Today's military is just another job. The people serving in it reflect this change.
A number of friends of mine joined the army in the 1980s. If you were in the army then, you were trained to serve as a combat infantryman. The expectation was that you would keep yourself in adequate shape to serve that role if called upon. If you wanted your career to go anywhere your life had to be structured so that you could drop everything and deploy at a moment's notice.
It has nothing to do with admitting gays into the military, or giving women a more prominent role. Gays have always served and many were OK with it so long as the soldier wasn't flamboyant. Women can fight. This is what happens when you replace soldiers with technocrats.

Notice this faggot admits he wasn’t in the military. He became an expert on military readiness by talking to his friends who were in. Someone mentioned Cheney and they are part right. Cheney really fucked us over by canceling a lot of future programs and projects. The M4 needs a replacement and there isn’t quite one on the horizon. The Bradley APC and the Abrams tanks are showing their age. AAMs like the Sidewinder and AMRAAM are approaching obsolescence while our adversaries are catching up to us in regrade to missile technology.
We’re seriously lagging behind them in development of hypersonic weapons, direct energy weapons and space weapons.
The military has also squandered a lot of good will by engaging in fruitless wars in the Middle East. No one wants to serve anymore and as a consequence, the military finds itself having to relax its standards enough to allow for people who ordinarily wouldn’t be able to serve to actually serve.
