The video shows a student identified as John "Jack" McKenna skipping down the street and approaching two officers on horseback. After a brief exchange, two officers on foot slam McKenna against a wall and he falls to the ground. A third officer joins the first two, and the three strike McKenna with nightsticks while he is on the ground as other students scatter.

Apparently the guy was knocked out before they started "subduing" him with night sticks. It is possible the guy was drunk and said something threatening to the cops on horseback (like talking about fucking with the horse). But the relentless beating when the guy is down (and apparently not resisting) and the fact that the report filed by police in no way reflects what actually happened leads me to believe some PG cops are fucked and PG county is going to be shelling some dough out to this kid.

I can understand why the cops were pissed, because the UMD students were acting like fools, assaulting police horses, destroying property, etc. However, when it involves PG County, I also know full well that their police force is right there at the bottom of the barrel along with the LAPD, NOPD, etc.

Wtf? The more I look at this video, the more I think that the jackass got what he deserved via the police beatdown. I was watching it again on the news last night, and right before they jumped him, you could see him skipping up to them like a drunken idiot, and getting right up against the horse. The story, as originally portrayed by the "kid", was that he had been doing nothing but walking by the shenanigans, and that he wasn't taking part in the raucous celebrations. The video however, shot that story down, and so we know that he lied as well. Not to mention that his dad is a judge, and it seems like this kid most likely got his kicks growing up by acting arrogant towards authority.

he did not deserve to be beaten so severely. sure it was very dumb of him to skip towards the officers, but they cops should have handled it differently. they had riot shields with them so they could have just pushed him away. they did not need 3 officers beating him with nightsticks. the cops overreacted.

Yup but he was trying to startle the horse, it was not as innocent as a drunken fuck skipping around. Unfortunately for him there were officers standing right next to the horse and they probably felt he was trying to scare the horse so it would trample them. That is why I think they were so mad and went a little overboard on the beat down, but none the less he got his beatdown and HE DESERVED IT! Also if I was on the jury I would NOT CONVICT THE OFFICERS. There is nothing I hate more than drunk ass disrespectful trust fund college punks.

They could have a) told him to back the fuck off, b) as previously noted pushed him away with big ass riot shields, or c) just bear maced him.
