You can touch elemental mercury. It's got such a high surface tension it's unlikely to pass through your skin. Ask anyone over 70 and they probably played with it as kids. Just remember to wash your hands afterward.

Organomercury compounds are a different story. Those go right through many types of protective gloves, and subsequent death is swift.

Just don't dip your cigarettes in it and smoke them. About 10 years ago there was a story in Time about some dumbfuck kids in backwoods Kentucky found a 5 gallon bucket of mercury, dipped cigarettes in it/smoked them, washed their hands in it, put it in their hair, etc...and then went home and contaminated a bunch of houses to the point they had to be torn down and rebuilt. Plus they got mercury poisoning...duh!!
