Does Sarah Palin have a reading comprehension problem?

Sarah Palin Mangles Obama’s Quotes To Paint Him As America-Hater

We should probably resign ourselves to the fact that every utterance Sarah Palin makes is widely going to be treated as news until she declares she isn’t running for president. And quite possibly beyond. So all we can do is try to fact-check what she says and hope others do the same.

The latest: In a new Facebook missive, Palin butchered Obama’s quotes at the nuke summit in a strikingly dishonest (even for her) way, tearing them out of context to suggest he’s uncomfortable wielding American power and is hostile towards American exceptionalism:

Mr. President, is a strong America a problem?

Asked this week about his faltering efforts to advance the Middle East peace process, President Obama did something remarkable. In front of some 47 foreign leaders and hundreds of reporters from all over the world, President Obama said that “whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower.”

Whether we like it or not? Most Americans do like it.

Here’s what the President actually said:

But what we can make sure of is, is that we are constantly present, constantly engaged, and setting out very clearly to both sides our belief that not only is it in the interests of each party to resolve these conflicts but it’s also in the interest of the United States. It is a vital national security interest of the United States to reduce these conflicts because whether we like it or not, we remain a dominant military superpower, and when conflicts break out, one way or another we get pulled into them. And that ends up costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure.

As you can see, Palin and her team of ghostwriters plucked Obama’s remark out of context to quote him saying “whether we like it or not,” we are a superpower. In reality, he was saying that “whether we like it or not,” we get pulled into international conflicts that cost us American lives — so it’s in our security interests to resolve them.

Since everything Palin says in her tightly-controlled media environment will be treated as news for the next two years and beyond, all we can hope for is that those lavishing attention on what she says inject a bit of context and reality into the discussion.

Actually, it would appear that the Obama speechwriters have a reading comp problem and it appears FUNdamental does as well (he's probably a product of the FCPS and NOT smarter than a 5th grader).

If Obama, did indeed, and I am not saying he didn't mean to say “whether we like it or not,” we get pulled into international conflicts that cost us American lives — so it’s in our security interests to resolve them," the statement was poorly written/delivered to convey that message.

A fifth grader in the FCPS could probably come up with a sentence that read:

But what we can make sure of is, is that we are constantly present, constantly engaged, and setting out very clearly to both sides our belief that not only is it in the interests of each party to resolve these conflicts but it’s also in the interest of the United States. It is a vital national security interest of the United States to reduce these conflicts because we remain a dominant military superpower, and when conflicts break out, one way or another we get pulled into them whether we like it or not. You should ask the Catholic Church how well it's worked out with closeted gays teaching in their schools.

Probably as well as all the gay pedos arrested in public schools. The Catholic schools seem to have less of the sit going on that the public shit system in this country.

My kids don't go to private school. As for openly gay teachers, I could care less as long as they don't pull the same shit as their heterosexual counterparts.

Actually, the part I quoted from Mr. Damental was from the same article lambasting her for taking "HUSSEIN" Obama's quote out of context.

It's not that I hate Sarah Palin. She's stupid, useless, and the only reason she's still relevant is because sex still sells. If the GOP wants to use her as some sort of mascot, great. If Fox "News" wants to put another bimbo pundit on TV, whatever.

What I hate is how dumb people take what she says as gospel, and think she's some sort of visionary. She's the stereotype of "Pretty Girl Everyone Said Was Smart Because She's Pretty." If people would bother to put their blinders away and note the complete lack of substance beneath her skin, I'm sure public opinion would be much different.

This is typical though - the problem that "elites" don't like is she is pretty much a typical, average low-to-middle income American. Populists appeal to the American people from time to time, especially when you get folks in office who, no matter how smart they are, act as if the American people don't exist in domestic issues.

We got Reagan because of Carter, Bush because of Clinton, etc. Many times these folks are much smarter then they are perceived. In Palin's case she is pretty much as dumb as she lets on. There will be plenty of other candidates by the time the 2012 elections are held. Just look at what happened to Hillary for example.

Sarah Palin is the only presidential candidate that is from outside Washington. If don't agree with Washington politics as usual then you have to vote for Palin.

The Tea Party is growing larger and larger every month and will be running candidates in all the November elections!

So were Bill Clinton when he got elected in 1992 and Jimmy Carter when he got elected in 1976.

Actually, it's the candidates that understand how "politics as usual" works that do the best job as President. Jimmy Carter came in with this attitude that he wasn't going to play those Washington games, and it sank his Presidency.

Wishful thinking. The movement will grow just enough to split the vote withe GOP and insure the Dems maintain control of Congress. Nice thought, though.

I don't... She...

Yes. That's exactly what us elites don't like about her. Damn her proletariat appeal, what with her book deals, presidential campaigns, national exposure on television, paid appearances, public relations team, stylists, private jet, and half-a-million dollar house that she's not in danger of foreclosing on.

The sad part of her taking what he said out of context is that it is now considered gospel and the other conservative leaders will use this quote forever and ever as the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

I don't see how the meaning changes that drastically even when taken out of context. In and out of context it portrays the same issue - we are a military superpower (for now) and like it or not, that gives us certain responsibilities. As a matter of fact, taken in context, it almost sounds worse - as if he is arguing that it would be in our best interest to NOT be a superpower so we wouldn't be drawn into these issues. In either case, the context to me is clear:

We are a dominant military superpower, and there are people that do and don't like that. Both internally and externally. It isn't truly clear whether he thinks it is a good thing or not.

That quote that Palin used was not mis-quoted by her, but it was rather mis-spoken by Obama (At least I most certainly hope so).

This is just the normal misrepresentation of democratic policies that the republican party has always done. They are liars....as RV is a liar! The reason they do it is because its a sucessful technique..if you tell a lie loud enough and long enough people will begin to beleive it..and that is all the Republican Part is interested in. They are masters at getting people to vote against their vested interests.

The argument is that it was "horribly mangled" - I call BS. Slight meaning change - sure - but it is not a gross misrepresentation of what he was saying or implying.

"Horribly mangled," "slight meaning change..." Whatever you want to call it, the point is: He said one thing, and people that disagree with him are taking it a different way. If presented with the original speech, void of all spin, I would take it as, "We get dragged into these conflicts because we are one of the few countries able to deal with them."

Was I the OP Meph? I didn't post the topic - I merely took issue with the overhype on the meaning change. I have seen stories that other people have used where they not only took what someone said and added a word that TOTALLY changed the meaning of what was said, yes the MSM ran with the quote as if that was exactly what they did say. So in this case, the only reason it is being "overhyped" is because it is close enough to the truth that they have to attack Palin (yet again - like it never stops) to make sure it is dismissed as nonsensical.

I am not buying into any rhetoric - on either side of the issue. There are much more glaring examples of taking quotes out of context that are truly worth getting upset over. This case was BS.

It is not BS. Maybe Greg Sargent sensationalized it a bit, but that's because he's a blogger for a website. He never claims to be part of a "fair and balanced" "news" organization. Either way, it's still nothing compared to the hype Fox News puts on trivial shit Obama does. The same Fox News that, coincidentally, Sarah Palin works for. The same Fox News that has some fat, pasty white guy (pick one) reminding us that Obama is taking us into some sort of communist-socialism.

It is not BS, because Sarah Palin is, whether we like it or not, a leader. We should expect our leaders to be honest and truthful, and not distort the truth to fit into what they think should be reality. She distorted the truth of what Obama said, and that shouldn't be tolerated by Democrats and Republicans alike.

That is the very reason I initially supported the Iraq war, but turned against it when the WMD angle was exposed as bullshit.

Call me next time WashingTone-Locian starts defending a prominent Democrat/liberal for taking something a Republican said out of context to further their agenda, and I'll say the same thing.

Really?? Vince has said numerous times he is retired and both Cary and Gravis have revealed that he uses AOL; I don't know many government agencies that use AOL. I'm sure you knew this already, being a Magnum P.I. and all.

Yeah, all kinds of people tell the truth on the interwebz. Not retired, just stupid. Why not just see which agency is banned every so often after a Vince bomb?
