im trying to lose weight any suggesitons ?

Hi,

well I need to lose at leat 50 lbs the Dr. says. But I have been on a diet for the past year and have only lost 15 lbs.

I am a man about 5'11 and I currently eat about 1800-2000 cal. a day.

What could I be doing wrong?

Here's a sample menu :

Breakfast (I usually skip breakfast) but if I eat breakfast (Around 10 AM):

-Zone Bar
-1 bow of cereal
-1 yougurt piece of fruit

Dinner: (Around 1 PM)
-Tuna Fish Sandwich on whole wheat bread
-1 cp of blue corn chips
-1 pickle

Snack: (Around 4 pm) zone bar or yougurt

Supper: (Around 7 pm)
-2 pc of baked or grilled chicken
1 bowl of salad with light Italian dressing

Snack:
-1 bowl of cereal or 1 yougurt

I also walk at least 1/2 hour everyday for 5x a week. I sometimes ride a bike.

What can I do to lose weight faster?

What can I do to lose weight faster?

Burn more calories than you are consuming. I.E. eat less and exercise more. Do something more strenuous than walking, and eat less than 1500 calories a day.

I lost 40 pounds on Atkins (210 down to 170). But if you do that you should buy the book and read it before you start so you know the science behind why it works, as well as why "cheating" doesn't fool your body at all.

Are you sure its safe for a grown man almost 6 ft tall to be on a 1500 cal a day diet? My nutritionist told me it would be dangerous to go below 1600 even.

She recommended 1800-2000 cal. She said it will be slow but it will last that way.

First, why are you still here?

Second, I bet that you are eating more calories than you think. Someone that was really counting calories would not say "1 bowl of cereal." They'd say something like "1 cup of Kashi Strawberry Fields cereal and 1/2 cup 1% milk." Do you know how many hundreds of calories can be in a "bowl of cereal"? You need to measure everything!

Second, your caloric intake should be based on your weight not your height. As you lose weight, you eat less. Unless you weight more than 300 pounds, a 1500 cal a day diet should be fine. But you may want to make 1500 calories your target and allow yourself an extra 100-200 calories a few times a week.

Last, write everything down. If you can't get the nutritional information off of the product, use sites like calorieking.com to find it.

And I'd say that since you are unemployed, you can walk for more than 1/2 an hour a day.

Well, I weigh 240 lbs. To maintain that weight, Id have to eat 2400 cal a day- which I'm sure not doing.

But anyways, I'll try 1500 cal. a day and see if that makes any difference.

I dont measure stuff. I guess I'll have to start doing that.

Get involved in some type of sports activity; a hiking or biking club, coed leagues(soccer is the best). Find somebody else to workout with you. Walking is good but does little if you are walking slow, speed up your walk and time yourself. Try taking seconds off your walk each day(the same distance.)

Eat fresh foods, such as veggies. go for quality not quantity. Don't eat any sugar during the week. Cut bread out of your diet.

FYI - Tuna good, mayo not good.

Drinking alot of water always helps too. It will make you feel fuller if you drink a pint of water before meals, or during times when you are hungry for a snack. I've also found that spicing up your food helps if you're trying to eat less. For some reason, it makes you feel fuller. Buy some fresh crushed red pepper flakes, and use them on everything possible. I find myself eating less, and enjoying it more, when I amp it up with red pepper flakes.

holy crap. this is a pet peeve of mine, people who dont know how easy it is to loose weight. seriously, it's not a secret. get off your ass and exercise for an hour or two every day. exercising for <30 mins will not help you loose weight. be sure to drink both water and something with sodium or you will die like a retarded cop from DC. i suggest you drink gatorade or powerade. you can alter your diet but generally this will ramp up your metabolic rate so your body consumes fat, what you are looking to loose. dont be surprised if you dont loose weight immediately because chances are you are building muscle and burning fat at the same time which will make you thinner but you weight will not drop dramatically. fat burning drugs will help you loose weight at the cost of years on your life, they burn up your kidneys. all the diets you hear about are either not healthy or just going to make you hungry.

bottom line: exercise. it's that fucking easy.

Hi Robert,

Your diet seems fine. But you need to exercise more. The key to losing weight is to get your heart beating fast for at least 35 minutes. Walking is good to begin with byt you need to up the pace and the time. If you are not used to exercise, try intervals. Like five min of fast walking then two min. of jogging then back to walking etc. I se a Polar heart monitor and work in my fat burning zone according to the monitor.

If you can afford it, hire a trainer because working correctly with weights can help you build muscle. Or join a gym and use the info from the helpers there. I work at a gym and we have lots of people who are overweight.
Third, try not to drink juice and stuff like Gatorade. Those drinks have lots of sugar. Instead drink water as much as you can.

Most family doctors can help with weight control and give you menu guidelines. Or you can go on the internet and read stuff like Body For Life or extrapounds.com.

Excuse me, but not all of us can just drop weight when we want to. Some people do all the recommended things and still can't lose much weight, or can't lose it at all. Now, genetically, no one in my family is fat, but Ive been overweight since i was about 12 years old. I lost 70 plus pounds a few times before with pills but the weight returned within less than 2 years.

This is really the first time I have tried losing weight just lifestyle changes.

I started a diet around the first. The last time I weighed myself was over spring break. I didn't like what the scale told me. Took me this long to get motivated. But I am motivated.

I drink water. All day. Nothing else. I eat fruit and veggies all day. I eat peanuts (no salt), about a serving. I eat broiled and grilled chicken and fish. I eat a lot, but it is all good stuff. And I drink V-8. A 12 ounce can a day. I feel better, I look better, and I am happier. I speed walk. Couldn't tell you how much. Probably about 4 miles a day, spaced out. I walk the most at night. Gives me peace.

I don't know how much I have lost, but I know it is 4 inches off my waist. None of my clothes fit me anymore. My feet hurt less, my back hurts less, knees, hips, etc. And my hair is softer and shinier. And I am not as tired.

And I don't weigh myself. I know I need to, but I know also that I have lost weight. I also know that I have tightened up muscle. I don't want to get discouraged if I haven't lost what I hope I have just because of muscle weighing more. I figure, as long as my clothes keep getting bigger on me, that's all I need to know. It works for me and I am having a blast.

Here's what a doctor-ordered physical therapist wrote up for me:

Treadmill - 45 minutes/day, 5 days/week

Weights - 3 times / week

Conditioning - sit-ups/push-ups - 3 times / week

Those are the actual notes she wrote down but, in fact, the various TYPES of exercises is what she stressed - aerobics, weight, conditioning.

So any aerobic substitute for treadmill is fine.

I combine aerobic with conditioning and essentially do it daily. I also have a "universal gym" weight machine so can use that in-between or before/after; I am for sure NOT trying to GAIN bulk so have no problem using lighter weights a LOT rather than heavier weights 3 times per week.

Near and dear to my heart (!) is an OLD exercise recording that I exercised to about...50...years ago - The Chicken Fat Song! It lasts about 6 minutes with a variety of exercises, so 10 repeats (10 sets?) makes for an hour+ of almost-constant aerobic exercise.



One of the biggest obstacles to exercising is...getting to it! So get to it!
