Never known a kid who could drive a stick decently, so no on the GTI. Screw the Lexus. Old man cars. Volvos, I don't know. The Accord is a great car, boring, safe, he'll have trouble destroying it. I'd go with that.

Volvo has the best crash rating.

I dating a cheerleader in high school and her Dad her made her drive a big ass Lincoln Town car. His theory was if she got into an accident the huge car would protect her. She looked funny as hell driving it around in high school.

The Honda will be the most reliable and easiest on your insurance bill. They are safe cars. The GTI would be the fun car, but if your kid has a little too much to drink (and they will) none of their friends will be able to drive them home in it. Very few new drivers are learning to drive manual transmission these days. It may bet tagged as being a "sports car" or whatever they call GTI's/WRX's/etc. for insurance purposes? I got mine a four door SUV. Sits higher so they can have good situational awareness, has four wheel drive for piece of mind in the winter and they can take it camping and to the beach, and is relatively slow so there is no fear of racing!! But whatever you decide make sure your kid is comfortable driving it. Can they adjust the seats and mirrors to fit their height, are there bad blind spots, can they park it easily.

Get a 1960's or 70's vintage full-size dump truck. Have a decent racing seat and harness installed, and some good solid wooden bumpers. The thing will be pretty much indestructible and will simply drive over top of any automobile it might get into a collision with. As another bonus it won't go over 70 mph so the risk of speeding tickets is much lessened. You could register it as a commercial vehicle to your own LLC landscaping business or whatever and save a load of money on insurance.

Can't park commercial vehicles on FCPS property unless you are conducting business, and being a student is not "conducting business".

Remove the dump bed and bolt a small camping trailer in its place. Voila, instant motorhome and no longer commercial.

The "Junkyard Jews" up the road in Damascus do it all the time for customers.

ONe teen is driving my 99 Merc E320 4matic - its a tank but Id like her in something with ESC. She loves the Merc and its never ever broken down in the 10 years we have owned it. No repair bills either. All Ive had to do is tires, oil change, CV boots, belts/pulleys and a radiator. Thats in 10 years and 110 miles of driving short trips w/ only maybe 20% highway miles.

I might get the V8 S80 volvo for her. Fast but a tank.

I have an older dump truck that I would let go. I believe one a 1979, one is a 1983, and another is 1986, take your pick. All are in excellent mechanical condition and good overall. They are easy to drive with power steering and automatic transmission. I can take photos if you would like.
