A question of etiquette
Posted by: MrMephisto ()

During the day, you obviously cannot make eye contact and say hi to every person you pass. Nobody would get anything done. The lack of acknowledgment is acceptable.

Walking home this morning, there was literally nobody else on the sidewalks except me and a person coming towards me two blocks away. As we passed, I said, "Good morning." I got an "mmm" in response. Not the "mmm, delicious" kind of "mmm," either.

Would it have been better for me to not acknowledge this person, even though it would take a conscious effort to do so?

this person was busy concerned that you were committing an almost crime because you almost robbed and killed them. ;)

We were of different genders and races, so I can completely understand how she would think, "he acts nice, but really just wants to rape me."

None taken. If you'd like to buy me a sweet The North Face coat, I'll wear it. In the meantime, Uncle Sam said the coat I do have is warm enough.

better not to say anything. I don't even like it when people hold doors open for me, because then I'm obliged to say "thank you"......really, I could just do without that...I can open my own doors, thanks. It's nothing personal, I just like to keep my interaction with people to the absolute bare minimum.

So, after watching her walk toward you from two blocks away, and she sees you sizing her up, she decides to defuse any chance of having to strike up a conversation with you by making it clear she is not interested :)

Rude, perhaps, or maybe it was learned behavior? :)

Since it was a woman, I would assume she didn't want to engage a strange man while she was alone and no one else was around. Women see the world in a different way than we do. That said, I think you should continue being polite and say "good morning."

I wasn't entirely forthcoming in the details, as I didn't think it would get this involved, but...

1. It was dark out, and she was wearing a hoodie. I didn't even realize it was a female until her response.

2. There were a couple cars on the road, just no pedestrians. It's a very well-traveled road, so it's not like there wasn't anybody around.

3. It's not like I stared her down for two blocks, then slowed down as we passed as if I'd like to talk more. Just a quick nod and a "good mornin'."

Yeah, but I would venture to guess that unless she is a total bitch, you probably would have gotten a better response if it had been in the middle of the day with more people around.

But, if it had been during the day with more people around, I wouldn't have said anything, as stipulated in my first post.

One of the things I can't stand about going to Home Depot is that every sales associate has been trained to greet you with a disingenuous "hello". How about make sure the stock on the shelves is where it's supposed to be motherfuckers instead of distracting me from my shopping?

To the point of your post, when I take a walk in my neighborhood and I encounter a female neighbor on the sidewalk, 99% of the time I am warmly greeted. If that 1% has a bug up their ass, it's not my problem. Perhaps they are agoraphobic. I don't really care that much. It's not me, it's them.

Something I do for laughs is walk down the road with a "loving the world" smile om my face. Then when someone passes me on foot and says "Good Morning", I'll change just as quick to to scowl and say, "Good Morning?!?..Yeah, for whoooo?" Then I'll lock eyes and grit on them until they retreat.

Then I LOL and say I was only joking and give 'em a playful rib punch! Mosyt people aren't as amused as me though.

I couldn't tell. It was dark, and she was wearing a hoodie.

Next time, so there's no confusion, say "hello" by whipping it out. Then you can be fairly certain about what her reaction means.

Mr. Mephisto,

You said this encounter occurred in the morning while it was still dark. You posted at 5:13, so it was, what... 4:30 or so? If I were walking down a sidewalk at that hour and there were no other people around and I saw a man walking towards me, I would immediately walk into the road and start crossing.... with my danger antenna up and my mace or stun gun in hand.

And, if you started to cross the street, I'd probably start running, spraying my mace and stunning everything with my gun.

And, I'm a friendly person.

I agree with Loc and His Majesty...

Keep being polite. Who cares if a few frightened lambs don't reciprocate. You aren't being polite for some kind of return... Or are you, rapist?

I'm noticing more and more rudeness in my daily life... (Whatever, things change) but I found that it's made me appreciate the few that still have manners even more.

A woman walking alone at 4 o'clock in the morning should not be concerned with being polite to strangers.... unless she's a hooker.

This has nothing to do with manners or being a frightened lamb. Wow!

Yeah, I have to say as the details emerge I can see how 4:30am or so in the morning, most people are probably not on their "happy time". I am guessing she hadn't had her coffee yet - you should know better then to say hello to anyone before that time.

EDIT: As a side note, I would have said "good morning" as well.

Of course not. I don't say anything before I commit rapery. It's supposed to be a surprise, remember? (NOTE: This statement will be used against me later.)

I think what I'm going to go with is, she was not expecting me to say "good morning," and we were already past each other before she had the sense to respond appropriately. Sort of like when your waitress tell you to enjoy your food, and you tell her to do the same as she's walking away. You don't chase her down and say, "Wait, I fucked that up. I mean, thank you."

No, you just sit there in your booth, alone, with your acoustic guitar sitting across from you, and add one more thing to the long list of embarrassments that is your life. You give the waitress a 100% tip and write your phone number on the back of the receipt, hoping she secretly thought you were attractive and was impressed by your generosity.

But she doesn't call. They never, ever call. This is why you cry yourself to sleep at night.

I... Give me a moment.

> I'm noticing more and more rudeness in my daily

I'm really big on manners. I don't get into nit-picky shit like which fork to use for salad (the one on the far left. It's smaller, and has a stronger tine). But I remember who lets the door shut in my face on their way through, or watches the elevator doors close as I'm walking towards it.

Generally speaking, nefarious ne'er-do-wells don't stay a respectful distance away on their side of the sidewalk and offer pleasantries. They typically make a bee-line for you and get right to business.

If she thought I was a serial killer or something, then fuck that rude, paranoid bitch.

+1. Keep being polite in real life; you'll be a happier person for it.

What I find funny is the fake, suppressed smile that people make when you pass by them in public or at the office. It looks like they are constipated or trying to hold in a fart. Think Ernest P. Worrell looking perplexed, less the exaggeration.

That's why a bitch would cross the road before she got close enough for that bee-line maneuver.... at 4 o'clock in the morning, that is.

Yeah, fuck that rude paranoid bitch. Where have all the nice girls gone?

If you ever have a daughter, teach her the right way to behave when walking all alone at 4 o'clock in the morning.

Again, most rapists/serial killers/muggers don't say "good morning" before the rape/murder/robbery. I thought that saying "good morning" would lower concern that I'm about to pull a knife out of my pocket, but I am a trusting fool, I guess.

YESSS> Exactly.

In this area especially, people don't give a fuck about anyone but themselves, so I've given up on going out of my way for anyone who isn't related to me in some way.

Take for example the grocery stores. I've never seen so many stuck up cunts under one roof in my life. I mean, I'm looking at the tea with my cart parked next to me, FACING THE RIGHT WAY, and some crabby bitch steers her cart towards me and stops. Cart to cart, expecting me to move. Bitch, just because you want to go around the traffic jam on your side, doesn't mean I'm moving for you, get your ass back in that line with everyone else.

ORrrr, take for example the harried chick with three kids hanging off the cart and her arm. She was coming towards me and we clearly couldn't fit thru the narrow passageway together, so I politely stepped aside for her and she passes without any sort of acknowledgment. Fuck you! So I say, "oh you're welcome." And I hear her say, "pff!" What a cunt! And the ironic thing was, I had my own 5 year old next to me!

People are assholes.

Perfect example of an ingrateful bitch. I don't care what anyone looks like, if they pass me by and say hello, I'll say hello back. No excuses for that sort of rudeness.

That's what's starting to irritate me about this area. When we were a smaller community, people were a lot warmer. Nowadays though, I can be walking up the wide-open path near my house (Part of which runs alongside a major thoroughfare, with a lot of people using it to walk to the shopping center), and when I say "Hi" to someone, they look at me like I'm out of my mind. One time I even said "Hi" to a gentleman who was walking with his family, as I was jogging by. He looked at me like I was a potential mugger or something. I mean, wtf, there he was with his wife, baby, and a big dog, and he can't even manage a "Hi" or "How's it going?" in reply? It was broad daylight too. I don't even want to imagine what'll happen if I say "Hello" to a person walking alone at night.

On the other hand, some of the friendliest people whom I've run into on the path, were younger couples who've obviously moved here recently. Hell, even the Admiral next door would manage a greeting to me at 2300 Hrs as he ran by on his evening jog, despite the fact that I didn't recognize him at first, and my big dog was initially barking and lunging toward him lol.

Btw, I spent part of Spring Break in Myrtle Beach, SC a couple of years ago with my folks (I have some fam currently down there). We went to Wilmington, NC to check-out the place, because they're definitely looking for potential areas to move to in the future. Anyways, just driving down a nice, random neighborhood on our lil' tour of Wilmington, we were waved at by everyone who passed us, and even the neighborhood dog ran out to greet us, even though we'd never been there before. I couldn't believe it, I thought that I was suddenly in the Land of Oz or something.

A hoodie? Are you sure it was a girl? I just got word that the "Reston Rapist" is back in NoVa, and he loves to rock hoodies on paths at night.

A woman walking alone at 4 o'clock in the morning doesn't have the luxury of being a trusting fool. Along with manners, and believe me, my parents were BIG on that, we girls were also taught safety. We were taught NOT to walk alone at 4 o'clock in the morning, but if alone on a sidewalk in the middle of the night and a man is approaching from the opposite direction, the wise thing for a woman to do is cross the street.

Now, Mr. Mephisto, if I were to pass you on an empty sidewalk in daylight, I would probably smile and say good morning to you. And, I don't mumble or look down because I was taught to make good eye contact.

To Harry: I am not a frightened little lamb. Take that back.

Sounds like you are arguing that she was... frightened... am I reading it wrong?

Oh Alias, I know you're not a frightened little lamb. I would never think of you that way... I wasn't even thinking of you when I made the lamb comment.

But, now that you mention it, if you were a lamb, I wouldn't mind viewing a few risque video clips of you and your pregnant owner.

Throwing lolkatz at people is not saying hello, Elle! Although it would solicit a response the likes of which no morning espresso has ever seen. (The new *bucks Trenta might give it a run for it's money, though)

Ah. Your argument makes sense now. Of COURSE she should have crossed the 4 lanes + median necessary to get her out of harm's reach. Because I acted with the most malicious of intentions.

Tell your daughter to trust a stranger on a deserted sidewalk at 4 o'clock in the morning based on the stranger's non-threatening body language and the stranger's non-confrontational.... "good morning".

Moron.

Good morning, Meeper.

note to Mr. Mephisto: Women are far more polite to strangers when the sun is up.

This is an interesting thread.

Mr. Mephisto starts the thread, calling it "A question of etiquette". Mr. Mephisto is concerned with good manners, pointing out his example of a woman who didn't respond "properly" to his kind salutation on an empty sidewalk at 4 o'clock in the morning.

When I explained how I, as a woman, was trained to cross the street should I find myself in the same situation, Mr. Mephisto calls me an idiot; actually, he calls me a paranoid idiot. Does he stop and try to imagine, for a moment, that a woman might have to view the world slightly differently than a man? Did he say something like .... it's too bad that we live in a world where it can be dangerous for a woman to walk alone in the middle of the night? Did he respect the fact that I and most of the girls I grew up with, were taught this same "cross the street" rule?

No. Instead he took it personally. He defended himself, smugly lecturing that a woman should be able to determine his character by his non-threatening body language.

I'm sorry that Mr. Mephisto is angry that many women, especially those of us who grew up in large metropolitan areas, were taught some of these basic skills but I don't see where that warrants name calling on his part. Maybe, Mr. Mephisto isn't really concerned with good manners at all, but was just pissed off that a woman didn't respond to him in the manner to which he thinks he deserves.

This is not about whether or not it was a man or a woman. Gender is an irrelevant detail in this instance; if you read my original post, the person whose etiquette I was looking for clarification on was my own. Would it have been more rude to acknowledge this person, or make a conscious effort to do so?

See above.

You're right, and I apologize. That was uncalled for on my part.

You're the one bringing the danger and gender into it. I just wanted to know if I should have said anything, or turned my nose up and ignore them.

> No. Instead he took it personally. He defended

That's not "being safe," that's "having poor social skills."

Who said anything about me being angry? I said above that I'm going to assume that she was caught off-guard, since clearly politeness is going out of style.

> Maybe, Mr. Mephisto

Again, read the thread. If it had been a white male, I would have asked the same question: to greet or not to greet. I will not apologize for being polite, though.

I'm keeping in mind that you're the same person who claims to live in Richmond, and is involved with a sex clinic seeking participants on Fairfax Underground for a study. I doubt you're serious about the "Holy shit it's a male, cross the road to avoid rape" mentality.

Damn, the weirdos strike again in my neighborhood.

WOW, the people around here are getting stranger every year. I was just outside walking my JRT (A real nice, friendly dog). She growled all of the sudden, and it turned out that two people were coming our way walking their dog (A good sized dog, 40-60lbs.). As they passed us, I said "Hi", and they just stared at me like I was the local neighborhood serial killer or something. So they walked on up the street, and that is where I was headed anyways. I let them walk up first, to put some distance between the two of us, and then followed. My dog and I made it to the neighbors' lawn, and she started her business (Where most of our dogs usually go, and yes, I pick up after them). As she was going, out pop the two girls/ladies with their dog, from behind a row of bushes at the top of my other neighbors yard (Which is our sled hill). These people then walk by us again, without saying a word, and off they do down past our house again, and down the street to God knows where.

Seriously, they're staring at me like I'm weird for saying "Hi" on the street at night, yet here they are, snooping around beind the bushes in my neighbors yard? They were even wearing winter parkas too, despite the fact that it's warm outside, and raining. Wtf? Too bad my neighbor didn't have his three German Shepherds out at that moment.

I only had my kazoo on me at the time, or I totally would have.

Last night, as I was walking to the store, there was nobody on the sidewalk but me and a black guy coming the other direction. As we passed, he said, "How you doin', dude?"

I said, "I'm well, thank you! And yourself?"

"Doin' fine, doin' fine."

So apparently, I'm not the only one who does that.

I walk down the streets
past drugstores and hospitals and
theatres and cafes
and I wonder if he is there.

I have looked almost half a century
and he has not been seen.

a living man, truly alive,
say when he brings his hands down
from lighting a cigarette
you see his eyes
like the eyes of a tiger staring past
into the wind.

but when the hands come down
it is always the
other eyes
that are there
always always.

Thank you! That was actually good (even though it was just an excerpt).

You know... I was just thinking about you today. I heard one of our many songs on the radio and- well, you can fill in the blanks, I'm sure.

I became aware of your apparent absence and began meditating, trying to uncover the reason for it.

I reached no real epiphany but, sometimes, it's the process that is the reward.

ANNOUNCEMENT

In light of information recently brought to my attention, I have decided not to go forward with my complaint regarding Tuttle award irregularities.

Besides which, the red tape involved was tedious and the multitude of purposely confusing forms to complete was overwhelming. And, there was the bureaucrat in the council office who smugly insinuated that I might be over reacting. That’s when I, always dignified, calmly told him to ......... have a nice day.

Did the bureaucrat ask you for a 27b(stroke)6?

I hope to, one day, award you a Tuttle, Alias.

Now that you mention it, I think he might have.
