Big Paydays for the Chiefs in the Media

Excerpts From The New York Times:

By JOSEPH PLAMBECK
Published: May 2, 2010

"Top executives at the country’s largest media companies continued to reel in multimillion-dollar pay packages in 2009, a year of widespread cost-cutting throughout the industry. In several cases, the packages even increased from the year before.

At the top of the list is Leslie Moonves, chief executive of the CBS Corporation, whose pay package in 2009 totaled almost $43 million, more than twice what he made in 2008, according to an analysis by Equilar, an executive compensation research firm.

Not far behind was Viacom’s chief executive, Philippe P. Dauman, who was paid nearly $34 million, a 22 percent increase over 2008. Sumner M. Redstone, who controls CBS and Viacom, was paid more than $33 million from the two companies combined.

CBS returned to profitability in 2009 — $227 million — after a huge write-down in 2008."

Last year CBS stock jumped 70% do to this. Then we have this:

NEW YORK (MarketWatch)(Last Thurs) -- CBS Corp. posted a 6% decline in first-quarter profit Thursday, hurt by weakness in its radio business, costs related to the sale of some radio stations, and a decline in television licensing revenue.

It's funny how the same media that loves doing hit pieces on "Fat cat bankers", CEO's of insurance companies and their profits while their numbers are doing far worse in most cases, especially The Big Three. Yet their CEO's are pulling down higher salaries in a lot of cases while selling off assets and losing market share.

You know there has been some talk of bailing out the Big News Papers in this country and I bet guys like Moonves, and the proven brain dead moron Jeffery Zucker of NBC feel they are just as entitled. And that is what pisses me off. These dip shits can't sail their own ships worth a fuck but they're only too happy to sick their attack hounds on everyone else.

bankers are making their money off of handouts from the Fed by buying treasuries using virtually interest-free money, frontrunning purchases of treasuries and MBS by the Fed, fraudulent accounting, selling new mortgages for the GSE's, and so on. Let them go out and work for a living instead of making their profits off of wedging themselves in between the government and the rest of the economy.

Your on the right track, and pretty damn smart! (kind of rare these days)

It may surprise you to hear that I agree with you on most points...However;

It's not that complicated to understand as you may well know. What spawned the Mortgage Backed Securities Market (MBS) or better yet the Sub-prime Mortgage Backed Security Market (SMBS) other than Fannie and Freddie?
Current lending guidelines and regulations written by Congress during the Clinton Adm. were enforced by his Justice Dept. Deputy Attorney General, Jamie Gorelick. Everybody screams for regulation and when enforced, the inevitable tools evolve to deal with the fallout. We then blame the people closest to the surface, "The Greedy Bankers"! Not Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Bill Clinton, Janet Reno or Jamie Gorelick. (The GW Bush Adm. tried to scale back FredM & FanM in 2004 but could have tried a whole hell of a lot harder)

Rather than facing what would have amounted to numerous discrimination challenges from the Justice Dept., financial institutions played the cards they were dealt and complied with what can only be described as affirmative action lending laws, albeit with some hiding aces up their sleeves. However I don't think we can blame them for taking advantage of the near 0% Fed rate to balance the books now. If we wouldn't have had the sub-prime housing bubble directly caused by government regulation in the first place most of the problems we face today would be non-existent. Banks wouldn't have to play the 0% Fed rate game with the Treasury because the prime would be measurably higher than it is now and our present economic recession would have been less severe and likely could have been avoided all together.

Currently there is nothing being done to revamp Fannie or Freddie so if we get say Eric Holder to sick one of his dogs on the mortgage banking industry like Reno did with Gorelick after all this dies down, we could go through the whole thing again.

Couple all this with Obama bragging about nationalizing student loans and you have a real problem brewing......Again

Here you have the Govt. borrowing money at about 3% and loaning it to students at 6%. This he says is to protect students against, of course, "The Greedy Bankers".

This is just a clever way to tax without calling it a tax. The 3% profit will just disappear into the abyss known as the United States Treasury. I guess this is far more better than say letting banks loan it out to small businesses to expand and hire some of the 2 out of 10 adults in this country who are currently un-employed...........Hey! and thanks for letting me vent to someone that can understand my ramblings!

unfortunately, your stat doesn't support your argument and is too remotely related to your original article to deem it worthy of being in the fairfax forum.

You Sir are a supreme ignoramus. Thousands , millions of citizenry of your ilk are responsible for our great countries dilapidated state of being. Congratulations on your quest for defining intelligence down. You have succeeded in total and abject failure in the grandest form.

If I read this right we have Leslie Moonves to thank for the firing of Mike O'Meara at WJFK. Thank you Leslie Moonves! Hate your bitch of wife on CBS Morning show though.

Marketable talent is instrumental in broadcast media. The "Old Suits" like Moonvez and Zucker's time has passed . They are fossilized dinosaur's in the industry and it is time for them to go with a clean sweep of their entire staff. It is not just who they fire it's who they hire and their track record is dismal at best. Keeping these guys is like letting your grandma command the remote control.

I realize looking up words in the dictionary and then using them in a forum probably makes you feel smart, but it doesn't actually make you smart. Your attempts at insults are futile as it is readily apparent who the dumbass really is. I assume you'll respond after sleeping off the bender you went on last night. Hope you had fun. I suppose staying up til 2 in the morning baking your braincells is one of the perks of being unemployed.

A larger vocabulary comes out in my stool every morning than you possess in all the grey matter trapped in your skull. Eat shit and die you worthless piece of human waste. I bet you're sterile. If not you should be.

Typewriters are "old school" maybe we should bring them back. In Forum Police's case lobotomies are old school and he's a candidate.

Just because you're "old school" on this forum doesn't give you license to be a rude little prick moron. And then he says "Check the record"? He has certainly impressed me with all his vaunted "old school" wisdom and regal just on this thread alone.

Hell, Andy fucking Rooney is "old school" lets get him on here!.... Larry King's "old school" and I highly recommend "After Life: Answers From the Other Side" great read for all "old schoolers".

I stand by every one of my posts here and "Forum Police" can stick his "old school" night stick up his fucking ass.

Get with the program and grow a brain cell. Simple question. Who is the tard that posted a clearly "off topic" thread in the general forum? If you can't afford the mirror, go into the public restroom at the bus station you live at or let me know and I'll send you the two bucks to go to CVS and buy one. Just don't spend it on thunderbird.
