It wasn’t a “principled stand against slavery”. Their leaders thought the southern states were batshit nuts for rebelling against the USA and seceding. They wisely didn’t want to be caught in the crossfire when all the inevitable shooting started. There weren’t a lot of slaves in those western counties, but not because the citizens there had the moral high ground. It just wasn’t as profitable to own them. Too much rugged terrain out there for mass-farming of cotton or tobacco. So they didn’t really care much about the slavery issue.

I’ll admit, the thought that West Virginia was more civilized and less racist in the 1860’s than it is today is a pretty good one though. lol.
