An Ethical Question
Posted by: MrMephisto ()

If you're engaged in a competition (sports, video games, board games, whatever) and you know the other person is cheating, is it OK for you to cheat in the exact same way?

I say "yes," because you're not really cheating at that point. You're just making the competition equal again.

Be the better sport and beat him normally. That way you have the satisfaction of having beaten a dirtbag who couldn't even play fair.

If you're not cheating, you're not trying.

Yes, it's fine. Just make sure you aren't the one that gets caught cheating!

Once someone cheats the game is over. Kids as young as two or three can be taught that.

Oh, and I think parents that LET their little kids win.....are stupid.

two wrongs make a right? nay i say, NAY!

informal competition, i would ask, "would you please stop cheating?" if they deny it or refuse, then quit the game.

in a friendly game (with people you know so it doesnt get out of hand, ending up with people pissed off), i would say, "quit cheatin', cheater!" smiling of course. if they dont, then say, "oh, we're playing that way are we?" and then cheat in plain sight and their objections be dammed (with sarcasm) unless they agree to follow the rules. that way the rules are either restored or augmented.

i dont like competition unless it's fun. if it's not fun, it's just work.

Technically, I say it's OK since you're leveling the playing field (again). But my own moral compass makes me want to be them without cheating especially when it comes to sports. With that being said, when my niece and nephews were much younger (they're in their 20's now and my sister in law's kids), they cheated all the time, every time, at everything. Then when they'd win they'd fucking gloat, brag and whatnot. So, I cheated in order to win and shut them the fuck up and since I was an adult, I was much better at cheating then they were. Just one more reason that I really hate that portion of my extended family.

But two wrongs don't make a right. I agree with Gravis - if it's friendly, call them out and then just do it in their face.

Here's what prompted this question:

I have a Scrabble-type game on my iPhone that lets me play with random people. I know who's cheating and who's not cheating by the words they play and the way they play them.

I have a pretty broad vocabulary, and am pretty good at word games. I understand that there's a lot of words I probably don't know. But when someone is pulling an obscure, 6-letter word with an 'X' and a 'Z' in it, and sandwiching it between two other words to get a triple word score... that's fucking cheating.

I also know for a fact how easy it is to cheat at this game. When you search for it in the app store, the first result is the game itself. The second result is a free app that makes words out of your available letters and which letters you're trying to cross.

I don't use the the cheat app unless there's a series of bullshit words pulled out of nowhere and I'm getting trounced 300 to 95. Don't even try and tell me that "SxyGurl28," "RedneckJoe," and "MissKitty42" are linguistic geniuses.

Without looking these words up, what the fuck is:

1. Staling
2. Heth
3. Qis
4. Agee
5. Xis

Yeah, that's what I thought.

MrMephisto,
yeah, that's bullshit. just quit and find someone else. there is no need to interact with cheaters like that.

Yeah, just play with yourself and you can monitor everything that happens.

I just cheat right back, and expand my vocabulary at the same time. If we're both using the same tool, it's an even competition.

1. Staling - the act of something getting stale.
2. Heth - 8th letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and the Hebrew "H" sound
3. Qis - some sort of chinese energy
4. Agee - british adjective for "askew"
5. Xis - Greek alphabet letter

Agee: A bicycle store in Richmond, VA.

My daughter is always complaining of Scrabble game cheaters. She stopped playing one game (Literati..?) since, according to her, everyone was cheating.

Earlier, I asked her what she did when she was certain someone was cheating. Her response was the same as Mr. Mephisto's... I cheat right back. And, she added... I cheat back better!

kids will lose interest pretty fast if a parent keeps crushing them at a game that was designed to challenge a youngster. most games are made for certain age groups. go pick on someone your own size.
