Texting rudeness
Posted by: Annoyed ()
Date: March 10, 2010 01:01PM

I've been thinking that as the newness of texting wore off, most people would probably remember that it isn't okay to ignore a person you are with, in favor of idly chatting with someone who isn't. Now I'm starting to think I may have been wrong about that. The problem seems worst in groups of people, which bothers me less, but I have some friends who just can't seem to put the damn phone down, even when engaged in one-on-one conversation.

I've tried a few techniques for dealing with this, the most effective being that I stop talking in mid-sentence as soon as they start. When they eventually notice and say 'Go ahead, I'm listening,' I just respond 'That's okay, I'll wait till you finish.' I repeat this as necessary.

I'm considering walking the next time it happens. Just standing up, settling my bill if we're out, and telling the offender to give me a call when it's more convenient.

Anybody have other strategies that they find work well?

I try not to be so boring that the person who I'm with starts texting instead of paying attention to our conversation. Seems to work pretty well.

That's my fall-back strategy if all else fails.

Unfortunately, texting isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and the distracted, obnoxious people driving aren't either.

I think people tend to do this because it seems on the surface to be less rude than making a phone call. It's not, it just seems less disruptive to the situation since they aren't making noise I guess. It's only getting worse now that everyone has iPhones and such. You are fighting a losing battle, I'm afraid.

What's worse is when people answer their cell phone in the middle of a conversation and begin to have a discussion. I think that shit pisses me off more than the texting.

Or, going back to the bitchy people at Starbucks, the people that get a phone call right as they reach the counter and hold up their finger to the cashier as if no one else is in line.

People using blackberries in meetings are obnoxious as well.

Trust me, I don't have friends who type in all caps. But, as I recently told a friend who frequently does this, it is optional for us to hang out. If whoever you are texting with is more interesting, then by all means please do go.

First off, quit hanging around my wife. I assume you are, because she does this. It's so fucking annoying. I do what you do - stop what I'm doing and tell her to let me know when she's able to focus on what's going on in front of her. It seems to work - until the next time. :-)

Secondly, another thing that annoys me is when people have a secondary conversation when on the phone. Again my wife will have these side conversations with her co-workers when I call to ask her something. I just hang up. Then she'll call back and ask "why did you hang up?" - and I answer "you were busy talking to someone else, it can wait until I get home. Later". It seems to work until she falls off the wagon a few days later.

Technology has made people rude.

technology has done nothing to make people rude. what it has done is offered them new ways to be rude. your wife is rude, dont blame it on technology.

Gravis - not only has it given them more ways to be rude, it's given them easier ways to be rude. Going with the texting rudeness theme of this thread - having that "almost instant" communication technology in your pocket makes it easier to simply be careless with manners and not maliciously/consciously rude.

Back when people communicated only by lan line phones, if you got a phone call while talking to someone in person, you would say "excuse me, I have to take this" or make the phone call wait until you finished with your conversation. You weren't getting any phone calls at a restaurant, at the grocery, or at a meeting. Now people are just to quick to pull a phone out of their pocket and take a call or send a text. Why? Because it's actually harder NOT to communicate. I see people in meetings all the time emailing, texting, or answering phone calls. It's crazy.

I personally don't care as long as the person is actually still paying attention. The technology was made so we could remain in constant communication with each other. Multi-tasking has become a way of life.

If my phone buzzes while I'm talking to someone, I have to resist the urge to pull it out and look at it immediately. I'd bet a lot people do that often enough when they're NOT in a conversation that it just becomes habit.

If I'm comfortable with the person I'm talking to, and we're not discussing anything serious or important, I'll check and respond if the message is more important than what we're talking about. I don't think if it's rude if a friend texts while we're just bullshitting.

If I was on a date, I wouldn't even look at my phone in the middle of a conversation. My opinion of my date would drop if she did.

I will check my phone but usually just put it into voicemail. If it's my wife, I may answer it just to make sure it's not an emergency and then tell her I will call her back. If I do need to take the call, I excuse myself and leave the room instead of having a conversation in front of the person I was just talking to.

I thought we were talking about just texting. Yeah, you don't interrupt one conversation to have another right in the middle.

People in grocery stores, loudly talking on their cell phones, while standing right next to me, in the produce area......that drives me crazy.

I'm trying to think, do I need tomatoes, how much garlic do I have, but cell mouth- that's what I call them- won't let me think.

Here's what I do. I start humming and half singing, in a distracted, I don't realize I'm singing kind of way...and, at the same volume as cell mouth.

Usually, cell mouth moves away. Sometimes, though, cell mouth looks at me as if I'm the one with the problem.

Bluetooth headsets for cell phones have made it so you can't tell who the street people are anymore unless you are downwind of them. You can never tell if the guy walking past you talking in a loud, animated voice is a loon, or just angry at someone on the phone. To all intents unless you see the blue light shining in their ear - you would never know.

In a drama that turned more lively than the one on screen -- "Shutter Island" -- the boyfriend allegedly attacked and stabbed the "shusher" in the neck with a meat thermometer. Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said the stabbing occured Saturday during a screening of the Martin Scorsese film.

LOL I fucking hate people that talk or text while watching a movie. You just paid $10 to watch a movie, there is no need to be on your phone.

People talking during a movie.
The chewing sounds of the talkers taking a popcorn break.
The crinkling static from someone behind me unwrapping candy.
People laughing when something isn't funny.
People standing up to leave, the moment a movie ends...blocking my view of the credits.

The list goes on.

I have a hard time in movie theatres.

so it is now common practice to bring meat thermometers to the movies these days? you guys just completely ignored it like you see it everyday, strange.

i am a fairly patient and understanding person. if somebody feels the need to text or talk during our conversation i let it go. it used to bother me, and my old method was to talk really quickly and when they would half assedly mumble 'what was that?' i would just continue on like they were a part of the conversation.

a persons IQ is directly related to their fascination with their cell phone.

ever see people endlessly scrolling through their phone and thinking they look like they are doing something important. lol

my conclusion was that the rude and violent couple were from ghettosburg. methinks in prison, this guy learned that anything an everything is a weapon.

At least you get to see your inconsiderate friend. One of my best friends has recently turned into a coochy whipped bitch, and he's ignoring all of his friends now. Two of us were joking about one of his photos on FB yesterday, leaving funny comments like we used to always do. Instead of replying this time though, he came online, changed his status to "In a relationship with...", and he deleted all of his photos. Yeah...

LOL, of course I do. It's the best way to keep in touch with my old classmates, and to connect with some networks (Especially with deployed MIL whom I know). I'm not the type of person who updates and narrates every 5 minutes of my life on there though.
