Seeking help

OK. I have been here awhile, but never posted or registered. I know how you all are to people who are looking for help. So, please, be kind. I really have done a lot of work on my own, but I saw there was a thread a while ago that kinda applies to what I am seeking. Hey, what can it hurt?

I am a writer. I have written several stories, and I really believe they are worthy of being published. I have gotten great reviews from the people who have read my work as well. I have worked on my first book for 15 years. Is there some way to get my foot in the door with the publishers? It is next to impossible to get anywhere with the literary agents that I have contacted. I always get the same thing, a type written slip of paper (not even a full sheet) saying they are not soliciting any manuscripts at this time, but feel free to contact them again in the near future as the situation is always changing (not an exact quote, but the gist of it).

What am I doing wrong? Is there anyone out in NOVA who has published and can offer guidance?
Thanks in advance.

Proceed with extreme caution when it comes to self-publishing, if you decide to try that route.

I knew a guy who used a se;f-publishing house to scam people in a rather elaborate way. If I have time later I will try to rehash the details, the scam wasn't complicated if I recall, but my memory sucks so I'd need to explain carefully.

I think that many well known authors had their manuscripts rejected for years before finally becoming successful.

Get your writing copyrighted then publish online. Then post a link so we can all read it. If musicians have to get their stuff out through demos and small record labels then writers could start small ie the internet as well. Try the grass roots approach first.

Well, I do have my first book copyrighted. I did that way back in 1994 I think. I will look into publishing online though. I really would like for someone to look at it and tell me what they think. I will let you know. Thanks to all so far, and thanks for being nice!

It's 10 years later. How did you make out?
