Here’s the Fenwick Island lighthouse in the 1870s

It’s ocean front.

Now it’s 8 blocks back from the beach.

The ocean has retreated since the 1800s due to global cooling.

You do know every 10 years or so Delaware beaches are replenished. The work involves dredging sand from approved borrow areas. The sand is pumped through a series of pipes onto the beaches. The sand in then graded into a dune and burm template designed to reduce potential storm damages to the beaches, infrastructure, businesses and homes.

That started in the 80s. The lighthouse was 8 blocks from the beach then as well. They only replenish the beach to keep any movement from occuring which is a natural barrier island process. The water level in the canals (sea level) has not changed in 50 years.

In the 30s hurricanes were so strong they ripped open the OC inlet. There hasn’t been a hurricane in decades. And none nearly as violent in Rohobeth. I’ve been down at the same house for decades and the sea level in the canal is virtually unchanged. Floods were devastating 100 years ago now they are nothing.
