Why are people on here so opposed to teachers getting paid a decent wage?

I am continually shocked by the disrespect that teachers are shown in this country as well. In most other countries, teachers are respected and they have the same social and financial capital as doctors and lawyers. My brother in law from Sweden's sister wanted to be a teacher there. She went to all the best schools and got high scoring marks on all her exams, but had to "settle" for being a lawyer.

Teaching degrees are the easiest in every college. 21 percent of public school graduates are functionally illiterate. Teachers get the whole summer off... winter break ... spring break.. every federal holiday plus Jewish and Muslim holidays. They only work 165 out of 365 days a year.

They are doing much more work for less pay than say, a Wall Street investment analyst. Who are, if you don't know, grossly over paid for doing a minimum amount of work. The algorithms do most of the work now and you can do that job with a basic understanding of arithmetic. Teachers are not only expected to be teachers, but also baby sisters, social workers and guidance counselors. As for the education bit, the amount of mental "horsepower" needed to get a degree in education is no more than what it would take to get a certification in the trades.

This reply doesn’t sound elitist. If money is what you wanted then why wouldn’t you just taken the education to become a Wall Street analyst or a tradesman? Fairfax teachers are some of the highest paid in the country. Learn to live on what tax dollars you receive while you walk and enjoy the early retirement golden package that only government workers receive.

What does the OP consider "a decent wage"?
Teacher salaries almost everywhere are well above the local living wage. Teacher salaries in FCPS are well above the Virginia average. Teacher salaries in FCPS are in line with teacher salaries in most nearby jurisdictions. Most teachers in FCPS make more than the per capita income for Fairfax County. By most metrics FCPS teachers are making a decent wage.
"Decent wage" when used by teachers is code language. For some it means being paid enough to support a family of four in a medium class lifestyle including owning a single family detached home in a nearby neighborhood. By that standard relatively few people in Fairfax County make a decent wage. For others it means being paid at the same level as high demand professionals. Yet teachers don't have to go through the same weeding out process as some of those professionals and they don't have the same risks including income fluctuations as others. Plus they knew all of this going in.

Jeezus anybody call fall off a turnip truck and be a teacher. If anything they are overpaid. I've seen sixth graders routinely correcting the grammar of teachers in FCPS.

It's all about what's being taught and the quality of the finished product. The United Auto Workers demanded regular raises for years despite turning out junk products until Americans turned to Asia for quality products. Many teachers are no different. It's why so many parents are turning to private schools and academies.

IRRELEVANT. There are over 200 law schools in the U.S. that graduate around 34,000 new lawyers a year. There are a number of states where the bar pass rate is over 70%. If you were facing criminal charges would you the least qualified person who had just managed to pass the bar to represent you, or would you want someone who knew what he was doing? School systems that offer decent compensation can usually get their pick of the better teacher candidates. School systems that offer bottom dollar usually have to settle for whomever they can get.
This doesn't mean that FCPS teachers need to be paid better. The standard of comparison is how well FCPS teachers are paid relative to teachers in the area and in the state. We are well ahead of the state average. We may not be Arlington County but we are competitive with what other northern Virginia school systems pay.

It isn't that simple Ralphie. It wasn't the quality of the product that slammed American automakers. Many of us remember how underpowered Hondas were and how quickly some other Japanese cars turned to rust. Plus to this day the Japanese haven't figured out how to build a car that can be easily maintained. The difference was that Americans suddenly had an appetite for low cost cars that got high MPG and Detroit had nothing to offer. It was when the Japanese realized they couldn't continue to expand based on those factors alone that the quality of Japanese cars started to improve.

teachers in our area are an exception rather than the rule when it comes to pay and credentials. It is not so easy to be a teacher for nearby school systems, even within fcps. To your point, teachers in other nations go through a rather strenuous "weeding" out process. They need certain certifications, they need to take exams and they have standards that must be met. This is why they command higher salaries and a higher level of respectability.
I think the other issue with teachers in the states is that for most Americans, if you one is not contributing anything of meaningful direct economic value, they are deemed as "less" essential. Pretty sad way of thinking. This should change.

FCPS can't afford to pay teachers a decent wage because they spend outlandish sums of money to out-of-state "consultants" who promote their bullshit political correctness agendas on gender and race reparations

Being a "baby sister" is one of the lowest paying jobs in America.
