Gay Rights at the Prom
Posted by: eesh ()

Anybody keeping up with this story? Two girls at a Mississippi high school wanted to be each others' date at the prom, so the school canceled the prom rather than let those two be seen together.

Now various gay rights groups and the ACLU have taken up her cause. She also got a 30k scholarship when she appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Seems like the school opened up a Pandora's box.

How were you able to get away with bringing a male date to the prom, eesh?

The "official" Prom has been canceled but I understand the kids are having their
own private parties in a No Muff Munch Zone.

The girls were dumb. All they had to do was each find a guy to bring with them, then once they got to the Prom, they could break off and dance/chill with eachother instead.

I think you mean principle, correct?

I'm sure it started out as principle, but after all this spotlight, they will surely become attention whores.

The girls are self-centered brats.

The school was stupid to give them the attention they sought.

Ellen DeGeneres was stupid to hand out 30 grand.

But, if that's all it takes to get Ellen to pay for college.......

daughter... you are now a lesbian Muslim from Mississippi, dating a hermaphrodite.

That should take care of graduate school, too..

"I'm going to school tomorrow (Wednesday) and will get a feel of how everybody feels about me. That will help me make my decision about whether I'm going to the private prom," McMillen said. "I want to go because all my junior and senior class will be there, but I don't want to be somewhere I'm not welcomed."

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100323/ap_on_re_us/us_lesbian_prom_date

Wait, wait, wait. So, she'll take the school to court and get the ACLU to sue the district to hold the prom so she can go, but if they're not cool with her at the "private prom," no biggie?

She could have saved herself a lot of aggravation by adopting that attitude early on. TPL got it right; just find two gay guys to go with, then swap dates when you're there. Everyone wins.

would you be more upset if you were thrown in jail without trial or possibly being thrown in jail after getting a trial?

it's the possibility that makes the difference. people dont play the lottery because there is no chance they will ever "hit the jackpot." hope is a powerful thing because without hope there is only despair.

I get what you're saying, but this isn't about hope. She didn't "hope" she could go to the prom, she actively fought to go to the prom on her terms.

I'll try my best to explain what I mean, but I'm probably going to fuck it up.

She claims she wants to go to the prom because all of her classmates are going to be there. If that's true, then her objective was, "attend the prom." There are numerous ways she could have done so, and still spent an evening of magic and wonder with her girlfriend.

Instead, her objective was, "attend the prom with my lesbian girlfriend dressed in a tuxedo." She's failed to achieve that objective, and caused the prom to be canceled for everyone in the process. If school policy needs to be changed to accommodate her, she should have worked on getting the policy changed first.

It would be like calling the DC police and saying, "I want to carry a concealed weapon in your city, and if you refuse to let me, I'll call the ACLU and we'll make you allow it."

actually, the first thing she did was ask. but the hope i was referring to was acceptance by her peers at the prom.

no worries, you've already hit that point. ;P

you suggesting subterfuge and that is not a good thing.

that is such a huge fucking load of bullshit.
  1. the principal canceled the prom, you cannot blame someone for the actions of another. ("she was cheating on me so i had to stab her to death!" <-- NO!)
  2. a system that does not want to be changed can only be changed via legal battles, bribery, coercion, mass uprising, public humiliation or subversion.

my understand is that she asked first and was denied via cancellation. when the "word" got out about this it got attention then media attention then the arms of rights groups started flailing at decided to take them to court.

your analogy is flawed.

Here's the deal.

The girl - first off - was not trying to get the acceptance of her peers. She obviously already had that for the "peers' that she cared about. As Meph stated, she and her BFF could have gotten dates and attended, and then been with each other regardless, attended the prom without much incident other then a few oohs and aahs. And seriously, it isn't like women/girls don't dance with other women/girls all the time so other then some kind of overt make out session in the middle of the dance floor, they would have been able to attend the prom without a problem. Also, I am sure they both could have come in dresses without a faux boyfriend on their arm and accomplished the same thing. So attending the prom was never an issue.

On the other hand we have the tuxedo. So the presumption here is that the "male" partner wanted to dress up as a guy and attend the event. So they go the principal, and ask if this is possible. They are told no - school policy/yada yada yada, whatever. Then they force the issue and make it clear that is how they want to attend, and if they are not allowed to attend in that way, then they are going to call foul on the school. The principal, deciding that the easiest way to avoid a lawsuit, is to cancel the entire event so as not to put the school in the position of having to refuse her and her BFF - instead they refuse everyone, and treat them all equally.

Sure, the school could/should have allowed them to attend with the tuxedo - but, for whatever reason, felt it would be controversial regardless their choice. Probably they had angry parents/students on the other side saying they were not happy with the possibility, etc. Not every place is San Francisco, or NY City, or Washington, DC, etc.

But this was about the girl and her BFF making a statement. It wasn't about her acceptance by classmates - it might be now, because as a result of her actions in pushing the issue she got the prom canceled for everyone. I imagine if they didn't have much of an opinion of her before she pushed her cause, most of them do now.

a distinct possibility.

anyway, that was a good analysis of the situation.
