What was Fairfax like back in the 1970's?

I'm picturing something like out of Dukes of Hazzard meets GoodTimes . Lots of C &W bars, Confederate flags, and women with cut offs. Negroes knew their place. Must have been heaven!

No, not everything was linked to politics or race. Some whites didn’t even know negroes had a place.

It was even better in the 60s. High rises and apartment complexes like Southern Towers were nearly all white, filled with single women whose height and weight were proportional and no tattoos. The parties usually began on Friday nite and could run to time to go to work on Monday morning. Road Houses like Hunters Lodge, Social Circle and Hillbilly Heaven catered to a different but still fun crowd.

Large tracks of woods existed between Springfield and Fairfax City and places like Manassas and Centreville were backwaters with not that many more people than cows.

This was all before politicians of both parties decided flooding the County with blacks and the third world was in your best interest.

You remember the days when your family would take road trip for vacation and your dad would say, “let’s check out the local color”, and make a inner city detour, you never had to worry about gettin jacked, it was such an exciting part of the trip, you just can’t do that inner city exploration anymore.
If the locals don’t get ya, BLM, or Antifa(if you’re that whitey) will.

Because of Meade, there are more welfare recipients.

Spot on, Sparks. A miss the sleepy little county I grew up in. Teachers in high school told us if we fucked up, your choices were the military, construction or the federal government. Scared the shit out of us.

If it seemed like all those new housing developments springing up in Fairfax County in the sixties were almost entirely white, that is because they mostly were. Until the passage of the Fair Housing Act mortgage companies were permitted to take the demographic mix of a development into consideration in deciding whether to make housing loans. Many home lenders would 'redline' neighborhoods where blacks were living and refuse to give mortgages on homes purchased there.

There were still a large number of blacks living in Fairfax County. Except for those blacks who could buy their homes for cash, most lived in historically black communities. These were quite often former farms owned by black farmers that were subdivided. Wealthier blacks then tended to live closer in, either DC or Alexandria.

Even in the sixties there were some Asians and Hispanics. The first third world invasion of Fairfax County started in the seventies when large numbers of Vietnamese started moving into older developments in Fairfax and Arlington. Before that the 'invaders' were people from the northeast and Midwest.

Women would burn their bras regularly over at the park. Mini skirts were great, not as many fat people as today. If you were a fat kid in school you were a target, today if you are a slim kid you are target. Didn't have stupid stuff like giving "Nice Try" trophies in events. How do they hell if a guy gave it a nice try? You know if a guy wins or comes in second, that is obvious; but to know if a guy "gave it his best" is subjective. I hate that stuff.

You can walk down ur high school halls and grab a girls ass without being called a rapist and womanizer. The girl may smack you back, or play around, but you weren’t called a rapist, maybe a creep

Lived in Springfield all through the 70s. Nice enough, lot of good memories, but by the end of high school I was bored to death and ready to move on. Took off six months after graduation and never looked back.

See I was in an already semi liberal region. The shit you have now started for us in the 80’s, but people were cool back then, so chillin with liberals was alright. Forget about it now.

I was too busy with a young family during the 70s, but do remember during the 60s a friend after too much partying in Georgetown 'fell asleep' at a light on Columbia Pike and the cop told him to lock it up and gave him a ride to his front door. Good times!

The Village Inn on Duke St. drew a standing room only crowd on Sunday nights with a black dude playing pop on a keyboard. The place was a big draw for residents from Shirley Duke Apts to Landmark.

For getting laid midweek, it was hard to top 1320 Club on RT1.

Monte Ralph Rissel embarked on his serial killing spree in Alexandria in the mid 70s. The entire region was shocked to it's core, as serial killers were still a relatively new concept and phenomenon in those days.

Prior to the 60s, the majority of Fairfax County and NoVa as a whole was rural farmland. A young man was arrested in the early 70s for terrorizing non-locals who were moving into the suburban developments popping up around his town. He wasn't alone in his hostility- most of the locals in the then sleepy town of Burke saw the increasing suburban sprawl as worrisome. The young man would dress up in a bunny costume, and vandalize the homes and cars of the encroaching yuppies. This was where the criminal in the bunny suit part of the Bunny Man Bridge urban legend came from. Cool history!

Everything was better 30 years ago.
It really was.
