Who knows. There is no provision in the US Constitution for a State to cede. This means that succession is not allowed. To be somewhat legal and legit, a State government would have to ask that question to the US Supreme Court. I too do not like Obamacare and I am enlightened to see that not only Virginia, but other States are beginning to gear up for the legal challenge once der Fuhrer's socialist measure passes. I also have a feeling that when it passes, there will me mass demonstrations in DC.

Let's see. In the US the colonies/states voluntarily joined the Union. In the Soviet Union, a totalitarian regime took over a country by force. Hmmmm.

Who cares - the point is we are still the "United States" because we share common cause, interests, etc. The reasons for the original Civil War were much and varied, but in the end devolved down to the Federal Government (via the election of Northern representatives and President) dictating polices that they didn't agree with, and did not feel was in their national interest. They had a coalition of sorts, as they were all designated as "Slave States" and decided to, as a group, secede. We can sit and argue as to the eventual legal status determined by their losing the war, but in all reality, if they had won the war we would be having a different discussion (obviously). It is still likely slavery would have been abandoned as an institution over time, but back then it carried such a huge economic impact - not to mention the monetary losses incurred, that it was something folks were willing to fight for.

I don't support any of what those folks believed back then - I merely point out that given enough "motivation" from perceived threats, or economic issues, it is pretty stupid to say it can't happen "just because". It doesn't have to be militias that cause the problem either, or make the declaration.

Quote

It presents to the whole family of man the question whether a constitutional republic or democracy -- a Government of the people, by the same people -- can or cannot maintain its territorial integrity against its own domestic foes. It presents the question whether discontented individuals, too few in numbers to control administration, according to organic law, in any case, can always, upon the pretenses made in this case, or on any other pretenses, or arbitrarily without any pretense, break up their Government and thus practically put an end to free government upon the earth. It forces us to ask: "Is there, in all republics, this inherent and fatal weakness?" "Must a government, of necessity, be too strong for the liberties of its own people, or too weak to maintain its own existence?

Abraham Lincoln, Special Session Message, 1861.

If things like health care, cap and trade, or running up the debt to a point where monetary policies are affected, or the dollar collapses, etc. I wouldn't be surprised to hear more of this - especially if the Federal government continues on the merry course of spending money they don't have. Legal challenges are coming to all of what is going on these days - in particular from Virginia. Virginia has declared federally mandated health insurance payments illegal, and 37 States are looking at the same legislation. So hopefully the legal process will play out and everyone will abide by the outcomes. But that doesn't mean it "can't happen" - just because. Is it likely? No.

Sure, why not, anything is better than the communistic socialism thats coming our way. This idiot was elected by college kids, union thugs and lazy welfare for life losers who expect a free ride on the backs of those that actually work.Closed door meetings in the name of "transparency",special back room deals for cronies, bailouts, takeovers, outright bribery of a corrupt administration for "the good of all".Nah I don't need that or want that, nor do I want to sacrifice the next multiple generations trying to pay back the runaway debt that does no good anywhere, except to line the pockets of fanatical organizations and apologetic trips abroad. If you read history, the souht lost because of ONE day,we won't make that mistake again. The brainwashed masses of "feed me,cloth me give me a house,a job, make me rich for doing nothing" is not what this coutry is founded on.I can't think of one promise that has been kept, one deadline that has been met. They operate outside the laws and re-write them or ignore them at will.No need to look for weapons of mass destruction, they are alive and well in Washington.if we can't take the country back, maybe its time we formed a new one based on principles.

Possibly, but not before it caused issues in the western states, which could have resulted in three or four weakened countries in what we now know as the U.S.

I'm not saying "just because." I'm saying that there is historic precedent and anyone with half a brain would realize there is more to lose than gain from secession.

. But that doesn't mean it
> "can't happen" - just because. Is it likely? No.

I'm not saying it "can't happen." I'm saying it would be incredibly idiotic to let it happen.

I might also point out that all of the states (and commonwealths) signed onto the Constitution with the understanding that there was no "exit clause" in the Constitution. In the easiest terms, "buyer beware." Maybe the Founding Fathers should have thought of it, but it's too late now.

Well, if it's going to happen, it's going to be as Registered Voter alluded. The US is precariously close to economic collapse. Just as the USSR was, due to their crazy weapons spending and wars (ironically, Afghanistan played a large part). It could reach a point where the state governments will need to assume control, just like they did in the former soviet union. Basically, the federal government can't cope and relinquishes power back to the states.

Bush never made any promises of transparency - over and over again. Obama has not shown any brilliance in foreign policy AT ALL - although Biden was supposed to raise the intelligence factor there right? What a brain-trust he turned out to be.

This administration smacks of worse hypocrisy and corruption then any Republican who ever made an argument for "family values".

I do not look forward to a possible civil war, however small the chance. The facts taken as a whole and using a little insight to how we are as a people, it is possible to see this started several years ago. Not a civil war in a classic sense, but a division of the people. Two or more opposed sides, each with their own views, agendas and values. The only common denominator being we all are united States.

That said, take 2000. Gore v Bush. The country was at a standstill in politics while Chad's were in debate. Legal feuds and eventual spin from the loser that carried through the winners term.

Less than a year into Bush's first term we had the 9-11 attack, which also had an interesting effect, for we as a country put aside differences after the attack. I said back then, it sure would be nice if this could last. It didn't.

2004. The divide was not as great, but still there.

2008. Once again the country was divided fairly even on the vote and this divide continues today.

The 2008 election became vitriol in attacks of character and other various matters, which is politics. The problem being the larger complainants have a valid point, even if muted.

Why has Obama gone to such lengths to hide his various matters of school, finance and play down associations? Many of these more unsavory associates are advisers and office holders now. Seems a valid set of issues for some to be concerned about, as it is the first time in our lives we have had an almost entirely un-vetted person in office. We know very little about this man, other than what he has told us. That is an awful lot of trust placed.

As the current legislature continues to ram bills and the POTUS uses EO's for convenience, the alarm to many is ringing.

Should this path continue as it currently is, it has already been noted the 2012 election cycle will likely see a huge turnover of representatives.

A victory for some, but the checks and balances are weak and we have a situation were agendas are being thrust at breakneck speed to make fundamental change. What can an new representative really do about so many changes prior to there term and remain in office themselves? Not much on the short term.

The slim but real chance for acted out divisions, rather than ideological disputes, may just come down to the Constitution. If those who circumvent it now obtain more strength, it will continue to mute the founding document that grants our charter of what we can and cannot do as a people and country.

As the obscene twisting of the Constitution continues, the belief it is out of date and out of touch will spread laying a path to putting the document away as merely a historic marker. Dark days will follow until reason comes back to the people. The problem isn't the Constitution, its those who circumvent or abuse its powers.

That is what I see as a slim chance of violence.

It is hard to see how our lazy society could ever become that active, yet consider one thing. A hungry person will go to great lengths to get fed. If resources are rationed, people still have to eat. Both figuratively and truly.

I truly do not want to see ANY violence. I prefer lively debate and legal actions. So, while I do not care for the current POTUS, I want to see him either quit or finish his 1 term and just go away. Ignorance by faith alone elected him. Fine. Finish and go away.

easy.

Education.

Healthcare.

Two easy examples of matters not specifically granted to the Fed to handle, therefore a Twisting or maybe better, disregard of the Constitution.

Education was years ago, but Healthcare is now.

If one looks at the Bill of Rights and the 10th Amendment...

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

Neither issue is a United States issue, but something for the States, unless States decline and offer it to the US to handle. It seems a majority of states are NOT interested in the US handling healthcare, so the US is in violate of the 10th amendment.

Its a sticky issue to be sure and does ignite fiery debate.

From my view, do what we will so long as it is framed with our Constitution and Bill of Rights as guide.

So to enact a United States healthcare initiative, just get states to grant that right to the Fed and we are good.

Ahh yes the Patriot Act. It too was questionable in some ways. The US has a mandate to protect our people, so on that front it was valid. It was some provisions in that Bill that were farther reaching and should have been knocked out.

It was a poorly drafted bill.

So, what you are saying is the Admin of the collective states has no responsibility to protect the individual states? It is the fundamental core of what the fed is to do. Granted, it is not to go to other countries as we do, but to protect us, yes.

If it gets passed, the pubs will have four years to stop the implementation. Lobbyists and congressional staffs on both sides will be tied up with this legislation, not to mention the states and the courts.

That's a pretty unrealistic scenario. Most of the states that would clamor for this, the Alabamas, Mississippis, etc, of the country, would be totally fucked if they were independent of New York, California, New England, etc. And regardless, splitting up the country wouldn't change the fact that if the US defaults on its obligations, no one is going to lend to us...whether you are talking about the Federal government or fragmented states.

America is still a force to be reckoned with when it is the United States. Russia is weaker today because it is not the Soviet Union. The other Soviet states are weaker because of it.

Even the lib Kristol predicts repeal in 2013.

You are in denial.

This is bad for Virginia.

This is bad for the Union.

38 States are in process to challenge.

Either it is repealed or the Union breaks.

Our Republic will not allow this to stand.

Read the Constitution for some insight.

You might figure it out on your own.

You are intellectually dishonest. You don't understand the Constitution nor reality. You whine and bitch and moan. America made its decision in electing President Obama and did so decisively. He, unlike Bush and his traitors, have been so far upfront, and is doing what he said he would do.

Where were you 8 years ago when "our freedoms" were being taken away? Where were you when we INVADED another country. That's right, invaded, because Iraq did not attack us, we attacked them. Where was your bitch ass when billions and billions (over 10 million lost in one day, all cash all gone - That's 10 million in cash on a pallet - 10 fricken million, just gone) disappeared. Where was your sniveling ass during Wall Street, Tarp, and the dozens of other cronyisms to the rich and powerful at the expense of the average person.

I'll tell you - you were in your chair with your two little fingers wrapped around your pud. Your "Constitutional" issues suddenly did not come to the foreground, it started with the election of a black man. You don't have the intellectual honesty to admit it. Now put those white sheets back on and go back to your trailer.

Not that he supports the US falling into chaos and ruin...it's just a thought! LOL...republican cowards always fall behind their hypotheticals while promoting chaos and hate. It is time for the Republican party to either act responsibly or be banned.

Russian Professor Predicts Fall of U.S. in 2010
Monday, December 29, 2008

Print ShareThisMOSCOW — For a decade, Russian academic Igor Panarin has been predicting the U.S. will fall apart in 2010. Now he's found an eager audience: Russian state media, who are interviewing him twice a day.

A polite and cheerful man with a buzz cut, Professor Panarin insists he does not dislike Americans. But he warns that the outlook for them is dire.

"There's a 55-45 percent chance right now that disintegration will occur," says Panarin. "One could rejoice in that process," he adds, poker-faced. "But if we're talking reasonably, it's not the best scenario — for Russia."

Prof. Panarin, 50 years old, is not a fringe figure. A former KGB analyst, he is dean of the Russian Foreign Ministry's academy for future diplomats. He is invited to Kremlin receptions, lectures students, publishes books, and appears in the media as an expert on U.S.-Russia relations.

Mr. Panarin posits, in brief, that mass immigration, economic decline, and moral degradation will trigger a civil war next fall and the collapse of the dollar. Around the end of June 2010, or early July, he says, the U.S. will break into six pieces — with Alaska reverting to Russian control.

They're called "elections", and yes, anything can be repealed through the use of the almighty "Vote".

Intellectually dishonest? That's a big phrase coming from such a little person.
Do you know what it means f**got?

You are a f*cking idiot. Perspective??? You can't see past your own tea-bagging
partner. I guess you need the socialist environment to pay for your aids related health care since it's a pre-existing condition. You also need the support of every other perverted minority to make you feel better about yourself. You don't deserve to feel better. You're a looser. You're folks were right, You will know it soon. Just wait and watch.

Big word for such a small man. Aren't you the one posting about how China is going to be the shining example to the rest of the world? Where do your sympathies lie V? Doesn't seem like you have much love for America at all.

I actually served my country - what did you do again? Right.

You didn't get mad when the Supreme Court stopped a legal recount and appointed a President.

You didn't get mad when Cheney allowed Energy company officials to dictate energy policy.

You didn't get mad when a covert CIA operative got outed.

You didn't get mad when the Patriot Act got passed.

You didn't get mad when we illegally invaded a country that posed no threat to us.

You didn't get mad when we spent over 600 billion(and counting) on said illegal war.

You didn't get mad when over 10 billion dollars just disappeared in Iraq.

You didn't get mad when you saw the Abu Grahib photos.

You didn't get mad when you found out we were torturing people.

You didn't get mad when the government was illegally wiretapping Americans.

You didn't get mad when we didn't catch Bin Laden.

You didn't get mad when you saw the horrible conditions at Walter Reed.

You didn't get mad when we let a major US city drown.

You didn't get mad when the deficit hit the trillion dollar mark.

You finally got mad when... when... wait for it... when the government decided that people in America deserved the right to see a doctor if they are sick.

Yes, illegal wars, lies, corruption, torture, stealing your tax dollars to make the rich richer, are all OK with you, but helping other Americans...

Have we that about right?

Forgive me if I don't trust your judgment on when to panic.
