The location of the magnetic north pole updated early due to its increasingly movementat a rate of 55 kilometers (34 miles) per year.

The location of the magnetic north pole is updated one year early due to its increasingly rapid movement toward Siberia from the Canadian Arctic at a rate of 55 kilometers (34 miles) per year.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Magnetic_Model

Updated model coefficients are released at 5-year intervals, with WMM2015 (released Dec 15, 2014) supposed to last until December 31, 2019. However, due to extraordinarily large and erratic movements of the north magnetic pole, an out-of-cycle update (WMM2015v2) was released in February 2019 (delayed by a few weeks due to the U.S. federal government shutdown) to accurately model the magnetic field above 55° north latitude until the end of 2019. The next regular update (WMM2020) will occur in late 2019.

WMM2015v2 Release

The full release of the out-of-cycle WMM (WMM2015v2) is now available. All WMM products and services have been updated. This new model addresses the degraded performance of WMM2015 in the Arctic region and supersedes it.

Erratic Behavior Of Earth's Magnetic Field

For reasons that still baffle scientists, however, the magnetic north pole is acting up. It has been increasingly moving away from Canada and toward Siberia at an erratic rate.

Ciaran Beggan, of the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh, said it moves at about 30 miles per year.

"It didn't move much between 1900 and 1980 but it's really accelerated in the past 40 years," Beggan said.

Earth's magnetic field is generated by unpredictable changes in molten iron deep at the core of the planet. It is not yet clear what is behind the erratic changes in the magnetic field, but some scientists think it has something to do with high-speed jet of liquid iron underneath Canada.

"The location of the north magnetic pole appears to be governed by two large-scale patches of magnetic field, one beneath Canada and one beneath Siberia. The Siberian patch is winning the competition," University of Leeds geomagnetist Phil Livermore said at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Washington DC last month.

it's completely possible this WMM thing is a total scam by government workers for funding, another "global warming"

unfortunately there are so many science scams running it's hard to say

also - the data admits a wandering of 30 mi/yr, but before said it didn't wander much, then calls a single instance of a 55 mi wander "an unpredicted event" (but this much "error" in such an unweildy thing, can't be considered as "something new")

PERSONALLY I REFUSE TO DOWNLOAD AND LOOK. i can only be assured the "good data" is very expensive and not shared, that i'm being fed partial and baked data (so that i cannot discover anything government insiders have not already), and so they get web page hits that "citizens want and need" their iPHone software - which i don't - which people don't need

(LOOKING AT A BUNCH OF LINES ON AN IPHONE, FROM AN INSTITUTE TRYING TO PROMOTE EMERGENCY FUNDING, is not what i consider a "good source")

offering "cooked lines" / "baked lines" is exactly what i'd expect from an obama appointed and run agency

the incredible this is no one has said with 100% certainty yet what causes planetary magnetic fields

we have so much high resolution data it should be telling us something loudly

what we are SURE OF IS: NOT A THING

there are MANY science world article repeating that the WMM data suggests a "more than usual move"

I caution it is ADVERTISING

i've see models before that are cooked to show fake view (such as global warming data)

it's entirely possible the whole new data set is fake (and or is the software "you must use" to "see it")

> there are MANY science world article repeating that the WMM data suggests a "more than usual move"

correction: i mean that the wikipedia article is confirmed as "sourced" as in "not a fake" but that doesn't mean the data and tools and agencies seeking funding are not faking

Magnetic shift is certainly real.

Earth's magnetic field is constantly changing, and while large-scale changes, such as a complete reversal of the magnetic field, happen over several thousand years, smaller changes over shorter periods affect navigation, including for aviation. This shifting magnetic field affects airports and airline operations and causes runway names to change.

https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/news/airport-runway-names-shift-magnetic-field

And there have been many reversals

As a matter of geological record, the Earth's magnetic field has undergone numerous reversals of polarity. We can see this in the magnetic patterns found in volcanic rocks, especially those recovered from the ocean floors. In the last 10 million years, there have been, on average, 4 or 5 reversals per million years. At other times in Earth's history, for example during the Cretaceous era, there have been much longer periods when no reversals occurred. Reversals are not predictable and are certainly not periodic in nature. Hence we can only speak about the average reversal interval.

magnetic pole shift has been well documented in geological history, it is now thought to happen at a faster pace than previously thought and the speed of the current shift is also increasing....

As stated above "Reversals are not predictable and are certainly not periodic in nature. "

um, ok....

https://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012-poleReversal.html

a summary:
"Reversals are the rule, not the exception. Earth has settled in the last 20 million years into a pattern of a pole reversal about every 200,000 to 300,000 years, although it has been more than twice that long since the last reversal. A reversal happens over hundreds or thousands of years, and it is not exactly a clean back flip. Magnetic fields morph and push and pull at one another, with multiple poles emerging at odd latitudes throughout the process. Scientists estimate reversals have happened at least hundreds of times over the past three billion years. And while reversals have happened more frequently in "recent" years, when dinosaurs walked Earth a reversal was more likely to happen only about every one million years."

Predictable that it will happen, silly, just not when

someone isn't using the term "periodically" correctly as it pertains to the geological record, and it's not NASA

What’s the concern? You boys don’t need a compass to find your way from the basement to the kitchen, do you?

yes they've been predicting time reversal as well

but i don't browse website names with "window10" in the name: guaranteed viruses
