Good Posting Etiquette with MrMephisto & Friends

Today's lesson is to cover the basics of posting anonymously. Please refer to the image below.

1. This is the name field. It should not be confused with the subject line (that's number 3, below). The name should be a short, one- or two-word identifier than can help other users discern who they're speaking with. If you absolutely cannot think of a name, just use the spam prevention code as your name (number 5, below).

Right: "Jim Dumbname"

Wrong: "A really concerned citizen who worries about the future of our schools and the effect of drugs on our children"

2. Your email address can be entered in this field if you want to. It's strictly optional, and you don't have to use your real email address. In fact, some users think it's fun to use emails like "hardcock@aol.com" or "assrimmer@aol.com." Let your imagination run wild!

3. This is the subject line. Put a couple words or a short sentence here to give people an idea of what your topic is about.

Good: "Murder in Fairfax"

Bad: "Stabby McGee stabbed in Herndon last night anybody got any info on this murder? I heard the police were looking for a mexican, or maybe a black person, but I'm not sure."

4. Click this to attach a picture to your message. Make sure you CROP YOUR FUCKING PICTURE, and that your picture is not gay porn. Please note that this applies to registered users, as well. I'm looking at you, Vince.

5. The spam prevention code must be entered before your post will go through. It also doubles as a name, if you're unoriginal and/or worried about fucking it up.

That's all for now, kids! Next topic: "Caps lock: When is it appropriate?"

Posters that try emulating the § guy with special character screen names and end up with something retarded like "& # 1168" in the screen name line.

People that like keeping their Hate-0-Meter down, so they +1 and support other posters' arguments under a registered name, and then log off so they can write "gay, FAIL, you're retarded, etc."

Posters that support themselves in discussions and arguments by giving the appearance of multiple anonymous users agreeing with him or herself, then claim PWNAGE because more "people" agreed with them.

Anonymous people that pop up to take a counterpoint to information given, yet have no clue what they are talking about. They argue just to argue.

Don't forget "Calling someone who disagrees with your political view a delusional troll, does it really invalidate their argument?"

In certain circumstances, yes.

Bad: Referencing another poster in your signature line with a personal attack.

Example: Anything in Vince(1)'s sig line since the new year.

Blessed are the murderous.

One of the many reasons the "Brown Eye Blind" thread was so funny to me was because of the white canvas surrounding the image. You can resize that, even in MS Paint. That way, your amazingly clever MS Paint image won't be ruined by unnecessary white space.

We're back, boys and girls! Today's lesson is:

"Using the *NSFW* Tag Because You're Not A Fucking Asshole"

The internet is everywhere, my friends. It's in your house, it's in your school, it's in your church, it's even on your phone! However, the internet can also appear in the places people work.

"NSFW" is an acronym for "Not Safe For Work." Many places of business typically frown upon the viewing of violent/graphic/pornographic/erotic/drug-related/disturbing images. While these images can add much-needed hilarity to an otherwise dull thread, or even be relevant to the current conversation, that doesn't change the fact that they're considered taboo in the work place.

Using the "NSFW" tag shows respect and courtesy to your fellow internet clansman. The best place to apply it is in the subject line of the thread; that way people at work know to avoid reading your thread while using their school/business/library computer.

But let's say you didn't start the thread. The best practice is to not post violent/graphic/pornographic/erotic/drug-related/disturbing images in a thread that does not have the "NSFW" tag in the subject line. If you absolutely must, then write "NSFW" at the top of your response, then use several returns to put a blank space that must be scrolled through to reach the scandalous content. Like so:

*NSFW*

[picture of a penis]

See? Now, you're not being a fucking asshole.

"But MrMephisto, how do I know when to use the 'NSFW' tag?" It's really quite simple. Just ask yourself how the following people would feel about looking at whatever you're about to post in front of:

1. Your Mother
2. A Minister
3. Your Principal
4. Your Teacher
5. Your Spouse
6. Your Grandmother
7. A Cop
8. A Young Child
9. Your Boss

If you wouldn't feel comfortable having them looking at it, then DON'T POST IT WITHOUT THE NSFW TAG. If you do, then you're a fucking asshole.

Until next time, keep enjoying them internets!

<3,

MrMephisto

Another acceptable way to implement the NSFW tag would be to post a link to the unsafe image with an NSFW disclaimer near it.

Cheers!

And happy netting...

P.S. I almost forgot, children... Remember to close everything that you open...
This goes for HTML tags, bar tabs, and refrigerator doors...

I disagree with NSFW. If your at work, do fucking work. If some titties pop up on your screen, and the boss happens to see, oh well you got caught. Wait till you get home to get your FFXU fix. Instead of NSFW, how about a different tag. Like rated r.

This site would be dead from 7 AM to at least 6 PM if people followed your logic.

Don't be angry because you have to stand behind a cash register at Walmart for eight hours a day and get a quick, 30 minute lunch break.
