CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Planning is overrated, author John Grisham told nearly 6,000 University of Virginia students Sunday as he offered a commencement speech he hoped would depart from the norm _ and actually offer some good advice.
"You cannot plan the rest of your life," the Albemarle County resident and 1977 Mississippi State University graduate said in a 29-minute speech.
Speaking beneath a blue and orange awning on the steps of Old Cabell Hall, he lamented a nation where he said people waste too much time stopping to "put all this stuff in our laptops and our smartphones and our BlackBerries. We waste so much time making plans, and the plans don't work because life has other plans."
Instead, he told students to have a goal and a dream _ and not to confuse them with overwrought road maps to the future.
"Don't confuse planning with dreaming. Dreaming is a worthy pastime," he said. "Planning is a waste."
