Bottom line, rich Southern plantation owners who bank rolled Southern polictians needed slaves to pick cotton and other crops. The rich Southern plantation owners weren't going to give up free labor and go broke without a fight. The economy of the South would of fallen apart. The Northern economy didn't need slave labor because it was industrial.

I have friends that live in Richmond. Its definitely Ghetto. However, the people there are WAY FRIENDLIER than anyone in my nova upper middle class neighborhood. And its not a bad place to live (as long as you arent raising kids there). Yeah there are shootings and robberies, you need to be wise on where its okay to walk etc. 99% of homicides are committed drug dealers, so if your not a drug dealer your probably straight.

I guess this forum has some lost energy. I live in Richmond--and though I appreciate the architecture, the natural environment, parks, and Richmond's progression in becoming an up-and-coming city with more restaurants, more businesses, gentrification (whether or not that's good or bad), etc., the thing I dislike most about this city and surrounding areas are the Conservative Representatives in Congress that we have. There are a lot of Dems in Richmond & other political affiliations, but to the rest of the nation we must seem like a bunch of backwards retards. Thank you Eric Cantor.

I also dislike the Confederacy statues, though epic and apart of the cities long, toilsome story. I feel like I am apart of some false history (mother being English, father from Ohio). There are aspects of the South I really enjoy however--such as country, folk music etc. I was born in Pensacola, so maybe I should just keep wallowing in my white trashness.

I think the confederate statues are absolutely beautiful! They are part of a wonderful history. Makes Richmond unique and not the bland-vanilla milkshake that is NOVA and fairfax county.

Richmond is NOT dirty. There are parts that are run down, but overall the city is gorgeous!. Especially the fan and Monument Ave and lower Church Hill areas. Downtown has some pretty nice buildings- and the Berkley hotel is great . Shockoe slip is well kept up. Carytown is hip and happening. Richmond has tons more flavor than NOVA could ever hope to have.

Baltibore is trash!

I think I'd rather be homeless in Newark, NJ or downtown Detroit than live in Richmond.

Richmond is a beautiful city, much like Charleston and Savannah. It does have its bad parts, but so does Paris, France!

It has charm and character. If you want to live in a vanilla milkshake of a Southern city move to Charlotte or Nashville or Atlanta or the DC suburbs. It may look cleaner, but it has no flavor.

Charlotte is even more boring than "NOVA". Yuck. Richmond has culture and personality. I love it!

Been in richmond for almost four years now, on/off student at VCU as well. Richmond is rife with trash like art students, brotards, crust-fund punks and racist members of the plentiful surrounding ghettos. Couldn't give a fuck about the southern symbolism and pride and don't see it as anything other than an interesting footnote in a long, boring history. The local bar scene is among the most whack I've seen, with most of the bars on a good drinking night filled to capacity to the point where trying to order a drink or make conversation with strangers is impossible. Also, it seems like richmond is real short on single ladies, or they're just not in the bars, as I mostly find couples and bros. I've had great times in richmond but they've rarely had anything to do with the burgeoning social venues in this city. Also, the local music here is awful, dominated mostly by shitty punk bands and even shittier metal bands. Watching a video of the rva band Black Girls, for a taste of something not metal or punk, is painful and I'm pretty sure they got together on a dare. All in all, can't wait for this city to burn to the ground.

Yeah of all places to put the water treatment sewage plant, they decide right on the interstate as you enter their ugly ghetto city is the logical place eh? I have lived in England, San Francisco, Kansas City, & Atlanta and traveled all around the world. Unfortunately right now I'm subjected to having to live here in this dump of a city RVA, the only people that seem to jump to the defense of this city are the ones that haven't had to pleasure of living elsewhere. This city is shit, the roads are horrible, its one giant black ashtray, there are more butts here than a Sir Mix-a-lot video. The people are under educated wannabe gangsters, or hillbillies. The houses are old, tattered, overgrown weeded shacks compared to real estate in other states. Boasting that ANY county in Metro RVA has better schools than the other isn't saying much considering in comparison to other states or other countries VA is pathetic. There is virtually no public transportation save for a bus or two right near the colleges, you cannot even internationally fly to or from this tiny shoe-box of an airport, you have to drive all the way to Dulles in DC because they know if it were that easy more people would LEAVE. The social economic state of RVA is still reminiscent of the civil war.The African Americans here have resigned themselves to only aspire to become basketball players or rappers IF they can even graduate high school at all. The whites, well their goals in life are weekend hunts and a four wheeler. Most have never been anywhere else than the mucky sewage run off of a river called the James, or VA beach for holiday. Just once I would like to have a conversation somewhere in RVA without the phrases " He be, she be, they is, or lemee axe you a question." I have been more boarded windows and abandoned houses here than after Katrina in LA and we haven't even had a hurricane. Well unless you count our typhoon of ghetto.I hate this place with a loathing I have never known before. The people are fat, ignorant, ill mannered, dirty, ugly, unrefined,illiterate,smoking,welfare seeking,rude idiots. The saddest thing of all......is that VA was one of the first states and hasn't progressed much since. Truly RVA is the eyesore and embarrassment of the commonwealth. Richmond has some sore spots, but I disagree with all the rest you said. The architecture here is stunning! As far as fat ugly people? Nope. Maybe Fairfax County, but Richmond has quite a lot of young attractive people in the arts and a strong creative class. People that value going to art galleries and museumes rather than a Dave Matthews concert or a Redskins football game in thier SUVs.... After a stop at TGIFriday's. Oh, maybe Richmond is far from perfect, but its a lovely city. Its quaint. And its still Southern.. I think NOVA is just pea green with evny. Richmond is everything NOVA tries hard to be but without trying. Its gracious, cosmopolitan, and its interesting.

We have a Walmart, Piggly Wiggly, many churches, many other stores & Many Fast Food Restaurants! yes we have southern accents. But they don't place Walmarts & Piggly Wiggly's in random places.
