Snow Storm Mentality

So, I was unclogging a toilet, and I got to thinkin'.

In the build-up to the blizzard, it was chaos. Shelves were cleared of bread. 4WD tires were kicked. Beer was bought. Every conversation you had touched on the estimated accumulation at some point. Lamentations were made about the problems heavy snowfall causes. Prayers were made that it wouldn't be too bad.

But, stores were still open. Bars were still serving. Snow cocks were made. And everywhere you looked, someone had a camera. Those who braved the weather had snowball fights and laughed about how hard it was to walk as they slipped about.

I think on some level, we need these sort of things to happen. We bitch about it, but deep down, we can't wait. It gives us a chance to re-assert our ability to survive whatever nature throws at us. It brings out primal instincts we rarely use anymore. We're so excited to give nature the middle finger and say, "I've got enough bread and toilet paper to last for WEEKS. BRING IT."

Discuss.

Maybe in our centrally heated homes with indoor plumbing, internet, 13843 TV channels, computers, Xboxs the prospect of being inconvienced for 36 hours makes it seem like "survival", but in reality it's nothing. 100 years ago, this type of snow would be infinitely more deadly and survival mode was actually required.

I'm out of bread, popcorn, chips and beer, but big deal deal, I just eat other things.

Oh, of course. At worst, people can live without food for a couple days. But still, we run to the grocery store, gas up the blower, and hunker down like it's that storm from "The Day After Tomorrow."
