Meade might have to end up on the streets before he actually realizes he needs to change to have any sort of future.

God helps those who help themselves. At this point in life, Meade has even found excuses to quit attending Church. He must accept that fact he has failed miserably doing things his way. His way doesn't work. Meade must ask that he is shown a way that will work and then he must be willing to work for it.

A stint in the Salvation Army would be the hand up he needs at this point.

He already owns a Santa Costume.
