Unfortunately, free college education in the US sounds like a joke because this seems impossible. I'll be extremely glad if it is the truth but I don't see any moves toward this. If it's truly free, then it won't be worth anything since everyone can have it. It would turn into a complete clusterfuck.

If it's not free but simply paid for by someone else, then it will be very restrictive. As it is, for example, in France where only a very few people are admitted to medical schools.

So the only way that it really works is that if it's made "free" then most can't have it.

We just need to get the professors to teach for the love of teaching and not for money.

What would that help ? If everyone could get free college and get a masters would mean nothing more than a high school diploma means now. No employer would care

What you describe is the German system. University is for the top-15% of students, with a tranche below that going to technical schools. Lay a regime like this on the US, and the racial make-up of the college crowd would look like we were practicing segregation again - it would never fly. Of course, mentioning this is hard to do in a politically correct society, but it would be a significant problem.

By the way, the real problem with university in the United States is that our K-12 education system prepares far too few for true college work. Making college "free" would likely make that problem worse. Rigor and results matter.

Same in France and many other countries. See, these are the pesky little details that libs don't like to talk about. Or have even thought about. Just like health care you can't make something free on an unqualified basis and have everyone doing it. The costs don't work. The crush of people doesn't work.
Etc., etc. Which means that you need to start filtering people out. Which means that you then end up with an even more exclusive and restrictive system. Free college doesn't mean that everyone gets to go for free.

Isn't that the way the system works. We design an educational regime to make sure kids are informed and prepared for the world. We then create a certificate to verify that the kids have completed this educational regime. Employers recognize the value of having well informed and prepared workers, so they give preferences to holders of these certificates for hiring. Then people who haven't gotten the certificates start arguing that they should also be awarded the certificates so they can have the same employment opportunities, even though they haven't done the work to be informed and prepared. We lower the standards for the certificate. Employers start recognizing that the certificate no longer means people are informed and prepared, so they demand an additional layer of education. And the process repeats itself.
