The existing IRS reporting requirements are adequate to insure reasonable tax compliance by W-2 employees. They are woefully inadequate when it comes to self employed gig workers and small businessmen. In times past these were the type of people usually targeted by IRS audits. In those audits taxpayers would be required to produce bank statements so that the IRS could match up cash flow with claimed receipts. When Republicans gutted the IRS the ability to have humans perform this function was lost. The Biden administration is looking for a computerized way to achieve the same function.

The problem with the Biden administration proposal is not that they are asking banks to report information. Banks already report information to the Treasury, including a certain amount of information they are not legally required to report. The problem is this reporting requirement with a $600 threshold is likely to produce large amounts of utterly useless information.

The IRS already has access to your banking account. You give them the right when you file taxes and include the account on the form.
