a) you need a graphics card with a second video output or a second video card. i recommend a new video card with two outputs
b) if you are using CRTs, dump them because they use a TON of power. seriously, they increase the electric bill significantly. a nice flat panel or two will pay for itself in under a year.
c) sorry bro, the splitter is not what you need.

if you would like additional help from me, just PM me.

Yeah. a splitter didn't do it. It just cloned the image onto the other screen and there was no recogntion whatsoever by the PC. No CRTs here, fortunately.

Next step is a graphics card with two ports, I think the one I have now is integrated, so I've got figure that shit out. :(

I don't have any experience with these as I have multiple outputs on even my years-old backup PC, but they may be easier than adding a video card if you don't know much about what you are doing:

Depending on the vendor, the on-board graphic port will still function if you add in a graphics card. I believe HP supports this, but I think for some reason Dell went away from it. Make sure when you put a card in, that you check the bios and tell it to boot from "PCI/PCIe/..." whatever the card slot is first. Some bios will figure this out automatically, but most times that is not the case.

This is another move I was looking into. I've found them for about $35 on Ebay. I'm not sure yet if the graphics card will handle it though my OS (windows 7) has the option to recognize 2 monitors.

If heard if it is an integrated card it must be shutoff at the BIOS . If I can find a usb to vga adaptor, I think we're going to try this first, because everything else sounds like a hassle.

What does it have to do with the graphics card already in there? These are basically external graphics cards that hook up via USB. Your current graphics card stays where it is, and Windows 7 sees this other video hardware and uses it for an additional monitor.

Quad-SLI with GTX480s. Better yet, Matrox sells some crap in which you can do this with like 10 monitors.

It depends on the vendor. Using a USB to VGA is BAD IDEA. Slow, and will probably cause more problem then it is worth. You can get an inexpensive NVIDIA graphics card with dual outputs all over the place. AGP cards with 2 outputs as cheap as $7.99, or $19.99 - Diamond PCIe cards for $20.99, etc.

Just depends on what is available on the motherboard. It is very easy to do. Don't do the USB though unless it is a last resort.

I think my move is going to be to get one of these USB to VGA adaptors. My graphics card is integrated and I'll have to fuck with the BIOS which is something I've never done. I may consider a new card of the adaptor gives me problems.

WingNut - seriously - just get the card. The USB adapter will likely be the worst choice, and then you will still end up spending money and time to do it the other way.

i'm trying to find one that I can return if I don't like it.

Do you know the steps for disabling the other card at the BIOS?

Depends on the BIOS - usually it is under the advanced settings, or peripheral devices. And it can be something like "Initialize Video Device First" with options like integrated, PCI, AGP, etc. In most cases, if it is going to need to be disabled, in the newer BIOS, it will do it automatically. The times it makes a difference is when it leaves the integrated video on, and it wants you to prioritize the device that should be the primary video device.

It usually is not hard though.

a "nice" flat panel would cost around 200 bucks so unless your CRT is using $20 of electricity a month its gonna take quite a while to "pay for itself"

a crt averages 80 watts. an lcd averages 25 watts

a difference of 55 watts or $2 a month if the monitors are on 24/7.

Will an HDMI output port in the CPU, get the job done?

Be sure to let us know how it goes, this sounds like a cool set-up.

I mostly use my laptop, so I have a built-in HDMI port and I hooked it up to the Vizio once. It was amazing how well it worked, but it's all built into the laptop. I'm guessing that you have a tower?

I have an "Old" laptop which died only a year after I bought it, and while the CPU and Biometric Scanner still work, the monitor is completely dead. It doesn't have an HDMI port, but I'm hoping that I can still use my Vizio as a monitor for it (With the VGA 15 pin connector), so I can finally retrieve my three + year old files. I tried it once on a regular CPU monitor, but that didn't do jack.

Video playback is usually where the USB adapters fall short, so watch your quality smut on the monitor driven by the video card.

I thought of that already. The splitter is going onto the VGA port and the VGA cable through the wall to my back BR flat screen. I'm going to have to experiment to see what works best, but I think I'll be using the 19" for the videos (in the office) and the 17 for emails, databases, folders etc.

Yeah, I was looking at some of those USB to VGA adapters today. Another important point is available RAM in your PC. Those devices don't appear to have their own memory, and instead rely on the memory of your PC to manage the processed the video for them. For most Windows installations now you would want at least 1GB of RAM in the machine to function normally, and up to 4GB (assuming 32 bit Windows). You would want between 1GB-2GB assuming you have no other major programs running on your PC regularly to support the USB to VGA device. The more RAM the better and 1GB is really below minimum in most cases.

you can plug a comp into any modern lcd or plazma tv.

a 50 inch screen is the size of 4 regular monitors.

you could leave as many windows open as you wanted.

Just as a side note - you did see in the microcenter link I had - you could get a cheap PCIe card to $25 or less - if it was AGP even lower. They had a sale on - I went over and got some PCI cards (for machines with embedded graphics that have no PCIe slot) for $27 I think it was. The AGP ones were $35 I believe. They are nvidia 8400 series (which isn't bad for most basic apps and many games even today) and easily run two monitors with 512MB RAM on-board. So if you find you want to see if it could be better - that would be the way to go.

I really wanted to do the new graphics card, but I was unsure aboutshuttong it off at startup or the bios. I'm a little disappointed my system didn't come with an extra graphics port of some form. But it's 2 years old.

I'm pretty happy with what I have now, two screens make sthings a lot easier. Now I am going to take this stupid splitter I got and run VGA through the wall into my back BR, split the picture from the VGA port and do Netflix and all that from my pc.

those are modern monitors which makes a big difference. if it's on the shitty end of the spectrum, it will cost a shitload per year.

these are new models of LCD. just think about what the old CRT ones are like: http://reviews.cnet.com/green-tech/monitor-comparison-chart/?tag=contentBody;nextPage
