Although it makes it seem bad because they were bringing "aid" and Israel unleashed a commando unit on them.. they have every right to shoot a motherfucker coming at them with the intent to kill AND EQUIPPED FOR IT (if later this is proven false, forgive me my smelly Turkish friends).

They were trying to sail in to a battle zone! They were offered the chance to redirect their ships, unload cargo, and have it delivered for them (after submitting to an inventory) but chose to try to kill some Israeli commandos.





Some random guy (Israeli plant?!):

the Israely soldiers warned them and explained it to them over and over. the people on the shpis only cursed the soldiers as an answer. when the ships came close to haifa, the order was given, and Israeli Comando soldiers arrived to the ships. they didn't expected such resistance. because of that, their "weapons" were anti-tiots tools like paintball guns. but the "peace activits" attacked the soldiers with knifes, poles, guns, Molotov cocktail , smoke granades and other cold and warm weapons.

If this was any other country, it wouldn't be a problem; but since it is Israel, lots of people are going to throw up their arms in disgust.

What Israel did was completely justified.

Justified? How so? Because they wanted to? I dont know where/how any country would just "get away" with doing something like this! In fact I say just the opposite...holocaust guilt will stop all European contries from doing/saying anything of substance. Some day...what Israel sows..they will reap.

Israel has a right to protect themselves as much as any other nation does. These ships were suspected of delivering arms amongst the "supplies" they were bringing in. So yeah, Israel was justified in boarding them.

They gave them plenty of opportunities to comply and have the supplies delivered, but the folks trying to push in the supplies wanted to make a scene out of it. Well, they got their "scene" - I hope they can justify to the families of the dead guys why it was worth taking on the Israeli navy and special forces.

The only ones provoking violence here were the folks on those ships. Period.

Some of my muslim friends are all up-in-arms over this thing, but I just put it to them plain and simple. Israel could have simply fired upon the vessel with a warship, since it was attempting to run a blockade. However, they took the more low-key approach which involved a NCB-VBSS (Non-Compliant Boarding - Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure). The minute they boarded, the IDF commandos were being assaulted by a mob, and they resisted firing until a couple of their guys were nearly being beaten to death on the deck. Some of them even engaged in Hand-to-Hand for over two hours!!! If that isn't serious restraint, then I have no idea what is.

I'm conflicted here... The group on the ships was from a Turkish aid group that has ties to terrorist organizations, so the likelyhood that they did have weapons is pretty high. On the other hand, Israel's blockade of the Gaza strip is bullshit. Boarding the ship to check for weapons seems reasonable, but using deadly force seems excessive. If the "aid workers" were armed, justified use of deadly force. If not, it was obviously uncalled for. I don't know what to make of this shit and I hope that Iran doesn't get involved because at that point...fukitol.

You understand the reason for the blockade right? It has nothing to do with normal, day-to-day supplies. Anyone that wants to ship aid there in an open and above board manner is free to do so, and the Palestinians receive so much "aid" already, it is doubtful any of them are having issues other than for things like iPods or anything else. Many of them have no jobs, but unless they piss off the political bosses there they don't suffer for regular things like food. They are the epitome of the welfare state, without any of the worry of holding debt, as they don't pay for any of it.

Both sides have had their bad moments on the long term issues, but right now the Israelis are pretty well justified in their blockade. There are a number of other routes for getting legitimate aid into Gaza - none of them blocked - but this was purely a stunt by folks who want shipping lanes opened so they can start shipping in missiles and other weapons again.

I haven't been following the reasoning for the blockade outside of Israel's attempt to put pressure on the Hamas-controlled government in Gaza (which seems like it would do more to mobilize support behind Hamas than to break it).

But, I have to say that if I were an aid worker on a ship and I had been fed this bullshit about Israelis being "the devil" my entire life, and then I saw these commandos landing on the ship, I would probably assume that they were coming to kill me, so I'm not sure I can get too worked up over a guy picking up a crowbar in perceived self-defense against an Uzi or M-16.

The blockade prevents missiles, and construction materials that can be used for bunkers from entering Gaza. As RV posted, humanitarian aid can be shipped through channels where it is screened for weapons. This flotilla had a purpose beyond getting aid to Palestinians.

Why should they? Israel is easy - they aren't threatening to attack and destroy their neighbors every time they feel slighted by the world. They aren't out kidnapping sailors from other nations who cross imaginary water boundaries, or sink ships of other nations that are doing everything they can to avoid going to war with them.

Unlike the Palestinians that whine about how sad they are - and instead of working to improve their situation, they train their children to grow up to be suicide bombers. Or the happy Communists who, even if they aren't happy with their conditions, can do nothing about it other than get rolled over by tanks, or secreted off to prisons where they are never heard from again, and no one complains that they were never mirandized. Or for the terrorists - that somehow their rights were in jeopardy after they went out of their way to blow up innocents or pretend that their planning to kill people just traveling on vacations or riding the bus to school was anything but deserving of the punishment or incarceration they received.

Granted, the Israelis will destroy anything they deem as an imminent threat to them - but then again the Arab countries around them do say they want to destroy them on an almost regular basis.

I have to say +0.8, and it sucks. The 0.2 is held back because if commandos raid a boat it isn't beyond the pale that someone will try to defend the boat and a fight ensues so I don't buy "self defense" for the raiding party. But the raid actually was a form of restraint. They could have blown the boats out of the water without the raid, and they may do that the next time.

If they showed "weapons from the boats" no one would believe them anyway, and it would be dumb for them to stand aside and let more weapons and rockets get into Gaza. Then the rockets come over, Israel retaliates with more infrastructure-leveling response and closes roads, Palestinians can't go to work and impoverishment gets worse. Rinse, repeat.
