That was a bunch of tank boys "off the reservation". The fact that they decided to shoot up the guys car before they run it over make it clear they are not acting in the name of US Policy or their standing orders. They just did the suicide bombers recruiting job for them. By the time this story gets told over and over in Iraq they will have the civilians believing the Army put kids in the car before they crushed it. One step forward fifty back on this piece of work.

You have to be crazy to think this little experiment helped improve relations with the locals. All it will do is inflame them and create a ready list of more suicide bombers.Standing there shooting handguns into a parked car. What did that accomplish?
No one is excusing the terrorists but crushing a guys only means of support doesnt win too many allies.
This was a great propaganda tool for the terrorists.

We went into their country and demolished the infrastructure. He probably needed wood to make fire and cook food, or boil water so it's safe to drink, or to patch a bombed-out window. Where were they stealing it from, anyway? Was it abandoned? It looked like scrap.

So what is gained by resorting to their tactics. They steal some wood to keep warm and we crush the guys car? If you dont understand propaganda you should. It is the most deadly weapon in any war. Absent totally wiping out a population you cannot gain support by heavy handed tactics.
U S history can teach you that. The British used Iroquois Indians to supplement their troops in the American Revolution. When the Indians started ravaging the American settlers the press had a field day showing the British in such an unfavorable light. It drove thousands of settlers who were sitting on the sidelines into the Continential Army. Troops that never would have been had not the British resorted to harsh treatment of the population.
I am all for the defense of our troops and getting the job done but I just dont see it here.
