It’s been a long, strange trip for Oklahoma’s $2.6 million shipment of hydroxychloroquine, bought a year ago as a once-promising treatment for COVID-19.

The 1.2 million doses of the drug normally used to treat lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and prevent malaria were shipped from a California distributor to a small pharmacy in Pryor, with the state paying for the hydroxychloroquine from money borrowed from fees generated by medical marijuana licenses.

The hydroxychloroquine now sits in a warehouse at an undisclosed location, with the Oklahoma State Department of Health reluctant to answer questions about what it will do with the drug or why it went to Pryor. Records obtained by Oklahoma Watch show the drug has an expiration date in December. Meanwhile, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis patients had to navigate a temporary shortage related to a spike in demand related to the drug’s supposed COVID-19 usage.

Nobody with any brains thinks hydroxychloroquine works for Covid. It's failed almost every study. It's a classic case of something that gets heavily promoted and then doesn't pan out. The careful studies show no effect. The sloppy studies show a small effect. That's typical in science.

This, however, is not because government is letting up. Especially on a federal level, there really never was a serious attempt to enforce mitigation by masks, social distancing, etc. The result is a half million dead. But we have beaten the virus back, some, and with the vaccines we should be able to put this behind us.

Cases, however, are going up. But the problem is not government letting up, cause it never cracked down in the first place. It is the American people. We are simply not willing to sacrifice for the common good sufficiently to beat this thing. A couple more months, with (Trump's?) vaccine, and we would have been in pretty prime shape.But we are tired of mitigation. We're bored, and mitigation is hard. So we are easing up, individually. And virus rates are therefore rising.

The assholes who won't mask, or bitch about the vaccine, are only a minor problem. To coin a phrase, they are what they are, and are probably not reachable in any event. It is the rest of us are the real problem. Fucking snowflakes, we are.

I don't like stopping at stop lights much, either. It slows you down, and there may an opening for you to go, but you might get a ticket if you run it, and there may just be idiot running 80mph coming at you from just over that hill. So you stop.
