have said a word.

As I stated earlier, read this statement. Tell me how the First Lady's actions comport with its principle. "You can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayers' dime. There's got to be some accountability and some responsibility."

BY LYNN SWEET Sun-Times Columnist
WASHINGTON--Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha returned from Spain on Sunday, a vacation at a lavish hotel on the Mediterranean coast that triggered her first controversy since becoming first lady. I'm told she made the trip because she promised one of her closest friends, a longtime Chicago pal who just lost her father, she would spend time with her.

I really don't give a shit what she does. Even the best estimates I've seen of 75 thousand dollars a day in tax payer money being spent doesn't bother me. But I have to laugh when the White House spin team starts throwing out the "Grieving friend" card. How classless.

It wasn't on the taxpayer's dime--the Obama's paid for the trip with their personal funds as they do many other things. They paid for the renovations to the White House out of their own funds too, which other presidents haven't done. The taxpayers pay for security and other government related expenses whenever the president or first lady go anywhere--that's just the way it has to be in the age we live in. Complaints like these are just a matter of people who don't like the Obama's faking outrage. I didn't notice people like you complaining about Bush spending money to go to his ranch or Cheney out fly fishing every weekend.

First off, I'm an Obama voter. Second, Bush and Cheney were morons, but don't change the subject. It's really tiresome to hear people defending Obama by bashing Bush. O's been in office for 18 months; he should stand on his own record.

Third, the taxpayer is footing the bill. Round trip costs on AF2 and security detail are all paid by the taxpayer. Fourth, and most importantly, don't sit there and defend what amounts to a lavish vacaction in a foreign country in the midst of the worst recession in 80 years. Please, for God sake, answer my question--how is this defensible politically or financially? How can we criticize Wall St. for its excesses and ask the American people to sacrifice when the FL is on a $300K vacation in Spain and staying at the best hotel in the country. It just shows what hyprocrites so many limousine liberals are. Evyerone needs to sacrifice, except them. What a joke.

I'm not bashing Bush. I had no problem with taxpayers paying for Bush's security during personal trips--it's just part of the deal. I bring it up because people are holding the Obama's to a different standard.

We pay for security and travel costs all of the time--nothing that can be done about it.

I don't have a problem with the first lady going on a nice trip. The Reagan's and the Kennedy's made the White House glamorous and I think that's the way it should be. We could save a few bucks by burning down the White House and having our president live in an efficiency apartment in Anacostia too--is that the image you want for America?

Yes, the Obamas should be held to a different standard. They, and the country, wanted that different, higher standard. All that rhetoric about accountability blah blah blah. Also, things have changed. You don't take a lavish vacation now when so many Americans are hurting.

You're being deliberatly ingnorant. There is a real difference between--both in terms of cost and degree-- the FL going to the Gulf Coast or Camp David for a family vacay than there is an overseas trip to tour Spain with her friends.

Neither do I. See above. I want her to be aware of the predicament of other Americans and how she is perceived. Your point is reducio ad absurdum. No one is saying the Presidency shouldn't be glamorous. People are saying you should display the kind of sacrifice and self-awareness that the President himself preaches. In the midst of WWII, President Roosavelt--no stanger to glamor--allowed sheep to graze on the South Lawn to save the cost of hiring personnel away from the war effort. However small, that symbolized the type of sacrifice the President was asking the country to make. Now compare the FL.

The story behind this expensive trip is drivel. It's pathetic to attempt to justify it by describing it, as if it really is OK since it is the doctor that delivered Michelle's kids. Taxpayers ARE paying for AF2, security/Secret Service, etc. No weaseling out of that.

Obamas are apparently too far above the regular Americans to downsize in this economy. Michelle is getting her free exotic vacations NOW before they get voted out in 2012. It seems like Obamas don't even LIKE being at the White House. It's not fun anymore.

Michelle Obama lunches with Spain's royal family as backlash over her extravagant holiday continues back home
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1301302/Michelle-Obama-lunches-Spains-royal-family-backlash-extravagant-holiday-continues-home.html
U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and her younger daughter lunched with Spain's King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia today at the royal summer residence on the Balearic island of Majorca.

Mrs Obama, nine-year-old Sasha and their entourage flew into the Majorcan capital of Palma from the glitzy Mediterranean resort of Marbella, where they have been staying since Wednesday at a deluxe hotel.

The lunch is Mrs Obama's last engagement in Spain before flying home to Washington DC, where she has come under fire for her lavish break on the Costa del Sol with 40 friends, which has been estimated at costing U.S. taxpayers £50,000 a day.
...

That is about $75K per day of the public money:

...The exact cost of the trip is unclear as Mrs Obama, 46, and her friends are footing personal expenses themselves - which is just as well.

For a start, they will be paying for the 60 rooms booked at the 129-room Hotel Villa Padierna. With basic rooms starting around £380 each, the nightly bill will be no less than £22,800.

Meals will also be picked up by the Obamas and friends.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo detailed the Obamas' dinner on their first night in Spain. The tapas menu for the delegation included sea bass tartare, strawberry gazpacho and sardines, followed by a main course of lobster with seaweed risotto.

The meal cost about £40 a head, according to El Mundo - which means a bill topping £1,600 would have hit the table if all 40 friends dined together.

Stretched over five nights that's £8,000 for dinner alone.

Whether or not the taxpaying American will be paying for meals, they will definitely be footing the bill for the First Lady's 68-strong security detail, her personal staff - and the use of presidential jet Air Force Two.

The per diems for the secret service team runs at around £172 each, which amounts to nearly £60,000 for the length of the summer break.

Use of Air Force Two, the Air Force version of a 757, comes in at £91,900 for the round trip. This does not include time on the ground.

Mrs Obama's personal staff, of which there are an unknown amount and who might cost considerably more per day, also have to be taken into account.

The American public will also cover the cost of the only official part of the holiday, a visit to the Spanish royal family on the island of Majorca.

This will involve transport there and back for the entourage - as well as travel, accommodation, food and expenses for all while on the island.

Conservative estimates already put the total cost at £150,000. With Majorca to come, the bill will be more like £250,000
...

So regardless of the personal expense for a hotel for part of their trip - there is a huge amount of money being spent overseas on this "jaunt". Maybe they would have been better served to go to some destination in the US and invite the Spanish Royal Family there. At least then the money would have been spent here in the US.

Because she is married to the President of the United States of America, and because she's still a person. Not a single person crying about this would pass up the same opportunity if it was handed to them. Y'all just hatin'.

Because nobody elected the Wall Street executives that fucked around with peoples' money. I know it's tempting to view this as a case of the Haves vs the Have Nots, but let's keep a little perspective, here. The government wasn't short-selling stocks, selling bad investiments, and committing fraud. If the banking system was nationalized, then you could argue that the president needs to demonstrate modesty and financial frugality.

Also, these are the privileges we bestow upon the president and their family by electing them to this office. Bush, Clinton, Obama, whoever, it doesn't matter; they all get to do this because they're the fuckin' President. When you get elected, you'll have the same benefits and privileges that the station bestows upon Barack "Hussein" Obama.

You're not going to be elected, though, because you don't have the ambition or capability that he does. This is why you're mad that his wife can go on an awesome vacation in Spain, while you slave away at your job for two nickles to rub together for a weekend trip to "the OBX." Sour grapes, buddy. You may as well be pissed off that the President has an executive chef and an executive pastry chef. "That's a complete waste of tax payer dollars. In this economy, he should be ordering from the McDonalds dollar menu like the rest of us. And really, why can't the main chef just make pastries, too? Why do you need two chefs, OBAMA?!"

Finally, let me tell you about something called "budgets." "Budgets" are amounts of money set aside for different things in the government. These are set aside and established every year. These precious tax payer dollars you're freaking out about were already set aside for Air Force 2's fuel long before Michelle ever got on the plane. The Secret Service agents are going to be paid whether they're protecting her state-side or overseas. If she's paying for personal expenses out of pocket, what's the big deal?

It's always funny to me to hear people bitch about this sort of thing as being a serious waste of government money. All it does is show how painfully oblivious you are to what's really going. This trip is chump change for the government, especially compared to the money wasted everywhere else.

Whether it is chump change or not, we elect the President, not his wife or spouse. If he goes on the trip, it makes sense that we would pay for his wife, children, etc to go along. For her to travel like this by herself - with a load of friends in tow - just seems to be a bit over the top. Regardless of whether or not money is budgeted. For all the little "drop in the bucket" expenses they could cut out, we could probably get rid of at least a billion dollars in chump change expenses. That is nothing to sneeze at.

True, true, Mr. Mephisto. Yet to take such a trip shows an appalling disregard to the serious situation in our country right now. Imagine someone being thoughtless enough to build a mosque at the site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Oh. Someone *IS* building a mosque there. Well, the United States is getting systematically destroyed by Congress and by extremists from other countries. Regular ol' Americans don't matter anymore.

Obamas don't even love the United States. They really aren't ideal leaders for it.

I still don't see what is so offensive about building a mosque near ground zero. Islam didn't bring the towers down, terrorists did. Would people get pissed off if someone built a church near the Murrah Federal Building?

No, it makes sense that his lawfully-wedded wife and their children receive his benefits and priviledges, the same way that every other employee of the government has benefits that extend to their family, as well. If some GS-12 can get a cheap or free flu shot for his wife, it kind of stands to reason that the goddamn President's wife can fly to Spain for a few days.

There seems to be some debate about the actual number of friends.

Or, we could cut out one billion dollar expense and save a billion dollars. "Sure, let's dump trillions into foreign wars, but the First Lady's use of jet fuel is completely unacceptable." Frankly, I think we've gotten more out of Michelle's little trip to Spain than we have with both wars in the Middle East; at least her wasteful expenditure of taxpayer dollars hasn't killed thousands of American soldiers.

If you don't see any problem with a multi-million dollar war plane using thousands of dollars in jet fuel to drop a multi-million dollar smart bomb on some goat farmer's mud hut, then you shouldn't begrudge the First Lady for taking a vacation at a fraction of said bomb's cost.

Funny, I didn't know we were at war with Spain.

Apples and Oranges - and sorry, but last time I checked, working for the government did not mean your spouse suddenly acquired all YOUR benefits as perks. A flu shot is not even on an equivalent playing field as something like this trip. The point is, right now, with all the moaning and groaning over how bad the economy is, and how everyone is supposed to sacrifice, there would be much better trips inside the US they could have gone on. Sure, they still would have gotten criticized for "another vacation", but at least they would have spent the money in the US and helped support local businesses.

The war(s) really has little to do with this discussion. Kind of surprised you would bring it in to make any kind of equivalence statement to tell the truth. As far as cutting a billion dollars - yeah, that would be nice. Unfortunately the current administration and Congress don't seem to know what a spending cut is.

I fail to see how, even if I thought there was a "serious situation" in our country. What do you people expect him and his family to do? Stay in the White House 24/7 until all the country's problems are fixed?

First of all, freedom of religion must mean freedom for ALL religions. The same rules that prevent building a mosque someplace can also prohibit the building of churches and synagogues. Your freedom to be a Christian depends on someone else being free to be a Muslim or a Jew. I don't agree with the building of a mosque near Ground Zero, but the most un-American thing about that whole situation are the people saying it shoudln't be built just because it's a mosque.

We're still "regular ol' Americans." Society changes, and everything was always better ten years ago.

They're not happy because it looks terrible and shows hypocrisy. I'm not happy for the same reasons. It demonstrates a lack of political awareness, callousness and stupidity. Spend the money in the U.S.!

This is hilarious. Yes, Michelle Obama should have stimulated the American economy by staying at a Quality Inn down in Biloxi, MS. Her and her friends could have gone to Hooter's for crab legs instead of having lunch with the king of Spain. Get real.

The "truth" is a bunch of people bitching about her wasting "taxpayer dollars." "Taxpayer dollars" are also used to buy the bombs we drop on mud huts in Afghanistan. If people are against wasting "taxpayer dollars," then maybe they should worry about million-dollar ka-booms instead of thousands of dollars of jet fuel.

I already pointed out (in a previous post) they could have gone to someplace in the US - not sure why you think Biloxi is such a hotspot, but hey, to each their own. Vegas is having a bad couple of years, maybe they could have helped Harry Reid out and tossed some money his way. What was that about a stupid comparison?

Yes, well we all need something to do huh? The truth is, they bitched about a lot of things under Bush, and Obama bitches about Bush almost every day when he tries to sum up his many failures with the economy. The point is, they have managed to massively outspend anything Bush ever did, up the ante in our obligations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and still manage to spend larger and larger amounts of money. Maybe they need to learn how to spend their money better.

The Republicans overspent for 6 years actually - the dems took over in 2007 and that is when the shit really hit the fan so to speak. Remember when they started griping about Bush finally vetoing bills? That was when the spending was going really nuts outside of the war spending - under the Democrats after 2007. So it was only 6 years. In either case, what does this have to do with her spending all the money in Spain again?

About as much as her vacation in Spain has to do with anything; it's just a convenient story that allows anyone anti-Obama to validate their preconceived notions. If she would have gone to Vegas, the same people would say that she should have gone to an impoverished Gulf Coast town to stimulate the economy down there. If Obama was a republican, democrats would be throwing the same bitch fit right now. It's lame.

In an interview with website Big Think, Stephen Hawking warned that the long-term future of the planet is in outer space.

"It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster on planet Earth in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand, or million. The human race shouldn't have all its eggs in one basket, or on one planet," he said.

"I see great dangers for the human race," Hawking said. "There have been a number of times in the past when its survival has been a question of touch and go. The Cuban missile crisis in 1963 was one of these. The frequency of such occasions is likely to increase in the future."

"But I'm an optimist. If we can avoid disaster for the next two centuries, our species should be safe, as we spread into space," he said.

University of Michigan astrophysicist Katherine Freese told Big Think that "the nearest star [to Earth] is Proxima Centauri which is 4.2 light years away. That means that, if you were traveling at the speed of light the whole time, it would take 4.2 years to get there" -- or about 50,000 years using current rocket science.

Still, we need to act and act fast, Hawking stated. "It will be difficult enough to avoid disaster in the next hundred years, let alone the next thousand or million. Our only chance of long-term survival is not to remain inward looking on planet Earth but to spread out into space. We have made remarkable progress in the last hundred years. But if we want to continue beyond the next hundred years, our future is in space."

This is not the first time Hawking has warned of impending planetary doom. In 2006, the physicist warned that Earth was at an ever increasing risk of being wiped out. And lately, Hawking has become quite outspoken.

In April, he warned of the dangers of communicating with aliens, telling the Discovery Channel that extra-terrestrials are almost certain to exist -- and humanity should avoid contact with them at all cost.

“To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational,†he said. “The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.â€

The answer, he suggests, is that most of alien life will be the equivalent of microbes or simple animals -- the sort of life that has dominated Earth for most of its history -- and they could pose a serious threat to us.

In May Hawking said he believed humans could travel millions of years into the future and repopulate their devastated planet. If spaceships are built that can fly faster than the speed of light, a day on board would be equivalent to a year on Earth. That's because -- according to Einstein -- as objects accelerate through space, time slows down around them.

So what? Are you arguing that her trip was irrelevant, politically astute, proper because they "paid their own way" (nevermind the $375K pricetag to tax payers)? Irrespective of the fact that they paid their own way, the FL should not be taking a lavish vacation in the middle of the worst recession in 80 years, especially one in which not a single dollar was spent on U.S. soil. It's politically tone deaf and makes the first family look out of touch. Politics 101. If she wants a vacation, do something more modest and IN THE U.S.! Pretty simple really.

Also, TYIA for not responding. I can only imagine you'll waste my time with meandering nonsense that's completely off point.

I'm not arguing anything. I'm just saying that, once again, the facts have been skewed to fit the story, instead of the facts dictating the story.

Speaking of which, where are you coming up with this "375K pricetag"? You state three times in this thread that their vacation cost $375,000, but it appears you're just arbitrarily throwing that number out.

You're just a malcontent. If she would have gone to Hawaii or Vegas, you'd bitch that she should be stimulating the Gulf Coast economy. If she'd have gone to the Gulf Coast, you'd bitch that she was on vacation in an area where many are unemployed because of the oil spill, and she should have been scrubbing pelicans with toothbrushes.

Even though it's now clear that she didn't take a taxpayer-fueled romp through Spain with 40 friends in tow, she paid out of pocket, and some of her choices were made for her by the Secret Service, you're still bitching about her even going at all.

CBS NEWS;

According to CBS News, the tax dollar part of the vacation include an estimated $146,000 round-trip cost for the U.S. Air Force 757 aircraft, not counting ground time; about $95,000 in hotel costs for an estimated 70 security personnel -- Secret Service and military -- who get a $273-a-day government per diem, plus costs for the dozen or so cars in her motorcade. I'm told that three shifts of agents are needed for a trip of this magnitude.

You haven't addressed the facts...at all...once. The facts are that the FL took an extravagent vacation in the middle of a massive recession. The fact is that she didn't spend a dime in the U.S. The fact is that it did, in fact, cost taxpayers $$ to send her overseas.

Google is your friend. There are numerous sources with that number, which is an estimate based on travel and security costs. CBS News esimated that just her travel costs would be roughly $148K round trip. Here's one: http://www.global-report.co.il/hongkong/t78-michelle-obama

No, actually I'm not. I've never cared one wit about where or when a president or his family takes a vacation (although I did get annoyed when W took tons of vacation during his tenure) until now. Why now? Awareness and appearance. The WH gets an "F" for both. Once again, you're changing the subject and going ad hominem instead of addressing the point (which, incidentally, proves you're a sheep fucker...ironic? yes). This is really stupid on behalf of the first family, whom I supported.

$273 is the total per diem rate. $164 of that is for the hotel, which was already included in the 95k number. The per diem for meals and incidentals is actually $109.

Look, I'm not defending her vacation. All I'm saying is that it's ridiculous to use her vacation as an example of wasteful government spending when there are so many other examples that are more wasteful and more pointless. Again, the same people bitching about her "375K" vacation have no problem with million dollar bombs being dropped on some mud hut in Afghanistan. At best, it shows you have no perspective, and at worst, it means you're a petty asshole.

Come on folks, Have a heart for the Bamaies

The first lady made the trip because she wanted to spend time with her best friend, Chicago physician Anita Blanchard, who lost her father this summer. Blanchard (who is married to President Obama's best friend, Marty Nesbitt) planned a Spanish vacation with her daughter and invited the first lady and her daughters to come along. Michelle, who missed Blanchard's father's funeral in July, agreed and brought along her 9-year-old daughter, Sasha. The first couple's older daughter, Malia, is away at camp.

I think the point people are trying to make is, she shouldn't be having fun or acting like a normal human being. If she does decide to take a vacation, she should fly coach within the US, not spend more than poor people do on vacations, and not take any security or aides with her.

Bro, bro, bro...listen, do you know what changing the scope of an argument means? I didn't say anything about dropping $1mm bombs or "wasteful government" or whatever. That's your axe to grind with conversatives, not with the points I've raised. I cited two related things that make this trip really unpalatable--awareness (i.e., lack of awareness of how they would be perceived and lack of awareness of how many Americans can't even afford to go to water parks) and appearance (i.e., politics is about appearances and this looks bad). I just don't know how anyone can defend the Obamas on these two points. The trip was stupid and showed tone deafness. It's hard for Obama to talk about sacrifice when his wife is spending up to $2500 a night at hotels. It looks bad and that undermines his effectiveness.
