Actually it helped a lot in getting the teacher freed that named the teddy bear Mohammed in Saudi Arabia. It really embarrassed them and made them look like idiots.
I don't think the people making these laws don't actually agree with them. It's just another measure of controlling the population through fear (of the supernatural). As we've seen here in this country, it's pretty fucking effective.
There's a good chance that this petition will do nothing, but many people don't know or believe that this shit still goes on. Bringing these types of things to the fore might be a good way to get the news out.
The internet is available in some of those shitholes and it's the only way of getting the inhabitants to question their philosophy. Bombing them into the stone age won't work if they're still in it.

Yeah speed cameras are a violation of our civil liberties, if you believe in such, and go against our constituional right to be free of undue governmental persecution and constraints.
As far as smoking goes, who cares ASSHOLE. I'm no smoker but if you don't like the smoke, DRIVE OFF, MOVE, or stop patronizing what ever filthy bar whore watering whole you prefer most.

Granted, the guy in the video is kinda goofy and inarticulate, but the point isn't about how life is unfair. It's about basic human rights. We certainly aren't perfect here in this country and we still execute people, but not by burying women up to their shoulders and throwing rocks at them till their dead, especially for something like adultery. Iran has decided NOT to stone the woman. Unfortunately, the execution will still take place in another form, probably hanging.
This may not seem like any sort of victory, but it's a step in the right direction towards human rights in Iran and other goatfuck countries.
All the attention brought forth by celebrities and petitions, embarrassed the government and made them look like fools. Guilt and shame is the only way to bring these people into the 21st century.
