The location of the magnetic north pole is updated one year early due to its increasingly rapid movement toward Siberia from the Canadian Arctic at a rate of 55 kilometers (34 miles) per year.

Updated model coefficients are released at 5-year intervals, with WMM2015 (released Dec 15, 2014) supposed to last until December 31, 2019. However, due to extraordinarily large and erratic movements of the north magnetic pole, an out-of-cycle update (WMM2015v2) was released in February 2019 (delayed by a few weeks due to the U.S. federal government shutdown) to accurately model the magnetic field above 55° north latitude until the end of 2019. The next regular update (WMM2020) will occur in late 2019.
WMM2015v2 Release
The full release of the out-of-cycle WMM (WMM2015v2) is now available. All WMM products and services have been updated. This new model addresses the degraded performance of WMM2015 in the Arctic region and supersedes it.

Erratic Behavior Of Earth's Magnetic Field
For reasons that still baffle scientists, however, the magnetic north pole is acting up. It has been increasingly moving away from Canada and toward Siberia at an erratic rate.
Ciaran Beggan, of the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, said it moves at about 30 miles per year.
"It didn't move much between 1900 and 1980 but it's really accelerated in the past 40 years," Beggan said.
Earth's magnetic field is generated by unpredictable changes in molten iron deep at the core of the planet. It is not yet clear what is behind the erratic changes in the magnetic field, but some scientists think it has something to do with high-speed jet of liquid iron underneath Canada.
"The location of the north magnetic pole appears to be governed by two large-scale patches of magnetic field, one beneath Canada and one beneath Siberia. The Siberian patch is winning the competition," University of Leeds geomagnetist Phil Livermore said at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Washington DC last month.

it's completely possible this WMM thing is a total scam by government workers for funding, another "global warming"
unfortunately there are so many science scams running it's hard to say
also - the data admits a wandering of 30 mi/yr, but before said it didn't wander much, then calls a single instance of a 55 mi wander "an unpredicted event" (but this much "error" in such an unweildy thing, can't be considered as "something new")

PERSONALLY I REFUSE TO DOWNLOAD AND LOOK. i can only be assured the "good data" is very expensive and not shared, that i'm being fed partial and baked data (so that i cannot discover anything government insiders have not already), and so they get web page hits that "citizens want and need" their iPHone software - which i don't - which people don't need
