The Good Ol' Days
Date: July 19, 2010 10:53AM

I've made a point of remembering just how shitty some of those "Good Ol' Days" were so that I don't become too misty eyed when I think back. What say you?

I don't believe the eras should classify as "The Good ole Days".
They should be more related to ones own lifetime and the period you had the best personal experiences.

In my case, it was the late 80s/early 90s when I was racing motocross. I met so many great friends and had a shitload of fun. At the same time, I was playing in a rock n roll band and had an awesome girlfriend. I feel almost guilty for having such a great time.

I had good times in the late 80s and early 90s, as well. But I don't buy into the belief that what I did 20 years ago is somehow better than my life today. I am at a point in my life where so many people I know bitch and moan about how great life was back "in the day," and I'm like, "get over it." Life is what you make it.

The Good Ol' Days were in the late 90s when I could go into a 7-11 and get an Orbitz drink. Life has not been worth living since it was discontinued.

Man I miss Orbitz.

Every decade has its own mystique, its own pros and cons, drawbacks, etc. I think people equate the "Good Ol' Days" to when they were young and enjoyed life.

Another drink that I liked from the 90s was a Pepsi Clear

True. But my point is I don't want to be one of those people who get so sentimental about the "good ol' days" that they spend their time living in the past. I am seeing that more and more from friends and associates as they get older. It's a bad way to go through life, IMO.

And I also enjoyed from the 90s the drink Crystal Pepsi.

I think it depends on who or why you're reminiscing. When I'm with friends from a certain time period that I haven't seen in a long time, I tend to think those were good ole days. In 10 years, I'll probably look back at today as being good times as well.

It doesn't mean that you don't enjoy your current life. It just means there were certain times of our lives when we were slightly different and did different things. I think it's okay to look back fondly on those times. It's certainly better than not having them at all.

People, especially as they get very old, see the world changing around them, they maintain a sense of control over their lives by living in the past, as WTL said.

I think we mainly remember what we want to remember. Who wants to remember the times some people made fun of you? Who wants to remember having nothing to do on a Saturday night? Nobody. You want to remember the hot chicks you scored with, hanging out with friends, doing goofy things, winning something. That's the stuff you remember, so the your "good old days" past is really a glossy, feel-good, biased look back at life.

Yeah, that's true and also understandable. When you get into the twilight of your life and you know you're gonna die soon, those younger, more energetic days are bound to look better.

We tend to prefer the music, politics, TV and other things of our own generation over the current one because that's when we had all our fun and energy.

I really make an effort at understanding those things today, but even at my young age, I find much of it boring. For example, pop music today is appalling to me. That's not to say that all music is (there are some new artists that I really like), but the majority is auto-tuned and pre-packaged by producers and then simply insert a singer and auto-tuned more.

I also despise reality TV and movies today are mostly remakes and based on comic books I read in 3rd grade. However, I do like todays special FX and HD. I also love all the new channels based around science, technology and information.

I'm not really into politics, so I don't favor any particular era.

My point is, it's understandable to prefer things from your youth, as long as there are things you can still appreciate today.

wow....I guess I've never been very happy at all, because I don't look back favorably at much of anything. It all sucks. As much today as it did 20+ years ago. Damn it....I think I missed what were supposed to be the best years of my life.

.....I miss Super Nintendo, I guess.....

My Dad always use to reminisce about "the good old days" and when life was simpler.

He also was the type who romanticized life in North America before the Europeans arrived and how most Indian tribes peacefully coexisted among themselves. Which is fine but not necessarily fact.

Maternal death rates during childbirth for instance ran near 40% at times during the 1800's and were still as high as 1 in 100 in the early 1900's. Cancer treatment as late as the mid 70's looks like Civil War medicine compared to what we have available now.

Even with all the problems were facing today I wouldn't want to go back too far.

Would you want to go back to 1999, knowing that 9/11 was two years away? (And not being able to do anything to prevent it)

But if you went back to 1999 and knew it was going to happen in two years, you could alert the FBI and CIA and have them arrest the devil with the cold, dead eyes, Mohommad Atta, at Dave & Busters.

Time travel versus wishing for the good old days or some aspect of them = 2 different issues.

So are we talking about going back to being younger, and reliving a past time? Would you have knowledge of your 'future' you came from, thus having some ability to say, win the lottery, invest in growth stocks, or attempt to prevent some action. Or would it just be going back to that time as a younger you with no memory of the future? Or, are we just talking about lamenting that we can't live in the past? :)

If you can’t model the past, where you know the answer pretty well, how can you model the future? - William Happer Cyrus Fogg Brackett Professor of Physics Princeton University

That being the case you would just have to travel back to last Saturday night 5 minutes before the Power Ball Drawing.
