Late Breaking News!

Toyota owners should stop driving cars affected by recall, take them to dealers, says U.S. transportation secretary

Is it just me, or might someone else be wondering if the Feds are hyping this whole Toyota scare to the max? Late in December, our Sec of Transportation, Ray LaHood, had some of his folks fly to Tokyo to warmn the Toyota folks that they might put the 'stop sell' on the vast majority of their product line.

Now the same LaHood is admonishing current Toyota owners to park their cars on their dealer's lot. He is a dumb ass to be sure. This will be confirmed if you get a chance to see him interviewed 'bout this over the next day or so. But even this dumb ass would know that no dealer can accomodate all of his U.I.O's (units in operation) on his lot. E.G. Springfield Toyota typically delivers @ 3,000 new 'yotas a year, the vast majority of which are in the recall window. His U.I.O's would be @ 5 times annual sales. Think he can park 15,000 disgruntled customer's cars? He can't do 200 at any one time. So Mr. LaHood is effectively creating a crisis of confidence and a panic amongnst a good dealer and his normally rational FFX Co. customers.

I'm in the car biz....domestic dealer...no love loss or tears shed for my normally outrageously successful Toyota competitors. But I do have to wonder if this wrecking crew down on Pennsylvania Ave, the same crew that bit into the Chrysler and GM apples only to find half of a diseased worm, I wonder if they're creating another crisis that's 'too good to waste'.

What is the solution then?

Toyota servicemen are just now receiving parts and still need training to fix the issue.

Actually, most of the prone models were made in the USA...

Now theyre starting to make decent cars, but in the 90s, those favorite brands of yours made cars that literally resembled metal feces.

They still are cheap ugly pieces of shit.
Only difference is Honda made the Accord ugly
to compete with the American car manufacturers
here in America.

Err. Does Toyota even have a proper fix yet? Doesn't make much sense to show up at a dealership until they do.

All the hysteria is around that one Lexus crash (even though there have been more, less dramatic crashes). Have they even figured out what caused the Lexus crash? Yes, it's a stuck accelerator. But is it the problem that's been ID'd in the recall? Also, I still don't understand how the stuck accelerator would affect the ability to brake (including the emergency brake) or drop the transmission into neutral.

Turn ignition off, or Select PARK. That might stop you.

Yah, the guy that died was a California Highway Patrol officer. You would have though that he would have known what to do....But panic is a major contributor to situational paralysis.

From what I've heard, the car has a push button ignition. So, he may have pushed it monentarily off as opposed to the three second "hold".

I'd say 1) drop the car into neutral, 2) use the emergency brake, 3) hit the ignition, 4) put the fucker into park, or 5) a combination of 1-4. You'll fuck up your car, but then you can sue Toyota for the damage as opposed to your heirs suing over your dead, crispy corpse.

Well, the interesting thing is Toyota is turning its attention away from the accelerator mechanism and is instead looking at the computer system. If the brakes stopped working, that would make more sense. It may be fucking SkyNet at work.

The brake itself may have become irrelevant - antilock brakes give you a good foot massage if you slam them too hard.

Going into neutral is just what the good doctor ordered. I can't see how someone would have time to call 911 on their cell and wouldn't throw the thing into neutral.

Turning the key off will probably lock the wheel, which may be worse for some of the doofus drivers out there.

I was doing sadistic experiements on an old Mercury and put it into park when I was going around 40mph, I got nothing but a tick-tick-tick-tick-tick-tick of the parking gear grinding.

Toyota's recalls (thus far) don't cover the Lexus crash -

The floor mat recall includes Lexus products, but the Lexus crash car's mats were in the trunk; and

The pedal shim recall doesn't cover any Lexus products.

Personal opinion - I suspect the root cause is where Toyota really doesn't want it to be - the software.

That would seem to make sense. The mechanism went nuts and couldn't be turned off.

More American labor goes into Toyotas and Hondas these days then the Big Three products. A lot of GM engines are made in China and all three companies use labor in Mexico.

Re: Lexus crash

Toyota is claiming that no Lexus vehicles are involved in their recall. Also, the 911 guy had the right idea, but the guy didn't hear him. This could have likely been prevented by one simple phrase:

SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL!

I think if I were in that situation, the last thing I would do is call 911. Like how the hell are they going to help?

I agree. BTW, such incidents can be helped by having a manual car as well (Which is the case with two of our Nissans), because you can work the clutch.

Also, if you ever find yourself out of control due to the brakes not working, your first move should be to pump them. From there, if that fails, you always have the Emergency Brake to apply, and you can still downshift in an automatic, shift into Neutral if the situation calls for it, or, worst case, turn the car off (You might have to wrestle the wheel harder if you lose the assisted steering, but it can be done).
