Is't possible to have the Somali flag flying in the gov't centre in ffx in honour of our independance day? Many, many yrs when I lived in Minnesota they use have them flying in state and local gov't buildings in Minneapolis and St.Paul.

Well, we gained our independence from Italy July 1st, 1960 and Somalis thru out the world celebrate that day. I remember the Ethiopian flag flying in Alexandria (the courthouse) back in 2003 for some special event. I know the Somali community isn't as large as others in the DC metro area, but it would be nice if Fairfax celebrated our independence day.

Well there is more Somalis here in Nova and in other sorroundings jurisdictions (Mont. Co, Baltimore Co) than there are canadiens. This is besides the point. I see many young Somali teens that know nothing of their homeland, this is sad.

ummm, they always fly the Somali Flag in Ohio, and Minnesota govt buildings all the time. Those two states have a large Somali population. Virginia and Maryland has not so large Somali people, but we are getting there. So its only fair its flown here too.

I once had an altercation with a Somalian woman at the Pentagon
Metro stop. I was next in line to get on a bus when a Somalian
woman tried to jump on ahead of me, nearly knocking me over. I
threw my arm up to stop her and told her to please go to the
end of line like everybody else. She started shouting at me in
whatever language she speaks and I was afraid she was going to
attack me but fortunately a Metro cop saw the ruckus and walked
over and told her to go to the end of the line. (In English)
She was furious and once she got on the bus and it started
moving she began shouting at me from one of the middle seats.
(I was in the rear) This went on all the way to the Navy Annex
where the driver stopped and told her to shut up or get off.

I don't give a damn is she came from Somalia or not and I don't

Hello once again guys. It's that time of the year again. It will be 1st of July before we know and we are trying to organize a community get together at the grounds of the Fairfax County government centre. We have been very unsucessfull in the last 6yrs in holding the event in the grounds of the centre and having the flag fly there. Once again, the Somali community in the Washington DC metro area is going to start the ball rolling in this. This time we are lucky because our independence day would co insidize with the opening of the first Somali diplomatic embassy in the U.S for the first time since it was closed in 1991. And we might even have the Somali embassodor to the U.S present at the event.

I'm confused. Is this for independence from the Italians or the British? No matter, nothing seems to have gone well there since. My grandmother's brother served in Somalia during his conscription in the Italian army; it was the highlight of his life, and he would be turning over in his grave at seeing Somalia today

Just to keep you guys updated, we are now in better position of finally having the Somali flag fly in the Fairfax County government centre for our Independence Day. The Somali community in the DC metro had had sent an official request to Fairfax county government asking that our flag honoured and flown for our Independence Day. As of right now, it's 50/50 they might approve it or they might deny it. But there is always next year. We also sent an official request to Montgomery county in Maryland to honour the Somali Independence Day there.

Sounds like we should have a flag burning protest if they fly this flag.

Because others are allowed to fly their flag when they are celebrating their Independence day, idiot. The Fairfax government celebrates and even has some of it's literature in certain foreign languages (Korean, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Etc). Granted the Somali population here in Fairfax isn't as huge as some of the other nationalities, but we need to get the ball rolling in this.

Which country flags are raised over the Gov Center to celebrate their independence day because I have never seen any.

As you are all aware, we are getting close to that sacred date again of the Somali Independence day. And our has been to petition the county to fly the Somali flag over the Fairfax Government Centre in honour of independence. We are starting the work now, and i would keep you guys updated on how it turns out.

As you people are aware now, we are getting close to that special day and we are making every effort to have our flag raised in Fairfax County Government Centre. We are working very tirelessly to make that happen.

Or at the very least, get a permit from the county or have the county do Fireworks in our honour. I also read somewhere that the Somali Interior Minister is involved and is working very hard with the local government to make this possible.
