People are animals.

This might seem out of place amidst the circle-jerking and hot or not threads, but here's something for the philisophically inclined.

I submit that, in spite of our culture, self-awareness, technological advancements, religion, etc., we are essentially still animals. The same behaviors exhibited throughout the animal kingdom are evident in human society, as well. An understanding of animal behavior can help greatly in understanding people.

Humans are animals. We're just highly evolved animals capable of greater mental functionality beyond basic instincts.

Well, we share an almost identical genetic makeup as most animals, we share the same needs for food and shelter and we're all stuck on the same planet, so it's really no big revelation that we share similar traits.

Where we differ is our collective ambition to find out more about our origins and what we're capable of. We also differ in the way we moralize our own actions and ultimately accept the fact that we can't always live up to them.

No philosophy to apply here. It's biology that rules in the animal
kingdom and yes, we are animals. Waiter! I'll have another hemlock please!

I got to thinking about this the other morning when I heard some wretched birds outside my window. For a solid 20 minutes, the one by my window would exchange chirps with one that sounded about a block away. If it was to indicate the location of food, identify location, or warn of predators, why would it go on so long? I have to think there was more to it than just the idiotic chirping of two retarded birds (even though I really, really hate birds).

Listen to the insipid conversations that people have with each other, and it's really not that much different than the senseless babbling of birds.

Go on, get it out of your system.

When you get down to it, it's pretty obvious everything we do is motivated by the same instincts as wild animals. Food, shelter, mating, self-preservation. That's about it. We tend to complicate things in our minds but that's really all it's all about.

people are animals, nothing new there. what i find funny is how people think humans are superior. take away the tools we use and almost every animal out there could kick the ever loving shit out of us. some can even do so when you have the proper tools to destroy them. how we became what we are today is a mystery to me, im not talking about evolution, but more of how we live. like the clothes we wear, the coffee we drink, the whole what you have makes you who you are type of society. why would humans strive to live like this? sure our brains are more evolved, but why strive to live in a society that kills you mentally? it bothers me that we live in a materialistic world. we should go back to our roots.

"People are animals" is my favorite Depeche Mode song. Of course, the beauty of the song is how it answers the question, "Why should it be, you and I get along so awfully?"

The best times to live in are the modern times because humans have a vast storage of built up knowledge that gets passed from generation to generation. Animals have instinct which is handy but severely limited. Humans are animals but we sustain our development by this storage of knowledge, development of culture and civilizations. Sure there could be a lord of the flies situation with the break down of civilization but we would still have developed cornerstones such as making tools, animal husbandry, written records, speech, language and rule of law. These things develop from the basic to the concrete to problem solving and to the abstract and we advance away from basic animal instinct and our wild animal past.

Humans and probably a handful of more intelligent animals - such as dolphins, elephants and some primates - have a sense of their own mortality. I think there would be some benefit for the rest of the animals out there that have no concept of their own mortality.

One thing that separates us is how we have managed to protect weak members of our population. What happens in the animal kingdom if members get too fat and do little work and don't help the pack gain and utilize resources at all (in fact hurt the process)? What happens when some members are dopey? There is no pecking order based on physical abilities for much of anything, in fact our species protects the weak and lame. The fact that Cary hasn't banned 97% of this site is a testament to that.

Humans are too competitive and are always looking for a way to discriminate. Plus, we have rarely ever developed an equilibrium with the environment, we just keep taking and expanding with little concern for repercussions.

As far being animals, we share over 90% of the same genetic makeup as chimpanzees. That's a humbling thought.

I think Agent Smith said it best in The Matrix:

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area, and you multiply, and multiply, until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet, you are a plague, and we are the cure."

We have animal bodies. We have the same Creator that animals were made. Animal behavior has similarities, but many differences as well.

Humans have more tools... so what? We are also dependent on so many things. A few lucky ones have only had a taste of true freedom.

Is our "greater mental capacity" a benefit? Or is it a hindrance?

I wish I was a bird... A badass bird... like a vulture or something...

I understand it on a visceral level, and it's hard to put into words. It's really more of a sense than a thought. I'll try.

Some are compelled to get money to buy expensive suits and drive flashy cars, like a frog inflating its neck sack to display pretty colors. Musicians are more like the singing of birds. Athletes are akin to rams butting heads.

We wait in line overnight for the first iPads, PS3s, and movie screenings. Having something exclusive to us that others don't have makes us more attractive. We want to be a part of that person's life, so we can experience what they have.

I think that there would be a lot less problems in the world if there were far, far less of us. Humans are territorial, always seeking to claim something for their own. With no end to the number of competitors we have, we must constantly seek out more to establish our dominance over each other.

I could go on, but for now, I won't. I'll tell you this, though; it's very rare for me to meet someone I haven't already met before.

On some level though, animals seem to be honest, and have more compassion than quite a few people do. At least domesticated animals do.

i must be a terrible animal because for the most part, i lack these attributes. the only time i compete is when it is for fun. when it stops being fun or becomes a matter of pride, i quit. i dont really own anything "unique" (aside from things i make myself) and i dont do anything to be an elitist (like being the first to own a product). as far as territorial, my stuff is your stuff, though i dont let people take advantage of that fact (when i've confronted people for doing so, they are either embarrassed or angry).

i guess it's back to Animalism 101 for me. :P

I don't know much about bird flu but isn't that more of a chicken problem?

Bird Flu
Also called: Avian flu, Avian influenza, H5N1

Birds, just like people, get the flu. Bird flu viruses infect birds, including chickens, other poultry and wild birds such as ducks. Most bird flu viruses can only infect other birds. However, bird flu can pose health risks to people. The first case of a bird flu virus infecting a person directly, H5N1, was in Hong Kong in 1997. Since then, the bird flu virus has spread to birds in countries in Asia, Africa and Europe.

Human infection is still very rare.....

Did you have a traumatic experience with a bird? Did a bird attack you, pluck out your eye and fly off with it? Do you hate birds because they chirp in the morning?

Oh, we're getting technical. How tedious.

Rats carried the fleas infected with the plague that wiped out half of Europe in the 14th Century. Did you hear about that?

It's been a few hundred years since the huge plague, but rats and mice carried the bubonic plague from their fleas. It would infect humans from flea bites or from bites from the animals themselves.

One of the many reasons it spread so quickly is because there was a huge spike in rat and mice population after cats were pretty much exterminated (they were thought to be Satanic creatures.)

People are animals.

Animals eat animals.

I eat people.

Cannibals. Our day is coming, the feeble protests of your bourgeois morality notwithstanding.

i dont even know if i buy the fact that we are the smartest animals. i think it is mostly based upon the fact that we have technology, science, and a knowledge base spanning thousands of years. Give dolphins a set of hands, let them create a language/culture/etc, and see if they dont have us in shackels by the end of the year.

not true. This can be seen in animals that live and hunt in packs, such as gorillas. When attacked by poachers, the bigger stronger males stay behind and fight to protect the females and the children. Sacrificing themselves to save the clan.

no they arent, people just simply fail to see the benefits of said behaviors and how self-destructive instinctual behavior can be.

my intention was to convey that people can be so much more than mere animals. we have understanding and the ability to choose using both logic and emotion. it's sad that so many people choose to be slaves to instinctual behavior.
