DC Voting rights bill dead on arrival!

House punts on D.C. voting bill

From today's Washington Times:

Stephen Dinan

The House will not vote on a bill to grant the District of Columbia a voting member of Congress, the majority leader said Tuesday.

Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, said he would not bring the bill to the floor because it cannot reach the floor without add-ons that he cannot accept, such as gun rights in the city.

"I do not see the ability to move it in this session of Congress," Mr. Hoyer said, calling the lack of a voting representative "a blight on democracy."

If it is a blight, it is because of him. Steny should grow a sack and bring it to the floor, if not STFU and go home.

I wonder what the average teabagger thinks about this shining example of taxation without representation?

Well, considering most Tea Party participants also respect what the constitution says about voting representation, they would probably tell a DC resident that if they want voting representation, they should move to a state and not live in a district or territory.

Who gives a fuck? Anybody who lives around here nows that DC
has the most irresponsible electorate in the entire country.
They would vote for Donald Duck if he was black and promised
free money. If DC residents are so unhappy they can do what I
did and move elsewhere. I love Virginia's gun rights. Fuck DC.

And we all know how disrespectful it is to ask that our fellow coutryman be granted the right to vote for the people who tax them.

Your teary eyed weeping heartstrings argument aside, respectful or not, there are laws and rules to be followed. I'm all for passing an amendment to the consitution to give them voting rights, but as it stands now, the constitution is clear: "The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States."

Simply put, DC is not a state. They got Presidential electors in the 23rd amendment. If they want a member and/or Senators, amend the constitution.

I'll join the Tea Party as soon as I find my pants. Maybe I'll even
run for Congress if we can get enough people to vote for me.

It's been a federal district since its inception, it is NOT a state, and therefore it does not have such rights.

Also, the people in D.C. need to stop their bitching. They already have special privileges, including the ability to attend any state college in the country at an in-state tuition rate. If they want to be treated like a state, either move, or give up the extra, non-state like privileges.

DC was never meant to be a city for dwelling in the first place. The original design was for a monument city where government would function, not for people to eat and sleep and entertain.

It's just another mediocre city with a shit inner core, shit public schools, high crime rate, and dirty streets.

DC should be married to Maryland - that way for folks that live there, they become part of Maryland for determination of voting districts. The federal land remains federal, and they are required to pay taxes to the State for the land like any other landowner.

I don't think Maryland would be too eager to bring in DC. It would be a financial black hole.

Exactly, it would be another PG or even worse. Plus, the MD state police would be stressed as it would be a new jurisdiction for them to be responsible for.

Yes, they could tax them, assign them a representative and start collecting more federal tax money to pay for the land they are using. Win-win for Maryland. They already know how to police shitty areas so no new training would be needed.

Think of the costs of bringing everything up to MD standards. Roads, schools, public housing, emergency services, etc. Maryland has enough headaches with PG, Baltimore, they wouldn't want DC.

The problem with DC, is it is NOT a State, and it is trying to deal with State problems. By adding them to an existing State, yes, it would be a problem at first - but they are already setup to handle many of the issues DC just cannot deal with.

Many of the DC services are victims of their own disorganization. Costs for fire and rescue are inflated because of union rules that the government wasn't prepared to fight. The street department and other services suffer from similar problems - everyone knows the jokes about seeing 10 guys standing around while one guy works to open a manhole cover. That is the norm for them. You get these services rolled into a proper State structure and they would become just as problematic as any other jurisdiction with special needs.

Another thing to consider is there is very little middle class in DC. People there are typically either at poverty levels or have incomes several times the national average. Would the high income residents stay if Maryland comes in? Or will MD be left with a city with nothing but welfare cases?

So instead you make it a welfare state? That is stupid in and of itself. The only way to change things is to get them into a system that knows how to handle the issues. As has been pointed out, DC is a special district - in all reality they should have no residential areas there, that would make things a lot easier.

The constitution aside, I think Puerto Rico should have voting rights.

The best answer is to create a federal enclave and give the rest to MD. Sure they get Anacostia, but also Rock Creek Park and all the super-expensive homes in Northwest. Maryland would benefit from the additional tax revenue.

Versus creating a State? Or ... ? I say either make Maryland responsible, or move all the residents out and make it a Federal district that only houses government or service buildings.

I think a lot of people with six or seven digit incomes would move to Virginia, Maryland taxes are atrocious. The city would be left with nothing but the lower incomes, like I said, in DC you are either rich or poor.

Well, they would be added to the voting pool - maybe their voting block would change Maryland politics enough to see changes in tax rates.

He's a troll - pure and simple. He posts threads with anonymous user names where he cuts and pastes entire, unattributed articles, and then jumps into almost every thread I am in, and calls me a liar. And, when his chips are totally down, he tantrums on the forum, flooding threads with cut and paste random BS.

And he wonders why no one takes him seriously.

That is the Vince Delusion. Facts are nothing, only Vince knows the truth of all.
